'Mull of Kintyre' is an absolute classic - brilliant song, and a million-seller in the UK too. No way is 'Monkberry Moon Delight' better.
― Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Monday, 4 June 2018 16:50 (eight years ago)
pretty irritated that this beat the above Yoko tune, I must say. A worse song in every way imho.
fair exchange for “give peace a chance” even appearing. also i assume most ballots weren’t full of yoko songs
“mull of kintyre” is good
― flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Monday, 4 June 2018 16:51 (eight years ago)
comments claim Screamin' Jay said Paul had written the song with him in mind, which makes a lot of sense really
xp

“monkberry” is such a great song and also a solid lol every time i hear it
WELL I KNOW MY BANANA IS OLDER THAN THE REST!

So I sat in the attic, a piano up my nose, And the wind played a dreadful CANTATA.
(can-ta-ta)(can-ta-ta)
i like mull of kintyre, one of the rare occasions that i don't head for the hills when i hear bagpipes
― 808s & Deep States (voodoo chili), Monday, 4 June 2018 16:56 (eight years ago)
i really should've voted for "calico skies," dang

I've gotten so many pedantic remarks on my blog about Yoko: WELL SHE WASN'T A BEATLE YOU KNOW
― morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 4 June 2018 17:02 (eight years ago)
And Im like, "Well, yeah, she was. After she refused George Martin's invitation to join in 1962, she consoled herself with dating Paul a couple years, after which she joined on second wind."

The funny thing is that there's a Beatles songbook - with the chords to 'Power to the People' in it!
― Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Monday, 4 June 2018 17:13 (eight years ago)
I love how "One of These Nights" is a song that keeps trying to form itself into a song.
― morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 4 June 2018 17:14 (eight years ago)
of all the early POB singles "Instant Karma!" is the best imo, in that it has a readymade slogan & isn't grating to listen to.

Oh my god. "One of These Days" was my #2. So vividly conveys resigned melancholy, I love its simplicity in words & music, and little touches in the recording, like the slapback echo in the left channel and Paul tapping his acoustic guitar in between verses to keep time. At a loss for words now, but that song is very special to me, and one of his very very best.
― flappy bird, Monday, 4 June 2018 17:16 (eight years ago)
i was one of the votes for "greenfield", above. yoko's POB is a real trip. i have to say, though, that when i put my spotify ballot/playlist on shuffle mode it is JARRING when the the more experimental yoko tracks show up
― obviously DLC (Karl Malone), Monday, 4 June 2018 17:16 (eight years ago)
still one of the most incredible moments in American pop history when "Fame" topped the chart (twice!) – like, it has nothing to do with what else is happening, how did this happen

well George's harmonies and Ringo's drums ARE prominent
― morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 4 June 2018 17:24 (eight years ago)
fame and won't back down are obviously great songs but i'd much rather a couple more actual solo beatles tracks sneak into the 99th and 100th spots

I didn't like it when I first got it, probably around age fourteen or so, early '80s. I went back and listened to these albums in the late '90s (bought a number of them for cheap again at used record stores) after reading Barry Miles' McCartney book and having my perspective on McCartney changed. I realized how great I thought it was then, but I do wonder why I didn't have the same realization earlier.
I think it has to do with the production. There's something a bit ramshackle-Beatles-White-Album still going on. That works for McCartney's songs on the White Album, where you have variety and they're offset by everyone else's songs, but you have to do a deep dive to appreciate it for a whole album length.
― timellison, Tuesday, 24 March 2020 19:20 (six years ago)
Alfred, ever hear Thrillington? I always say that album reflects really favorably on how good Ram is compositionally.

No, but I should
