Autechre: Classic or Dud?

but it's certainly making me want to go back and listen to what i missed! especially elseq. but these days i like to albums many listens before moving on ("slow listening" is the relevant recent neologism, i think?), so i'll let NTS1-4 sink in for quite a while before going back to elseq.

i've listened to the first third of elseq about 80 times, the rest about 45 times

Not sure I'll bother with my planned whittled down NTS compilation. I just made a preliminary playlist of my favorites from memory and it's already nearly half the length of the entire set (and that's without "all end"). Album (???) of the year for me, easily.

Yeah with NTS 4 being so solid, my "abridged" version is still nearly 5 hours long.

I'm going to some show and I know "will this be better than listening to the new Autechre on my couch" is the wrong question, buuuuut

I don't think anyone is expected to listen to this whole thing straight through.

the ideas are nice but they're still doling out just 1 idea per track and the ideas don't really carry the tracks for 10+ minutes

xp i will take that suggestion tomorrow and report back

if you're into long-winded psychedelic or progressive music (a lot of which is "bad" in similar ways) this really shouldn't be that hard to give a fair shot to.

i am into long-winded progressive music. i just listened to a two hour taj mahal travellers album.

i just listened to bqbqbq, it sounds like a clear records interlude track stretched out to 11 minutes

debris_funk sounds like ... gantz graf played at the wrong speed (too slow)

gonk_steady_one is like the breakdown of a circa-2001 glitch hop track stretched out to 23 minutes!!!

try "13 ctrl" or maybe "north spiral". i feel like those keep the ideas flowing at a pretty good rate. i do think some of the tracks here don't refresh very much or very quickly.

tlg i didn't mean to call you old. and i mean it sounds like you know what's up if you like bladelores. just a matter of whether you want to like the rest of what they're doing or not. it's giving me a lot of joy right now but i know you listen to a wide variety of music that does the same for you, meanwhile all i've been listening to for the past two weeks is autechre lol.

it's ok to not like autechre NTS but only after you've listened to each session 10 times.

track length and internal variety, idk some of them do feel like they spin on one spot for too long, bqbqbq in particular hasn't convinced me it needs to be more than a couple of minutes long. or less. but in general what strikes me with these sessions is how each one feels like a regular album - 10 or so individual tracks to be digested in one sitting - not like a double album or a live session. they don't feel like a marathon to sit through.

but then i only just learnt that incunabula is close on 80 mins long (and amber is 75)! they just fly by!

While I wouldn't go quite that far, this still seems like second or even third-rate Autechre to me. It's 8 fun-packed hours of "Olsa for n" !!

We must be listening to different albums. Most of these tracks are to my ears constantly evolving, and there are many where the entire mood of the piece changes (sometimes almost too abruptly) and goes in an entire different direction. Off the top of my head I'm thinking of "tt1pd," "north spiral," "gonk steady one," "glos ceramic," and "splesh." Dunno how anyone could say these tracks "spin on one spot for too long" or that they are "doling out just 1 idea per track."

How many "ideas per track" are there on a Taj Mahal Travellers album, btw?

Spoke to some Autechre fans in real life today and it seems I don't like "32a_reflected" or "north spiral" nearly as much as everyone else. Good tracks, both, but neither made my cut

another message board I was on was talking about the different ways you can count "e0" - if you hear the cymbal on the 1 and 3 it's a different experience than hearing it on the 2 and 4. Switching up the way you hear it while you are listening (more difficult than it sounds!) is a headfuck because both totally sound right

That's funny, because I had trouble hearing it as 2/4 at first! For me, the cymbal naturally lands on the 1 and 3. It took effort for me to count it differently.

Who was it that compared Ae to magic eye paintings? That was otm, and I'd throw in The Crying of Lot 49 and Choose Your Own Adventure books
