― reggie (qualmsley), Tuesday, 15 May 2018 04:25 (eight years ago)
Works for me. I really like "The Louder I Call", though I went back to "Tween" and felt there just wasn't enough there to keep my interest, it just felt too insubstantial and gauzy.
― Gerald McBoing-Boing, Tuesday, 15 May 2018 13:42 (eight years ago)
finally got around to this and it's the best music in the world
― princess of hell (BradNelson), Monday, 9 July 2018 20:05 (seven years ago)
Looking forward to finally seeing them next week.
― Ned Raggett, Monday, 9 July 2018 20:12 (seven years ago)
yeah this album is incredible, possibly my favorite of theirs
― supreme court justice samuel lance-ito (voodoo chili), Monday, 9 July 2018 20:18 (seven years ago)
I love this album so much but I am also devastated that their cover of “We Belong” appears to have disappeared from the internet ;_;
― Tim F, Monday, 9 July 2018 21:45 (seven years ago)
oh solid now i have a fresh grudge against the av club
― princess of hell (BradNelson), Monday, 9 July 2018 21:47 (seven years ago)
pretty sure i ripped that

Great band

last 3 tracks on this are the best part
― ciderpress, Tuesday, 10 July 2018 13:05 (seven years ago)
they're local heroes i grew up seeing them, back when they were called Monarch. glad they're still active despite living in different cities

could maker an argument for tracks 4-5-6 as well.
― Hall of Fam (Spottie), Tuesday, 10 July 2018 21:02 (seven years ago)
damn, this record is gorgeous. decided i'm gonna just listen to their discography all day today
― davey, Tuesday, 10 July 2018 21:58 (seven years ago)
i love this band.
i'm less in love with the latest record than earlier ones (i love jen's guitar playing) but it is very good.
they're great live, go see them if you can. they were one of my highlights this past weekend at the (honestly pretty half-assed) eaux claires festival. just as good in the sunshine as the club i saw them in last. plus a joni mitchell cover!
― goole, Tuesday, 10 July 2018 21:59 (seven years ago)
this album is so good

"it was not natural" in particular

and "say hello." and "you of all people." and "i know it's real"
― princess of hell (BradNelson), Saturday, 27 October 2018 21:13 (seven years ago)
pretty much a perfect record.
― Machine Gunk Jelly (Spottie), Saturday, 27 October 2018 22:49 (seven years ago)
Yeah this is like my platonic ideal of a modern indie rock record, and there’s so much to focus on that it’s easy to overlook the frequently, subtly great lyrics (“and my whole life is in that space: after the cut, before pain”).
― Tim F, Sunday, 28 October 2018 05:49 (seven years ago)
"It Was Not Natural" might be my song of the year, need to keep trying with the rest.
― geoffreyess, Sunday, 28 October 2018 15:44 (seven years ago)
Can't believe it's been 10 years since "Please Concrete" hooked me for life.
― geoffreyess, Sunday, 28 October 2018 15:45 (seven years ago)
it is an excellent record though I think civilian will always be my favorite
― she carries a torch. two torches, actually (Joan Crawford Loves Chachi), Monday, 29 October 2018 01:14 (seven years ago)
yeah I love them all but If Children has always been my favorite. they had this sick song called "Half a Double Man" circa 2008, when they were writing and playing out all the songs that ended up on The Knot. I lost the only bootlegs I had of them playing that song... it was sort of like Deerhoof but heavier.
― flappy bird, Monday, 29 October 2018 04:31 (seven years ago)
I can still hum & drum it

I really love "Evergreen". Seems like a one-off done for some Adult Swim compilation? I don't know much about this band. I liked their last album alright, but never went back. Now I'm re-listening to that as well as sifting through their back catalog.
― beard papa, Thursday, 17 October 2019 19:29 (six years ago)
Hey, I missed that one, thanks for the tip! Adored their last album, nice to hear they're still moving in the same direction.
― Gerald McBoing-Boing, Thursday, 17 October 2019 22:05 (six years ago)
Just read in a Washington Post review of Bon Iver live, that Jenn Wasner is part of the five-piece band backing Justin Vernon/ Bon Iver on this tour
― curmudgeon, Saturday, 19 October 2019 21:00 (six years ago)
"In addition to releasing new material, the group is mounting their most ambitious tour yet. Called JOIN, the tour will feature a newly expanded live band performing not only Wye Oak’s music but songs from Stack and Wasner’s respective solo projects, Joyero and Flock of Dimes, and beyond. These performances will include new music, re-imaginings of songs from deep in their catalog, and hidden gems spanning their parallel creative work."
new song is wonderful:

20 minute No Horizon EP out, a collaboration with the Brooklyn Youth Chorus. First track "AEIOU" is gorgeous. Reminds me a little of Beach House with those drums and guitars.

Yeah this is lovely - though the use of a children’s choir throughout reminds me oddly of Verspertine.

new flock of dimes record seems like it's gonna be fucking amazing based on the singles

album of the year for me so far, feels like it might end up my favorite overall Wasner thing that isn't Shriek
― swing out sister: live in new donk city (geoffreyess), Thursday, 8 April 2021 01:46 (five years ago)
Love the bits of this flirts with country. I can almost imagine an Emmylou Harris harmony on "Awake for the Sunrise."
― Indexed, Thursday, 8 April 2021 19:44 (five years ago)
this album is really good
what is with the rhythm on "two" though? is it in 15/16 or something?
― ufo, Monday, 12 April 2021 08:06 (five years ago)
it's so close to being 4/4 but just slightly off-kilter that it's a really strange listen. i can't actually think of any other songs that do the same thing
― ufo, Monday, 12 April 2021 08:08 (five years ago)

good lord is this excellent. very much in the vein of the last wye oak album which i also absolutely loved.

i think it is in 4/4 but syncopated so the downbeat hits a little before the 4 beat. could be wrong. the chorus is absolutely in 4/4, tho.
― voodoo chili, Tuesday, 13 April 2021 16:32 (five years ago)
they very quickly renamed the band after Maryland's state tree when they signed with Merge and realized they couldn't keep using the name they self-released the first album under, Monarch.
those first couple Monarch shows i saw are a cherished memory, knew they were a special band right away.
― some dude, Tuesday, 16 December 2025 19:25 (five months ago)
Shamefully belatedly getting around to this album. It is, of course, lovely, but also I was struck by how often it makes me think of Christine McVie
― Tim F, Wednesday, 28 January 2026 09:18 (four months ago)
yeah basically a perfect masterpiece. got through my last cycle by putting it on repeat and crying for hours. thanks jenn
― ivy., Wednesday, 28 January 2026 14:04 (four months ago)
Are you talking about "The Life You Save"?
― Gerald McBoing-Boing, Friday, 30 January 2026 21:06 (four months ago)
I was, and I assume Ivy was too.
In terms of musical style my peak Jenn period was approx 2015 - 2018 when she at peak Peter Gabriel, but even with the more naturalist vibe she goes for now she is an undeniably devastating writer and performer
