you are NOT going to get me to hear this

imago, Friday, 11 May 2018 13:04 (eight years ago)

oh wow it was all worth it for "four out of five"

― flamenco drop (BradNelson),

yes, this is the highlight (those harmonies).

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 11 May 2018 13:05 (eight years ago)

apparently everyone hates "batphone" but it sounds like the rest of the record

and it's good

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Friday, 11 May 2018 13:13 (eight years ago)

This is their Black Celebration.

piscesx, Friday, 11 May 2018 13:22 (eight years ago)

At this point the Arctic Monkeys are rapidly overtaking Lana Del Rey as the people who should obviously be working on the next James Bond theme

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Friday, 11 May 2018 13:25 (eight years ago)

Yeah you can just imagine it can't you? I mean they let Radiohead have a crack..

piscesx, Friday, 11 May 2018 13:29 (eight years ago)

I don't particularly care about them but man "Four out of Five" is indeed a jam

Simon H., Friday, 11 May 2018 13:31 (eight years ago)

This is their Black Celebration.

― piscesx, Friday, May 11, 2018 9:22 AM

There's one track that begins with a synth preset right out of mid '80s Depeche Mode.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 11 May 2018 13:31 (eight years ago)

ah it's "Batphone."

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 11 May 2018 13:32 (eight years ago)

this record brings up a lot of weird comparison points for me. like i feel like jellyfish might've made this record had they traded in paisley overalls and wide-eyed awe for impenetrably dark sunglasses and ennui

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Friday, 11 May 2018 13:38 (eight years ago)

Turner's always traded on ennui, though, right? This time he's shooting for the rotter vibe of This is Hardcore, and I'm still wondering if he's cramming too many words onto rickety melody lines.

I realized yesterday that I had a terrible download. The stream sounds much better.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 11 May 2018 13:42 (eight years ago)

oh yeah totally it just feels even more locked into that ennui than even their previous records. this is hardcore came to mind too

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Friday, 11 May 2018 13:46 (eight years ago)

bowie/queen glam/prog axis of worship but sitting poolside and dissociative

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Friday, 11 May 2018 13:55 (eight years ago)

poolside did you say

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 11 May 2018 13:57 (eight years ago)

damn I really like this, the fact that UK fans hate it is just icing

Simon H., Friday, 11 May 2018 13:58 (eight years ago)

I dig this so far! seems like it would be good to get lifted to

I think not being super invested in the Arctic Monkeys helps

The Desus & Mero Chain (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 11 May 2018 14:05 (eight years ago)

I've yet to hear this, but if people are hating it because it sounds like Humbug or because it isn't their (incredibly overrated) debut then I may like it.

the fact that UK fans hate it is just icing

Explain.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Friday, 11 May 2018 14:12 (eight years ago)

oh I just love the idea of Mojo-reading lads being like "hell yeah time to rock" then listening to...this

Simon H., Friday, 11 May 2018 14:13 (eight years ago)

I'm not excessively fond of the debut or "I Bet You Look Good..." either; the second album impressed me, though, and "Fluorescent Adolescent" remains their best fast single imo.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 11 May 2018 14:14 (eight years ago)

this doesn’t sound like any of their previous records

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Friday, 11 May 2018 14:32 (eight years ago)

there’s also a pretty audible r&b element in the first two tracks, makes me think turner’s been listening to a lot of al green

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Friday, 11 May 2018 14:33 (eight years ago)

Re 'MOJO reading lads' Mojo had the first interview before the album came out and the band did a playlist of influences for 'em (Dion, Nino Rota, David Axelrod, Gainsbourg..) so anyone reading Mojo knew before anyone else that the record wasn't a rock album. It's more for 30 and 40-something types Mojo. Lads are more 'LadBible' these days.

piscesx, Friday, 11 May 2018 15:01 (eight years ago)

I feel like people like to use Mojo as a strawman more than anything, this is a total record collector Mojo album

The Desus & Mero Chain (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 11 May 2018 15:02 (eight years ago)

I confess I have no idea what the lads read these days and I don't think I've read a mojo article in at least half a decade, just didn't want to use NME since they went under or something

Simon H., Friday, 11 May 2018 15:04 (eight years ago)

I don't think "lads" have ever read Mojo. Mojo is more geared towards a Steve Hoffman Forum type of audience.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Friday, 11 May 2018 15:09 (eight years ago)

What the hell is this?

