I don't know if there's 16 songs in whole of recorded history that are better!

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Friday, 11 May 2018 14:48 (eight years ago)

otm

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Friday, 11 May 2018 14:48 (eight years ago)

no number ones tho

808s & Deep States (voodoo chili), Friday, 11 May 2018 14:48 (eight years ago)

OK just checked my ballot, I put this far too low down (have been listening to the Post Live disc today and the version on there is great).

Gavin, Leeds, Friday, 11 May 2018 14:49 (eight years ago)

I like the space and freedom she gives herself in this one, there's still something a little jazzy and retro. One of these delightfully slow and tranquil songs, almost decadent but it's not this. Lyrics brilliant again, and what a great title for a love declaration. I haven't listened to it nearly enough.

Nabozo, Friday, 11 May 2018 14:56 (eight years ago)

Does ILX know how wrong it is to put Possibly Maybe outside of the top ten? Probably not.

obviously DLC (Karl Malone), Friday, 11 May 2018 15:04 (eight years ago)

i put it as my #11

808s & Deep States (voodoo chili), Friday, 11 May 2018 15:08 (eight years ago)

björk has a lot of really good songs

808s & Deep States (voodoo chili), Friday, 11 May 2018 15:08 (eight years ago)

tooo looow

the Painbody Backpack (sciatica), Friday, 11 May 2018 15:09 (eight years ago)

jeepers i don't think we're getting anything that isn't on the first 4 albums anymore!

challops trap house (Will M.), Friday, 11 May 2018 15:25 (eight years ago)

(ok maybe 1 or 2, maybe my estimate was wild)

(but seriously is Who Is It gonna get robbed a spot here you monsters)

challops trap house (Will M.), Friday, 11 May 2018 15:27 (eight years ago)

I'm willing to bet that everything else that will place is better than Possibly Maybe (and I liked PM a lot).

Matt DC, Friday, 11 May 2018 15:30 (eight years ago)

i wouldn't mind

my life in 17 words

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 11 May 2018 15:31 (eight years ago)

had no idea possibly maybe was so rated. I heard mutual slump first and somehow that makes it a faintly unsatisfying listen. it's not up to you was my #1, never particularly stood out to me until it caught me on just the right day and now it just seems perfect to me

nourish nourish your turtleheart (Eric H.), Friday, 11 May 2018 15:53 (eight years ago)

#16?!

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 11 May 2018 15:53 (eight years ago)

yeah this is way too low

my #3

808s & Deep States (voodoo chili), Friday, 11 May 2018 16:01 (eight years ago)

Bjork thinks so too. That's why she's punching away the 16, you see.

nourish nourish your turtleheart (Eric H.), Friday, 11 May 2018 16:02 (eight years ago)

weird i was expecting this to hit the top five

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Friday, 11 May 2018 16:03 (eight years ago)

proud of "isobel" and "unravel" for getting this far

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Friday, 11 May 2018 16:05 (eight years ago)

had no idea possibly maybe was so rated. I heard mutual slump first and somehow that makes it a faintly unsatisfying listen.

i think i also heard mutual slump first, but i had the opposite reaction when i heard where the sample came from. the only bit of shadow's song that i really liked was the sample, so it was amazing to hear how that sustained organ line hanging over silence was just one component of bjork's composition, and how different of a place that she took it to

obviously DLC (Karl Malone), Friday, 11 May 2018 16:06 (eight years ago)

missed Unison placing above, too! Made my top 10

obviously DLC (Karl Malone), Friday, 11 May 2018 16:06 (eight years ago)

i probably should've ranked army of me higher for how much i used to love it but i really ruined myself on it at some point.

challops trap house (Will M.), Friday, 11 May 2018 16:07 (eight years ago)

When "Army of Me" dropped I thought, damn someone's figured out what to do w/the Zep drum sample again. It was the single that made me a full-on convert.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 11 May 2018 16:08 (eight years ago)

it's that damn synth bass

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 11 May 2018 16:08 (eight years ago)

