The riff on 'Atomic' by Blondie is near enough the same, too.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Monday, 28 May 2018 11:09 (eight years ago)

ah, I had never noticed : good one !

AlXTC from Paris, Monday, 28 May 2018 11:32 (eight years ago)

It's a cool riff. It makes the second chord an added sixth chord.

timellison, Monday, 28 May 2018 12:17 (eight years ago)

hehe

taking sides: Ringo's COOKIES!! on "Early 1970" vs. John's COOKIE on "Hold On"

niels, Monday, 28 May 2018 12:22 (eight years ago)

This is cool! Shakey had this on the George singles list. From a kids' TV show, 1992.

niels, Monday, 28 May 2018 21:05 (eight years ago)

loving the Nilsson cover of Subterranean Homesick Blues, but jfc could these guys lay off the saxophones occasionally?

Darin, Monday, 28 May 2018 21:13 (eight years ago)

Arrow Through Me surprisingly good

I saw a cat with a machine in his brain
The man who fed him said he didn't feel any pain
I'd like to see that man take out that machine
And stick it in his own brain
D'you know what I mean?

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Tuesday, 29 May 2018 15:44 (eight years ago)

i will not have time to get through ringo on an albums basis but i really like this list https://www.rollingstone.com/music/lists/meet-the-beatle-a-guide-to-ringo-starr-s-solo-career-in-20-songs-20150325/

flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Tuesday, 29 May 2018 15:57 (eight years ago)

Big boys bickering
And so the game goes on and on
Big boys bickering
Fuckin' it up for everyone

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Tuesday, 29 May 2018 16:02 (eight years ago)

I love "Photograph."

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 29 May 2018 16:31 (eight years ago)

it's a really wonderful song

flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Tuesday, 29 May 2018 16:33 (eight years ago)

"It Don't Come Easy" is great, too

808s & Deep States (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 29 May 2018 17:00 (eight years ago)

photograph is a decent song but Ringo doesn't really do anything for it imo

he'll feature as a drummer on my ballot, not as a singer

niels, Tuesday, 29 May 2018 17:07 (eight years ago)

i've never heard the second wilburys record before. "inside out" is awesome

flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Tuesday, 29 May 2018 17:29 (eight years ago)

Those classic Lynne ascending/descending chords

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 29 May 2018 17:29 (eight years ago)

Ringo sings "Photograph" like a normal person, which gives it its pathos. It's what I also love about Vanessa Williams' "Save The Best for Last."

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 29 May 2018 17:30 (eight years ago)

damn, jim keltner not only played on 100000000 post-beatles solo records, he's also the drummer on steely dan's "josie"?

flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Tuesday, 29 May 2018 17:40 (eight years ago)

lol i forgot that the wilburys songs were eligible for this poll

808s & Deep States (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 29 May 2018 17:50 (eight years ago)

I would remind everybody not to forget collabs like the Wilburys, David Bowie's "Fame", Nilsson's "Pussycats", the Fireman, etc. These are all eligible

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 29 May 2018 17:52 (eight years ago)

David Bowie's "Fame", Nilsson's "Pussycats"

i'm struggling with these two, to be honest. "Fame" is one of the best pop hits of all time, imo, but i can barely hear john in it. i can hear the trademarks of bowie all over it, but really i only notice lennon's presence in the lyrics? that might just be me. so i'm not sure whether to credit lennon with co-writing one of my favorite songs, or banish it to the lower stretches of the top 100. same kinda deal with "many rivers to cross" (although i think it leans a lot more on the mid-70s lennon sound than "fame")

obviously DLC (Karl Malone), Tuesday, 29 May 2018 18:00 (eight years ago)

Might be my ears, but I can hear Johns vocal all over it.

'WHASSANAME?'

Mark G, Tuesday, 29 May 2018 18:03 (eight years ago)

Lennon added one of the (many) interwoven guitar parts and, he says, the backwards piano.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 29 May 2018 18:04 (eight years ago)

yeah, there are certain parts where i notice his presence. but the thing is, i guess, that bowie can and did perform the song live, absolutely slaying it. whereas, i can't really imagine what a live lennon version of the song would sound like, without bowie.

obviously DLC (Karl Malone), Tuesday, 29 May 2018 18:06 (eight years ago)

yeah I totally hear John's guitar in "Fame", and his vocal delivery

with "Many Rivers to Cross" John actually re-used the string arrangement for one of his own songs iirc

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 29 May 2018 18:16 (eight years ago)

so just out of curiosity, where did they end up on your ballot, roughly speaking?

obviously DLC (Karl Malone), Tuesday, 29 May 2018 18:19 (eight years ago)

ith "Many Rivers to Cross" John actually re-used the string arrangement for one of his own songs iirc

poussé poussé

obviously DLC (Karl Malone), Tuesday, 29 May 2018 18:21 (eight years ago)

Ohhhhh

Now that confirms something I would never have guessed!

oh i really like this. lovely power pop

flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Tuesday, 29 May 2018 18:32 (eight years ago)

so just out of curiosity, where did they end up on your ballot, roughly speaking?

as the poll-runner, I am going to be "submitting" my ballot last

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 29 May 2018 18:37 (eight years ago)

(xposts) "Photograph" still my favourite solo-Beatle single.

finally made it to the fireman records. i'm sure this can be written off as competent ambient techno but i loooove it

flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Tuesday, 29 May 2018 19:20 (eight years ago)

kinda reminds me of the softer tracks on beaucoup fish

flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Tuesday, 29 May 2018 19:26 (eight years ago)

i guess an unspoken subtext of that second fireman record is that it's the first thing paul put out after linda died and her voice is all over it :(

"fluid" is extremely beautiful

flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Tuesday, 29 May 2018 19:53 (eight years ago)

^^^ this could also be online beatles fans misleading me bc i can find no external confirmation of it

flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Tuesday, 29 May 2018 19:54 (eight years ago)

I know there's a couple of things on Driving Rain that are about Linda - 'From a Lover to a Friend' being one, which is one of my favourites from that record. Run Devil Run, the rock'n'roll covers album, was his first post-Linda album under his own name.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Tuesday, 29 May 2018 20:02 (eight years ago)

I remember when Run Devil Run first came out that some perceived McCartney delving back into the rock'n'roll stuff that he loved when he was younger as being a form of therapy for him after Linda's death.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Tuesday, 29 May 2018 20:07 (eight years ago)

For sure I'm voting for RDR's "No Other Baby," one of the greatest vocals of his career and maybe the only time he's ever sounded anguished.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 29 May 2018 20:07 (eight years ago)

only a couple days before the deadline so get those ballots in folx

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 29 May 2018 21:26 (eight years ago)

i'm nearly done! i can only fit in like three more songs anyway lol

flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Tuesday, 29 May 2018 21:28 (eight years ago)

I'll quit dithering and put mine together tonight.

WilliamC, Tuesday, 29 May 2018 21:29 (eight years ago)

everyone pls vote for the fireman's "fluid" with me

flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Tuesday, 29 May 2018 21:32 (eight years ago)

would I vote for it?

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 29 May 2018 21:39 (eight years ago)

idk it's really pretty and 11 minutes long

flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Tuesday, 29 May 2018 21:40 (eight years ago)

lol clever dig

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 29 May 2018 21:44 (eight years ago)
