autechre is NOT a band

good day, sir!

the late great, Saturday, 28 April 2018 01:58 (six years ago) link

Relax, it's not the end of Autechre. They're hitting peak form, touring, releasing more and more music. People asked the same thing when L-Event finished with "Newbound".

startled macropod (MatthewK), Saturday, 28 April 2018 02:29 (six years ago) link

I love you, Whiney. Never change.

octobeard, Saturday, 28 April 2018 06:57 (six years ago) link

Upgrade by definition means things getting better. If it isn't better it's not an upgrade.

looks like my 20-year experience of Windows is an outlier then

the vomming of the snark (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 28 April 2018 10:21 (six years ago) link

If anyone else is struggling with the meaning of the word upgrade I can suggest a dictionary or y'know, context ;-)

You're even free to look it up on your Encarta CD-ROM.

Gonk Steady Crew (Noel Emits), Saturday, 28 April 2018 10:30 (six years ago) link

love it when ilxors wilfully misunderstand each other

brand new universal harvester (dog latin), Saturday, 28 April 2018 11:11 (six years ago) link

it's a wilfully, pugnaciously bad take. if you're saying that software developers don't routinely release things called upgrades that sometimes make the user experience actively worse then i don't know how to argue. if you're saying that an upgrade that doesn't improve the user experience isn't an upgrade then that just semantic nonsense.

i mean it's also entirely irrelevant but fuck it, it's a quiet Saturday.

the vomming of the snark (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 28 April 2018 11:25 (six years ago) link

It's fine if you associate a word with some poor usage but a) that's not what it means and b) it's clear as fuck not what was intended in the original sentence - "software upgrades that make previous iterations redundant."

Also, many software upgrades are actually good.

Gonk Steady Crew (Noel Emits), Saturday, 28 April 2018 11:45 (six years ago) link

Words gain their meaning from usage, and if dictionaries don't show this yet, then that's because they're slow to update.

Frederik B, Saturday, 28 April 2018 12:10 (six years ago) link

So "upgrade" is primarily euphemistic now? Even when qualified as obviously positive?

Funny tho, I genuinely associate software upgrades with cool new stuff that pisses on earlier versions.

Gonk Steady Crew (Noel Emits), Saturday, 28 April 2018 12:13 (six years ago) link

Euphemistic / ironic.

Gonk Steady Crew (Noel Emits), Saturday, 28 April 2018 12:15 (six years ago) link

As a software developer, I can attest that "upgrade" doesn't always mean "better."

Also lol at this thread.

I don't understand why we have to police fans for being enthusiastic and hyperbolic

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Monday, 30 April 2018 23:05 (six years ago) link

enthusiasm is rockist

Paul Ponzi, Monday, 30 April 2018 23:11 (six years ago) link

As someone who has never listened to Autechre, for no particular reasons, these descriptions have convinced me to give them a serious shot.

Van Horn Street, Monday, 30 April 2018 23:13 (six years ago) link

The answer is Whiney perpetually feels he has to be ~ahead of the game~, beat the backlash before it beats him. He'll still put NTS1-4 in his EOTY top 10, just you wait. He'll rave about it yet only in writing he's actually paid for. On here he'll scorn and police people *liking music*. He can't do it without an ~ironic fight~ on a message board. Not realising that tiresome gig is up since, what, 1998?

You could be that person too, Moodles. Alternatively, you might not want to bother with that tiresome meta-post-shizzle stick dragged out into ancient history, making a caricature out of yourself. In which case you are way, way better off. Choose wisely!

lbi's life of limitless european glamour (Le Bateau Ivre), Monday, 30 April 2018 23:15 (six years ago) link

I could? Gosh.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Monday, 30 April 2018 23:17 (six years ago) link

Weary Whiney stick is weary, is all.