Three words: slide guitar drop

nourish nourish your turtleheart (Eric H.), Friday, 11 May 2018 16:09 (eight years ago)

otm about the bass

808s & Deep States (voodoo chili), Friday, 11 May 2018 16:10 (eight years ago)

And if you complain OOOOOOONCE more

808s & Deep States (voodoo chili), Friday, 11 May 2018 16:10 (eight years ago)

"Army of Me is so much about me actually learning that I have to defend myself. I have to stand up and fight the fucking gorilla. Once I’ve got the diamond and I run away with it, it becomes massive ‘cos it’s mine. But if the gorilla had kept it, it would have gone really tiny. That’s surrealism for me.”

Dan S, Friday, 11 May 2018 16:16 (eight years ago)

I love Army of Me but is it just me or does it sound like a demo? It’s mostly the chorus which bothers me how it sounds... the verses sound more overpowered and the chorus sounds somewhat unfinished. I wish I knew more about music production to verbalize what I’m hearing.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 11 May 2018 16:17 (eight years ago)

To me, that it sounds like a demo is the best thing about it. See also: "Enjoy"

15. Cocoon (Vespertine, 2001) -- 835.5 points; 21 votes; 4 first-place votes

nourish nourish your turtleheart (Eric H.), Friday, 11 May 2018 16:18 (eight years ago)

whooooooooo

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Friday, 11 May 2018 16:22 (eight years ago)

that "cocoon" image is particularly impressive eric

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Friday, 11 May 2018 16:24 (eight years ago)

lmao I am stunned "Army of Me" isn't in the top 5, like it's not even in my top 10 but I thought it was very canonical????

the masseduction of lauryn hill (Stevie D(eux)), Friday, 11 May 2018 16:27 (eight years ago)

i guess we all had other bjork songs we were more excited about

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Friday, 11 May 2018 16:28 (eight years ago)

four first place votes for "cocoon" is wild

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Friday, 11 May 2018 16:28 (eight years ago)

I feel Army of Me placed perfectly. Not too low (or high) at all. Great single but far from her best.

octobeard, Friday, 11 May 2018 16:30 (eight years ago)

yeah i was not expecting myself to fall so hard for the song during the nominations process, but cocoon is a masterpiece of sustained mood and the thesis statement for vespertine's portrait of domestic bliss

i couldn't pick anything else at numbero ne. who would have known?

808s & Deep States (voodoo chili), Friday, 11 May 2018 16:31 (eight years ago)

i've completely given up on "who is it." though if it doesn't appear at all then i'm v surprised "where is the line" beat it

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Friday, 11 May 2018 16:32 (eight years ago)

to a boyyy

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Friday, 11 May 2018 16:32 (eight years ago)

When "Army of Me" dropped I thought, damn someone's figured out what to do w/the Zep drum sample again. It was the single that made me a full-on convert.

Had opposite reaction. "ugh ANOTHER use of this drum sample??" Expected more uniqueness from Bjork. Don't hate the song but not really a fan.

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Friday, 11 May 2018 16:33 (eight years ago)

i never even really noticed the use of the sample for whatever reason, i think the Bjorkness overwhelmed the Zeppelintude.

omar little, Friday, 11 May 2018 16:38 (eight years ago)

Vespertine heavy hitters coming a little too low in my opinion. I don't think she's had a better run of songs than Hidden Place to Aurora.

Van Horn Street, Friday, 11 May 2018 16:39 (eight years ago)

no way Who Is It doesn't make it - what else is there that's more likely to take its place?

It's Not Up To You and Unison were both in my top 10, both have really beautiful builds

idk but i didn't expect it to beat "cocoon." can't wait to be delighted xp

or "human behavior" for that matter

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Friday, 11 May 2018 16:48 (eight years ago)

Fuck, that's the wrong number again. Standby, I can't abide this.
