"The DJ eases a spliff from his lyrical lips" yeah - right at the start.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Dr. Bill, you made me cower in fear but then I remembered that most of the songs you named weren't nominated.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:29 (twenty-one years ago)

"but Saint Etienne and Pulp were probably the best singles bands of the 90's"

Bullshit.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Dr Perry?

DAFT PUNK - "Da Funk" (495 points, 27 votes)

http://www.thefirstcut.net/dafdaf.jpg
http://perso.wanadoo.fr/benjamingouzien/images/clips/daftpunkdafunk.jpg

"The best thing is, oddly, that 'Da Funk' is one of those tracks that sounds incredible no matter what speed you play it at. Speed it up a little, and it's amazing. Slow it down, it *still* sounds great..."
-- Paul Strange

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:30 (twenty-one years ago)

bullshit

i'd actually tend to agree, maybe adding in the Pet Shop Boys to that list

rentboy (rentboy), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:32 (twenty-one years ago)

All I can think of when looking at this list unfold is jed's disdainful face.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Well I was wrong about everything else, but at least I was right about "Da Funk" and "Enjoy the Silence".

As for Saint Etienne, I'd say "Like a Motorway" and "Nothing Can Stop Us" were both deserving, but "He's on the Phone" really isn't so great.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Most of the best Pet Shop Boys are '80s, I think. I'd certainly have Pulp as my favourite singles band, or just band, of the '90s, but Saint Etienne would be a fair way down my list.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:35 (twenty-one years ago)

'Where Ther Streets Have No Name', 'Being Boring', 'Can You Forgive Her?', 'Se A Vida E', 'Go West'. I dunno. 80s vs. 90s PSB singles is a tough one for me. Agree about Pulp and St. Etienne.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I was sure Da Funk would be top ten, especially after so many people were creaming themselves over the far inferior Digital Love in the other poll.

THE CARDIGANS - "Lovefool" (500 pts, 31 votes, 3 first place)

http://www.swr3.de/__pix/cover/500x435/3685.jpg

" "Lovefool" is perfect on so many levels."
-- nickalicious

"I never realized that Coolio was lamenting the lack of "Lovefool" in his life."
-- roxymuzak (in response to "Gangsta's Paradise" lyrics)

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Even taking the vote splitting into account, I'm really surprised that "He's on the Phone" handily beat out every other Saint Etienne single. I would have put my money on "Like a Motorway" or "Avenue" finishing highest out of the bunch.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:38 (twenty-one years ago)

"LOVEFOOL"!!!!!!!

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:39 (twenty-one years ago)

So "Lovefool" made it. That's pretty cool, I guess, though I don't think it's anywhere near #22. Nice little song.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:39 (twenty-one years ago)

: D

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Is 'Lovefool' the one that goes 'you will never know, cause I will never show'. I get confused. Don't understand why anyone would think they were that great, anyway.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Good to see it come up - a little too low. I had it at 17.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:40 (twenty-one years ago)

LOVE ME LOVE ME
SAY THAT YOU LOVE ME
MOTHERFUCKER

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yeah, that one. I think I must have heard the radio edit though.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Wait that's that SONG?!?!? WTF people?!?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:41 (twenty-one years ago)

That's "Carnival," "Lovefool" goes "love me, love me, say that you love me, fool me, fool me, go on and fool me" has a vid with the band as a message in a bottle and was in Baz Luhrman's Romeo & Juliet.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:42 (twenty-one years ago)

haha, the high placing is kind of strange. One of those overrated underrated songs I guess.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:42 (twenty-one years ago)

ILMers be loving soppy indiepop!

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Are 'The State I Am In' and 'The Stars Of Track & Field' both still to come? I lose any sense of wider reality when it comes to Belle & Sebastian.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:44 (twenty-one years ago)

"The Stars of Track & Field" is like 46, I think.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:45 (twenty-one years ago)

We already had "The Stars of Track & Field" (#45 I think) and yes, I believe "The State I Am In" is yet to come.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:45 (twenty-one years ago)

#5. "#1 Crush" - Garbage

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:47 (twenty-one years ago)

i am finding the list quite funny alba!

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:47 (twenty-one years ago)

and baffling obvs.

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:47 (twenty-one years ago)

as long as mary j blige beats the cardigans all will be well

tricky (disco stu), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:48 (twenty-one years ago)

"Lovefool" is a victory for all the great late 90s lounge pop.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I am baffled by the Cardigans. I remember it very clearly, I just never liked it or realised that so many did.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:49 (twenty-one years ago)

"Real Love" was my #14. I don't think it has a chance, but I've been totally wrong about my estimations for that so far so maybe it does. I'd love to see it.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:50 (twenty-one years ago)

The Cardigans???

If Everlong doesn't make it I swear to God I am gonna kill all you motherfuckers.

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha, I actually hate "Lovefool", but I kinda love how it took by surprise everyone waiting for a indie/rap/techno three-way tie.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:50 (twenty-one years ago)

SURPRISE SLEEPER "HEY JEALOUSY" IN THE TOP 20 IT COULD HAPPEN

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I almost voted for "Real Love," but then I listened to it again for the first time in a few years and found it less thrilling than I'd remembered.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:51 (twenty-one years ago)

BELLE AND SEBASTIAN - "The State I Am In"

(520 pts, 24 votes, 2 first place)

http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B000007WND.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

"The lyric to 'The State I Am In' is quite good. The scene in the opening verse is fantastic and original. The part about the crippled child bride is puzzling and hard to phantom (as Mandee likes to say) -dependence, resentment, the self-serving aspect in helping others. It reminds me of Symphony Pastorale and The Sweet Hereafter."

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:51 (twenty-one years ago)

If Everlong doesn't make it I swear to God I am gonna kill all you motherfuckers.

OTM.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I would've been more positively surprised had "Find Me (Odyssey to Anyoona)", "Rhythm Is a Dancer", "The Key, the Secret" or "Rhythm of the Night" made the list, but I guess there's little love for Europop here.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:52 (twenty-one years ago)

ha - at first i thought that said 'everlast'!

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:52 (twenty-one years ago)

if everlong doesn't make it blame me for not voting thirty

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:53 (twenty-one years ago)

all the "prediction" tracks are popping up BEFORE the top 20. Either beauty or horror awaits.

uh oh, Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:53 (twenty-one years ago)

if "sex-type thing" pops up i'm gonna be wishing more brits had voted

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't want to give away anything so I'll ixnay on the ollectivecay oulsay

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:56 (twenty-one years ago)

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha was "Even Flow" even nominated?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:57 (twenty-one years ago)

20 to go, and I'll see if I can't get through them tomorrow.
