what is the criticism of DL again? that it doesn't deserve its ubiquity (relative ubiquity - almost no one knows who the fuck william basinski is irl)?
my criticism of DL, within the context of this thread, is that it's not really in the "Eastre" zone

haha yeah that’s what i’m getting at
i have been kranky about this sort of thing for a long time though (see also kompakt vs other house music)
― the late great, Wednesday, 9 May 2018 19:47 (eight years ago)
are concepts and origin stories rockist?

what you think pop stars don't have press releases
― flamenco drop (BradNelson), Wednesday, 9 May 2018 19:48 (eight years ago)
well i think lots of marketing of pop music is rockist
but i’m mostly kidding, i think the lens of rockism vs popism is not so useful anymore in 2018
― the late great, Wednesday, 9 May 2018 19:50 (eight years ago)
this Basinski / rockism derail is fun but seriously people, NTS Session 4
― Paul Ponzi, Wednesday, 9 May 2018 19:51 (eight years ago)
i guess i just don't think anyone or anything is to blame for DL's status as the Kind of Blue of very long conceptual ambient music. before DL, was there another piece of music exploring similar themes that the buy 12 albums a year crowd knew about? Alvin Lucier's I Am Sitting in a Room, maybe? dunno, just makes sense to me that DL would assume that position, and the world is better for it imo

some of the Quaristice "EP" tracks that are super long
i will give these a listen today, though - i remember being a bit stymied by the initial Quaristice release, but i never dove into the remix/EP stuff accompanying it

xp The Sinking of the Titanic maybe?
― mh, Wednesday, 9 May 2018 20:00 (eight years ago)
i think the basinski discussion is sort of topical - autechre doing drone seems like part of their new thing

― brimstead, Wednesday, 9 May 2018 20:14 (eight years ago)
can't think of many Ae tracks like eastre, besides "Outpt" (ep7) - similarly repetitive / slight variations on each pass. "pt2ph8" (Oversteps) is another sort of meditative zone, although it's markedly different in its tone and mood - def more brief/ambient and pleasant.
The Sinking of the Titanic is a good suggestion.

the “concept” of disintegration loops seems a bit straightforward to me compared to the work done by conceptual artists (of the visual sort)maybe i'm not moving in the right circles but conceptual visual art has always seemed like the thinnest gruel to me.

Strangely, the conversation has reminded me that they used to play* this, in the full long version, on their short-lived late night radio show:

this is more of a steady build than the ebb and flow of eastre but otherwise it's one of the closest things i could think of:

there were a bunch of drone type artists at their atp iirc
― the late great, Wednesday, 9 May 2018 20:55 (eight years ago)
basinski’s elevation to the default drone music reference point is completely beyond me
i had no idea how alone in the wilderness i felt on this until reading yr comment
but anyway yeah, same

ledge i refer only to conceptual art pre-90s
tho maybe you hate that too?
― the late great, Thursday, 10 May 2018 02:13 (eight years ago)
well there is a lot of bad conceptual art, it’s true
if i understand it correctly the concept is “these tapes are disintegrating the twin towers disintegrated too do u see?” which seems a bit on the nose
― the late great, Thursday, 10 May 2018 02:18 (eight years ago)
like karl says though basinski probably looms larger in my consciousness than in that of music fans in general
― the late great, Thursday, 10 May 2018 02:22 (eight years ago)
as a longform conceptual drone album, Coil's Time Machines from a few years earlier is a lot more interesting sounding to me than The Disintegration Loops

nah was thinking more of e.g. the modern trend of writing shit slogans in neon.
the twin towers happening at the same time was just a coincidence, though maybe it's doubtful whether the loops would be as well known without that ahem "fortunate" marketing tie in.
― lana del boy (ledge), Thursday, 10 May 2018 07:57 (eight years ago)
in a very real sense aren't we all disintegrating loops?

the ish around conceptual art is it only happened because critics consistently conceptualize art but in the spirit of Against Interpretation there's no problem there except with Banky. Banky is bad and people who like his work should feel bad.
― hepatitis groan (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 10 May 2018 08:44 (eight years ago)
as soon as you start to critique anything in extra-material terms you are doing conceptual art how d'you like them bananas?
― hepatitis groan (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 10 May 2018 08:46 (eight years ago)
oh shit i've been missing the eastre discussion
imo it's the best thing on elseq OR NTS
and the ending is up there with the ending of 'soon' or w/e
― imago, Thursday, 10 May 2018 09:07 (eight years ago)
For NTS4, I think some Steve Roach stuff might be in the ballpark: Etheric Imprints, Possible Planet, Future Flows, Mystic Chords & Sacred Spaces, Magnificent Void.
― Pataphysician, Thursday, 10 May 2018 17:12 (eight years ago)
roach was my immediate thought

"turbile epic casual, stpl idle" is very Roach-y too

"all end" is nice but it's all about that first hour, and those first four tracks

checking out the hafler trio collab .. ae's touch on it seems pretty light? it's very much a hafler trio album.

― braunld (Lowell N. Behold'n), Friday, 11 May 2018 23:45 (eight years ago)
someone on this thread i think was saying that some of nts isn't really that far off from amber. i had that in mind today and discovered "clustro casual" from nts 3 sounds a lot like "teartear"
i hope this doesn't come across as too self-indulgent, but i wanted to put down how i've been experiencing these last three releases (nts, elseq and exai), because it seems like i probably wouldn't have become so attached to them if i'd heard them in another context. basically i play them on headphones while i'm running on mountain bike trails for 50+ minutes at a time. so i'm listening for long enough to just let several tracks play through. and i think they mirror the experience of trail running in the sense that transitions from step to step can be very dynamic, contrasting and broken up, but there are these sustained sections where your steps seem to be broken up in the same way, or where there's a larger trend or pattern going on. and then suddenly, the trend just changes. so i i guess i've become convinced that what they're doing correlates to the experience of moving through a dynamic natural landscape - the tiny variations, the larger trends formed by unidirectional forces, the time it takes to traverse each section and the sudden transitions between sections.
― you bet, nancy (map), Saturday, 12 May 2018 05:25 (eight years ago)
Yep, "four of seven" sounds lifted straight out of the Amber era too. Also noticed the pads from "Altibzz" creeping in at the end of "debris_funk", I think.
Landscaping is a good way to think of the long tracks, like worlds to visit and look around.
― startled macropod (MatthewK), Saturday, 12 May 2018 06:27 (eight years ago)
Maybe they are seeding the new algorithms with old tracks?
There's a track in exai that is obviously (to me) based on Being Boiled. Using their own tunes seems to be an obvious step.
(I've not got beyond nts3 yet, have been listening to exai / elseq lately)
― koogs, Saturday, 12 May 2018 09:52 (eight years ago)
good post, map. I haven't listened to this on a run yet but you're making me want to

I feel a bit like I'm playing "chicken" with the CD box.
Can't quite bring myself to buy it, will be a bit gutted if I miss out on it.
― djh, Saturday, 12 May 2018 16:04 (eight years ago)
I looked up how their favorite software works, and yeah, starting with one of their own tracks and manipulating the parameters seems like a no-brainer strategy. I have often wondered to what extent the album tracks are improvised, whether they are more or less composed in one pass or tweaked over the course of several sessions.
― Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 12 May 2018 16:21 (eight years ago)
i play them on headphones while i'm running on mountain bike trailsrunning on mountain biking trails, what disgusting savagery is this.
