13 ctrl is my fav right now, this release keeps on giving though

during the last two minutes of "dummy casual pt 2" there is a vocal sample, and accompanying the vocal sample is a snippet of what i swear is the sound an iphone makes when you send / receive an sms. this sound: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9o9Prx-V9s0 has anyone else almost checked their phone while listening to this?

NTS pick 4 songs: l3 ctrl, e0, icari, column thirteen

These four alone would have made a pretty amazing single CD album.

octobeard, Tuesday, 22 May 2018 05:10 (eight years ago)

Some of these tracks are pretty similar to the 2014/15 live sessions, north spiral is one in particular.

lana del boy (ledge), Tuesday, 22 May 2018 12:51 (eight years ago)

"l3 ctrl" is good but seems like a bit of a retread relative to the rest of this. I was having drill-y flashbacks for the first half of it. Just didn't find it exceptional, I guess, but I plan to listen to it a thousand more times anyway

Paul Ponzi, Tuesday, 22 May 2018 13:16 (eight years ago)

l3 ctrl just has an frenetic uptempo energy to it I haven't heard from them since the LP5/EP7 days. Makes a really sweet opening track too.

The transitions of the four above are really spot on up until column thirteen. Might need to rethink that. Either way, one of the advantages of pumping out so many fairly high quality tunes is it makes for an intriguing exercise to create some easily digestible cross segments.

octobeard, Tuesday, 22 May 2018 21:41 (eight years ago)

i had a fairly uptempo selection from elseq i got attached to for running:

chimer 1-5-1
pendulu hv moda
latentcall
freulaeux

fLh - Ae covers NIN

startled macropod (MatthewK), Friday, 25 May 2018 07:03 (eight years ago)

Has Autechre ever remixed NIN? Aphex did of course. And Autechre remixed, er, Tortoise.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 25 May 2018 12:42 (eight years ago)

Skinny puppy maybe the closest they came. Not one of their greatest, although it's pretty out there.

lana del boy (ledge), Friday, 25 May 2018 13:22 (eight years ago)

So elseq 1 is the last release of theirs on spotify, just noticed (while wondering what to spend my gdpr sign up thankyou 20% discount on) that it's the last available on bleep as well. were elseq 2-5 and the nts sessions all self released?

lana del boy (ledge), Friday, 25 May 2018 15:32 (eight years ago)

hmmm, on the bleepstore i still see NTS sessions at the very top, available for pre-order and streaming: https://autechre.bleepstores.com/

obviously DLC (Karl Malone), Friday, 25 May 2018 15:36 (eight years ago)

unless bleep is separate from autechre.bleepstores.com? i've never ordered from them, i'm not sure

obviously DLC (Karl Malone), Friday, 25 May 2018 15:36 (eight years ago)

yeah i meant bleep not bleepstores, i don't know what their corporate governance structure is but that stuff isn't on bleep.

lana del boy (ledge), Friday, 25 May 2018 17:21 (eight years ago)

well i don't know what's going on with bleep.com since you can get all of elseq and nts on warp.net. but post nts, this elseq era interview is interesting re: the idea behind and their plans for autechre.bleepstores.com:

The elseq "buy" link on warp.net goes to the autechre shop

quaristice is super weird isn't it. i like it but it has a lot of outliers for them i think.

'acid mwan idle' is also pretty different for them in a similar way maybe. i don't know wtf is going on with it but i've kind of connected with it.

you bet, nancy (map), Wednesday, 30 May 2018 05:43 (eight years ago)

yeh, acid mwan idle is really distinct from anything else they've done - love it though

i have a hunch violvoic is based on IO from quaristice although i haven't bothered to find the parts that make me think that. anyone noticed any other bits that suggest the NTS tracks could be descendants (or at least relatives) of tracks from other releases?

cheeseburger, Wednesday, 30 May 2018 07:39 (eight years ago)

upthread:
- "all end" ... the bulk (the surface, at least) of it, is from the outro to "bladelores" (Exai)
- “violvoic” is obviously using a “voice” from Confield’s uviol when you listen to it
- "clustro casual" from nts 3 sounds a lot like "teartear"
- "four of seven" sounds lifted straight out of the Amber era too
- noticed the pads from "Altibzz" creeping in at the end of "debris_funk"

startled macropod (MatthewK), Wednesday, 30 May 2018 08:27 (eight years ago)

autechre will eat itself

koogs, Wednesday, 30 May 2018 09:01 (eight years ago)

also as noted upthread north spiral is straight outta the 2014/15 live sets.

lana del boy (ledge), Wednesday, 30 May 2018 11:36 (eight years ago)

tbf this is like taking a shot at Bach for using the same 'cello sounds in ALL of the 'cello concertos

startled macropod (MatthewK), Wednesday, 30 May 2018 12:53 (eight years ago)

yea Ae recycling stuff is pretty exciting, tbh

frogbs, Wednesday, 30 May 2018 13:22 (eight years ago)

carefree counter dronal sounds a looooot like some early parts of pendulu hv moda and maybe another track in the elseq set I'm forgetting.

