surprised it got this high! as much as I love Jóga and Bachelorette I think this is my favorite song from Homogenic

Dan S, Friday, 11 May 2018 20:59 (six years ago) link

Like "Who Is It," this one was even higher for roughly the first third of ballots received. Actually held the #1 spot for a spell.

Didn’t know, but delighted to discover, that this song was so beloved.

yeah same here

No shade to the late balloters, but it broke my heart a little each time a new one came in without "Unravel" on it. So I had to make new love.

nourish nourish your turtleheart (Eric H.), Friday, 11 May 2018 21:00 (six years ago) link

Ooooh, I woke just in time for my #1. Too low, etc, etc.

Maximum big surprise! (Nag! Nag! Nag!), Friday, 11 May 2018 21:05 (six years ago) link

I have no idea how I forgot to put "Unravel" on my ballot.

!Alicia!, Friday, 11 May 2018 21:10 (six years ago) link

I love "Unravel" so much, few if any songs in her discography are such a comprehensive display of the awesome power of her voice.

Tim F, Friday, 11 May 2018 21:12 (six years ago) link

wait what?? "Unravel"??????

the masseduction of lauryn hill (Stevie D(eux)), Friday, 11 May 2018 21:13 (six years ago) link

The song is a hymn, pure and simple.

nourish nourish your turtleheart (Eric H.), Friday, 11 May 2018 21:14 (six years ago) link

I imagine Lars Von Trier, post-Breaking the Waves, listening to it and saying, "That's my next Golden Heart."

My #1 until the final reshuffle

My #1, I know some folks don't love it like I do but that song has been a constant in my life for like 20 years, so important to me so many times for over half of my life. (my #2 is similar and prob up soon)

Unravel is my number 1

i do love this song

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Friday, 11 May 2018 21:24 (six years ago) link

I adore all of these songs, except Venus, which I do like quite a bit but has never really attained god-like status for me like so many other of her songs have.

03. Pagan Poetry (Vespertine, 2001) -- 1,171 points; 28 votes; 3 first-place votes

nourish nourish your turtleheart (Eric H.), Friday, 11 May 2018 21:29 (six years ago) link

such great lyrics in this about the mystery of attraction, how the self is unknowable

Dan S, Friday, 11 May 2018 21:30 (six years ago) link

and about the beauty and terror of falling in love and of losing one's self

Dan S, Friday, 11 May 2018 21:30 (six years ago) link

I think the song construction is amazing too. the chorus is foreshadowed with the 'a secret code carved' lines, and then when it finally hits at about the halfway mark it's a huge rush. from there it just keeps ramping up

Dan S, Friday, 11 May 2018 21:33 (six years ago) link

...and this is what replaced it #1

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Friday, 11 May 2018 21:34 (six years ago) link

Pagan poetry was an easy decision for my top 5

808s & Deep States (voodoo chili), Friday, 11 May 2018 21:37 (six years ago) link

I love Venus as a Boy so much, insane levels of charm

808s & Deep States (voodoo chili), Friday, 11 May 2018 21:37 (six years ago) link

"Pagan Poetry" almost my number one, though I could see how its extreme emotional manipulativeness could be off-putting for some.

Tim F, Friday, 11 May 2018 21:40 (six years ago) link

xxxxp: "Unravel" actually got me back on the wagon. Somehow I was distracted when Post and Homogenic were released, though she seemed to be everywhere anyway, so imagined I was mainly missing a few deep cuts. I finally caught up with Homogenic at least a year late and I got stuck at track three, the first unfamiliar track. It was a very "O M G, why didn't someone tell me?" moment. I was fully attentive and appreciative again in time for Vespertine, not least #3 here.

Maximum big surprise! (Nag! Nag! Nag!), Friday, 11 May 2018 21:43 (six years ago) link

As I relistened to the discography, Pagan Poetry shifted its way up from "a Bjork track I quite like" to one of my favourite pieces of music by anyone. It's been in my head for at least two weeks now with no sign of relenting. It's just such a pure expression of desire.

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Friday, 11 May 2018 21:48 (six years ago) link

^yes, the same thing for me!

Dan S, Friday, 11 May 2018 21:51 (six years ago) link

So glad "Aeroplane" is top 2. You did well, ILM. :)

Maximum big surprise! (Nag! Nag! Nag!), Friday, 11 May 2018 21:54 (six years ago) link

xp also the lyrics that pop up in google are wrong I think, it's not "hurt myself again" but "hand myself over"

Dan S, Friday, 11 May 2018 21:58 (six years ago) link

I guess we know what's going to be #1

Dan S, Friday, 11 May 2018 22:00 (six years ago) link

i just hope the picture has a sad cat somewhere

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Friday, 11 May 2018 22:01 (six years ago) link

I know what the top two are, but I honestly have no idea which song will actually win.

!Alicia!, Friday, 11 May 2018 22:04 (six years ago) link

Can anyone tell me what that cascading sound in Unravel was reused in? I think in a tv programme as part of a segue? It's driving me crazy, and tbh this is probably why I didn't vote for it in the end, it is lovely and I should have voted for it.

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Friday, 11 May 2018 22:08 (six years ago) link

The top ten, and especially the top five, feels very coherent (if not uniform) - I think if you played these songs in a row to someone with only a broad notion of Bjork's work and said "this is her best work" they would be surprised at the consistency of tropes and motifs and the relative lack of wild eclecticism.

(of course this is assuming that 2 and 1 are J and H respectively)

I'm very happy with the results. Few songs can rival "Hyperballad". It's timeless and totally deserves the top spot.

Thanks Eric H for running this poll, it was brilliant to have two weeks of Bjork, the rollout was fantastic and the pictures were just superb, and some more superlatives too if I can think of any, thanks!