Bee OK, Friday, 11 May 2018 15:14 (eight years ago)

180 degree change. I think I like it

Bee OK, Friday, 11 May 2018 15:14 (eight years ago)

bee ok otm

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Friday, 11 May 2018 15:18 (eight years ago)

I haven't listened to this yet, but I long assumed that it was going to sound like a Last Shadow Puppets album. Am I wrong in this assumption?

MarkoP, Friday, 11 May 2018 15:18 (eight years ago)

that is wrong, I think? (never heard the second one)

Simon H., Friday, 11 May 2018 15:21 (eight years ago)

it feels pretty linked to "everything you've come to expect" from the second one

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Friday, 11 May 2018 15:24 (eight years ago)

Haven't heard it yet but remember them throwing 'Lounge' around a lot during the Suck it and See press, into the idea of their biggest record just being an anomaly.

Also Simon's right, as immature as it is, pissing off the nme/britrock/catfish and the bottlemen crowd will always endear me.

devvvine, Friday, 11 May 2018 15:26 (eight years ago)

Yeah, I was thinking more about the second album, than their first.

MarkoP, Friday, 11 May 2018 15:27 (eight years ago)

Xp yeah very much Brad. Also i feel that the mumbling-along-with-a-synth (a Moog?) bit of '505' as far back as album 2 is similar.

piscesx, Friday, 11 May 2018 15:35 (eight years ago)

i LOVE the title track

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Friday, 11 May 2018 15:51 (eight years ago)

Yeah that, Four Out Of Five and Star Treatment would BE the ones i'd save from a fire.

piscesx, Friday, 11 May 2018 16:04 (eight years ago)

ffs I'm listening to this now

imago, Friday, 11 May 2018 17:15 (eight years ago)

:D

actually i have no idea how you'll feel about it

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Friday, 11 May 2018 17:18 (eight years ago)

im curious too!

well bissogled trotters (Michael B), Friday, 11 May 2018 17:18 (eight years ago)

i'd save them all
but i'm no hero

The Desus & Mero Chain (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 11 May 2018 17:27 (eight years ago)

this is odd and not too bad, doesn't sound like AM at all

imago, Friday, 11 May 2018 17:40 (eight years ago)

not really for me but fine tbh!

imago, Friday, 11 May 2018 17:51 (eight years ago)

one for the sticker

The Desus & Mero Chain (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 11 May 2018 18:07 (eight years ago)

Was able to finally finish this up. Not what I'm sure anymore was explaining from Arctic Monkeys. I'm sure fans are going to hate it. I think Brad said it was a lounge record and that it is. Not sure what to think really but don't see myself playing this a lot this year as it's not my style.

Bee OK, Friday, 11 May 2018 20:31 (eight years ago)

Good for them though to try something completely different

Bee OK, Friday, 11 May 2018 20:32 (eight years ago)

Isn't the lounge singer thing intentional though, as in it's part of the concept of the record? Or so I read.

Anyway I listened to the four tracks that seem to be getting the most love/attention on this thread and liked them. Not sure I need to hear the rest but yeah, good on yer, Alex.

Jeff W, Friday, 11 May 2018 21:22 (eight years ago)

He's impressed me almost every step of the way. I remember when the first album came out and there was all this Brit-pop hype, with him the next Ray Davies. I was doubtful, but ... the album was good. Then I saw them live behind that record and they were great. Then I totally tuned out except for whatever I heard on the radio, and what I did hear ... was pretty good, too! And this one is really good as well, very Pulp/Richard Hawley/David Bowie, which is nothing I ever would have expected from him.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 11 May 2018 21:51 (eight years ago)

I haven't heard the album but "4 out of 5 stars" is really good. Lounge lizard Bowie vibes.

well bissogled trotters (Michael B), Friday, 11 May 2018 22:31 (eight years ago)

"She Looks Life Fun" is brilliant IMO. 70s glam through a 'White Album' lens.

Milton, Saturday, 12 May 2018 15:33 (eight years ago)

hm i'm starting to think every song on this is amazing