Definitely seems like they're recycling instruments or "parts" to generate new tracks. While I do like this, I hope they change their palette up a bit for their next release. It's been fairly consistent and refined since Exai. One of my favorite things about their post Confield explorations in organized chaos and musical entropy has been the consistent changeup in sounds between albums.

octobeard, Wednesday, 30 May 2018 16:47 (eight years ago)

two weeks pass...

i don't see it as necessarily good or bad, just an interesting observation. it makes sense that they'd build on max patches over time (rather than constantly creating new ones from scratch) and I think the recent releases are snapshots of these patches at that point in time

cheeseburger, Wednesday, 13 June 2018 16:50 (seven years ago)

resident advisor just did an autechre piece (jo3 muggs) and i couldn't get more than two paragraphs into it, really cringey, like most of ra these days. made me appreciate the pitchfork nts review that much more, just for being thoughtful and coherent.

you bet, nancy (map), Wednesday, 13 June 2018 17:43 (seven years ago)

link to article?

Paul Ponzi, Wednesday, 13 June 2018 21:32 (seven years ago)

i'd still rather listen to tri repeate, untilted, oversteps than any of their recent work..controp maybe

Slippage (Ross), Wednesday, 13 June 2018 21:40 (seven years ago)

xpost they did a review a few weeks ago, but it wasn't by jo3 muggs: https://www.residentadvisor.net/reviews/22429

the last jo3 muggs thing with autechre at RA was this, but it was a couple years ago: https://www.residentadvisor.net/features/2756

btw i don't know who jo3 muggs is

obviously DLC (Karl Malone), Wednesday, 13 June 2018 23:05 (seven years ago)

he reviews the electronic music in The Wire.

Heavy Messages (jed_), Thursday, 14 June 2018 00:00 (seven years ago)

oops i didn't look at the date on that piece, fucking facebook

you bet, nancy (map), Thursday, 14 June 2018 00:00 (seven years ago)

If it's still called critical beats then that column.

Heavy Messages (jed_), Thursday, 14 June 2018 00:00 (seven years ago)

look i don't mean to diss jo3 muggs i just clicked on a linky link to a year-old article and didn't likey like lol sorry

you bet, nancy (map), Thursday, 14 June 2018 00:03 (seven years ago)

I don't think it's been called Critical Beats in years

Paul Ponzi, Thursday, 14 June 2018 00:07 (seven years ago)

I haven't bought it for a long time.

Heavy Messages (jed_), Thursday, 14 June 2018 00:09 (seven years ago)

i remember "Critical Beats". as a name it sounded like dj spooky was mad and wanted to hit someone with an "assemblage"

you bet, nancy (map), Thursday, 14 June 2018 00:16 (seven years ago)

I actually thought the RA review of NTS Sessions was pretty good. The enthusiasm convinced me to check it out.

MikoMcha, Thursday, 14 June 2018 05:34 (seven years ago)

Haha yeah great mag, but I always hated the section titles in Wire. Especially 'Critical Beats'- isn't that track 3 off the first Chemical Brothers album? Jo3 Mu9gs is a good writer on the whole. Don't know about the RA article though

Again: they haven't had those section titles in years

Paul Ponzi, Thursday, 14 June 2018 13:13 (seven years ago)

jo3's piece on elseq seemed pretty good to me. they're hard to write about, noz nailed the current stuff in a way i've never seen before

flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Thursday, 14 June 2018 13:21 (seven years ago)

So this was pretty great - far more abstract than their previous live sets I thought.

i'd have found that a tough listen i think, would have fallen on my knees in gratitude when the beat came in at 44:00. the guy recording seemed to enjoy it though, maybe the sheer weight of noise in the live setting would make a difference. 33:20 ftw either way.

lana del boy (ledge), Monday, 25 June 2018 13:16 (seven years ago)

!!! thank u Matthew <3<3<3

Uhura Mazda (lukas), Monday, 25 June 2018 20:55 (seven years ago)

It was a pretty challenging listen in that context, especially since it was a festival crowd and probably only 30% of people would have been up to date on where they're at these days. But I liked the fact that they tried something more interesting than 4/4 banger approach. Much as I love it when they do that.
Same person (not me!) recorded the Melbourne show the night before, and it's obvious they have a lot of control and flexibility when they perform these days.