I love that Whiney makes fun of ILM! On the other hand, all of those poll choices are my kind of posts, are what I come to ILM for

Lol u all mad

It's called a dictionary

The defensive nonsense on this thread is actually a significant portion of why I need never try to appreciate autechre again after various failed experiments

Props to those who own up to it; everybody else, lol your gods are mortal and lame

El Tomboto, Monday, 30 April 2018 23:39 (six years ago) link

(I like very old autechre; LP5 and later just doesn’t do anything for me, sorry)

El Tomboto, Monday, 30 April 2018 23:40 (six years ago) link

I think the dividing line is just after LP5 tbh (although I love every iteration of Autechre!)

Dan S, Monday, 30 April 2018 23:43 (six years ago) link

I'm ok with saying Autechre is lame or whatever, I just don't see the point of taking people to task for enjoying them the wrong way

it's ok. you don't need to apologize ... (defensive nonsense?)

seriously torn between software upgrade and magic eye poster

flappy bird, Tuesday, 1 May 2018 01:48 (six years ago) link

I'm thinking of moving my Autechre CDs from the "Electronic • Dance" section of my collection to the "Ou

thouse"

outsider music? outlaw country? outré? I haven't heard this new 8-hour-long Autechre album, but I bet it's the perfect soundtrack for the task of arranging and rearranging your CD collection into increasingly byzantine micro-genres :p

the yolk sustains us, we eat whites for days (unregistered), Tuesday, 1 May 2018 02:09 (six years ago) link

lol

the late great, Tuesday, 1 May 2018 02:13 (six years ago) link

software update is the funniest, but the magic eye post has the poetry of an ilx classic like the core, the heart music.

flappy bird, Tuesday, 1 May 2018 03:52 (six years ago) link

Good grief, it's not at all about defending 'fandom' or a daft post. Just a mild reposte in the ironic petty spirit of the thread. Got a bit out of hand but I didn't reach for words like bitch and fool. Apologies map anyway.

Gonk Steady Crew (Noel Emits), Tuesday, 1 May 2018 05:21 (six years ago) link

*riposte

Gonk Steady Crew (Noel Emits), Tuesday, 1 May 2018 05:23 (six years ago) link

it's 8 hours so it covers quite a bit of ground and is hard to broadly characterize, but large swaths of the NTS sessions are the most approachable and conventionally melodic and beautiful they've sounded since the 90s.

these would all be on my autechre greatest hits:

donk steady one (22:25)
e0 (10:25)
cluster casual (11:03)
g1 e 1 (6:59)
column thirteen (17:02)
all end (58:21)

who said that anyway, it's great

flappy bird, Wednesday, 2 May 2018 01:10 (six years ago) link

ugh I hate the idea that there is anything to "get" with Autechre. It's just incredibly great sounding music / sound. I guess you need to listen to a lot to work up a shared aesthetic, but I get the same direct connection from, I dunno, "6IE.CR" that I get from "I Know You Got Soul". No abstract thought required. And I am 99.999% sure that they are motivated the same way, the most cerebral they get is making algorithms to generate / control / sequence the sound, same way a guitarist might study with a new teacher to expand their vocab, but the aesthetic decision making is based on "does this sound fucking cool / moving / menacing" and not "does this advance our art according to manifesto X".
Their DJ sets from the streaming broadcasts around Quaristice / Oversteps / Exai are great listening, just a lot of great Detroit, oldschool, boom-bap and atmospheric work. Sure, some heady and obscure things, but clearly assembled with love and a disregard for cool-factor or w/e.
They get bored with the old shit, they make new shit, it becomes more extreme over time, they acquire more skills at getting what they want and the formats allow more flexibility. I'm glad to be alive while they're doing it.

startled macropod (MatthewK), Wednesday, 2 May 2018 01:25 (six years ago) link

I listen to Autechre lots of different ways. As ambient music (in every sense), as intellectualized generative music (however composed or not), as textured electronic music, as tactile or more conventional beat-driven music, as really precise bricolage, as abstract experimental music. And so on. Subtle distinctions, sometimes, and sometimes what I perceive is just a matter of my mood. Other times it's just a matter of sitting in a different chair.
