Word prefecture!

If I was asked to describe this album to a layman I would say it sounds like a whole album of five years covers with the Benny n the jets backing band. Easy listening injected with some fire

I've always sort of ignored these guys but I bought this yesterday and really enjoy it. It is legitimately weird.

Something great about records where someone picks up a new instrument and approaches it with vigour. See also white chalk and you are free

And of course Sting's "The Dream of the Blue Turtles." Such vigor.

that makes me curious. i have totally ignored them. the main obstacle has always been the name which turned me off completely.

Same. Tried to avoid (stupid name, lol-england lads etc, feared an even worse than Kaiser Chiefs rip-off) but I have to admit the Bowie references are making me slightly curious. If someone throws in a 'not unlike late 60s Scott Walker'-ref I will have to bite the bullet.

Took my car to the garage today. The loan car didn't have a CD player (and I wasn't organised enough to have taken an MP3 player). Ended up flicking through various radio channels including Radio 6. There were Arctic Monkeys songs played on the journey to and from work. Anyway, I was kind of reminded of Robbie Williams in his "trying to be clever" mode.

maybe that applies more to the last last shadow puppets record with the thickening strings. can still hear him in tranquility base though xp

I’m so old I remember wearing a yes to everything pin when the debut came out (music store employee 4 years)

I'm getting some Gainsbourg soundtrack (his work with Colombier, Vannier) vibes. Not as great as those, but very nice vibes they are. I'm also not familiar with their previous albums, apart from a single now and then. Record store owner made me listen to the debut last weekend, which I found quite wearing to listen to tbh. Much prefer the new album.

willem, Thursday, 24 May 2018 12:10 (six years ago) link

The 2 big influences were Gainsbourg's Melody Nelson and Dion's Born To Be With You.

piscesx, Thursday, 24 May 2018 15:16 (six years ago) link

On my third listen to this album now. Before I heard this album, Humbug was my favourite album of theirs, and now that I've heard this album it still is. This album isn't too far behind at the moment, though! When I first put it on, I was a bit thrown, but by the time 'American Sports' kicked in I was pretty much sold. It's something quite different for them and I really hope it pisses off the fans who wrongly think they never bettered their first album.

afaict it really has

flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Monday, 28 May 2018 22:37 (six years ago) link

from the RS article regarding cover art:

"I was going to the art supply store quite often".

"I became consumed by that. Getting up in the middle of the night and delving in. I kept calling it the lobby model, like the idea that sometimes those things sit in the lobbies of the buildings they represent - like in The Shining, with the miniature hedge maze in the lobby, and he's looking in there and then he sees the people are in there".

California scheming (Ross), Monday, 28 May 2018 22:44 (six years ago) link

'Batphone' is pretty much the only track that I find to be not as good as the others. At the moment, anyway. They're maturing really nicely as a band though, and they eventually won me over which is quite something given that 12 years ago I thought they were fucking awful.

(x-post to Brad)

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Monday, 28 May 2018 22:47 (six years ago) link

batphone is a little weird but the prior track references bruce wayne manor, so points for consistency??

California scheming (Ross), Monday, 28 May 2018 22:49 (six years ago) link

the guitars sound a lot like portishead on this, frazzled and mono

Yes, that's what's really important. Maybe put it as a sticker on the cover?

idk what you're not hearing here alfred

i revisited favourite worst nightmare the other day and it's great, those opening two tracks are furious, but it gets kinda loose on the second side!

Ross, Wednesday, 30 May 2018 22:20 (six years ago) link

every time i listen i latch onto a different lyric, bass lick, drum fill

flopson, Wednesday, 30 May 2018 22:34 (six years ago) link

Lyrics are so self effacing and funny it’s easy to love

Ross, Wednesday, 30 May 2018 22:37 (six years ago) link

I like half the album! But I can't get past the mismatch of ambition and prowess. He can't sing these songs, crams too many words, and sounds awful doing so.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 30 May 2018 22:45 (six years ago) link

after a few listens the words relaxed really nicely into the knotting song structures. i have zero problems with his singing here

flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Wednesday, 30 May 2018 22:52 (six years ago) link

I actually totally get what Alfred’s saying

:-/.

There’s definitely a lot of space filling with esoteric lyrics. I noticed this the other night when my buddy was over. It’s not really
Background music and commands everything

The rolling stone issue in which the band was recently featured gave the album 2 stars.

Review:

“The Arctic Monkeys have come a long way since the stun-gun punk of their 2006 hit “I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor”. A really long way. Their first LP in five years is a lounge-rock odyssey set in a casino piano bar on the moon. Frontman Alex Turner lands somewhere between glum-glam Bowie and Dean Martin on tracks like “Star Treatment” where he croons, “I’m a big name in deep space, ask your mates/But golden boy’s in bad shape.”
It’s not without a certain vermouth-zonked charm. But after a while in Turner’s wee small hours, you may want to hop the next shuttle back to Earth.
