Kacey Musgraves - 2013 Anticipation

this is cool, but not quite as good as Little Big Town's comparable stuff

I feel like she didn't write these songs for her own voice... she keeps reaching for high notes that don't seem to suit her range.

(NB - I can't sing or write songs for @#$%.)

The pre-chorus of "Love Is a Wild Thing" really illustrates what I'm talking about, btw.

this album is really great!

wow the lyric video for "high horse" is like vaporwave.

at first, i did think the "high horse" chorus melody felt stilted or forced somehow, but then i grew to love it. maybe in part because of the awkwardness?

on my 3rd listen of the day, stunning album

"mother" is such a weird little composition. its brevity catches me off guard every time.

That's the line that reminded me of Neil Young

our reactions to 'slow burn':

me: 'this has a really stunning arrangement but i wish it changed up the basic bliss-out chord-sequence a bit more, we've heard it a zillion times'

tt: 'why not hear it another?'

it does modulate the third chord of the sequence nicely i guess

Oh come on that chord change in Slow Burn is amazing and completely elevates the entire song, I could hear it again and again for much longer than the song lasts.

What I don't get is how Beck's Sea Change can get such a (wrongful) kicking in the recent poll of his albums, and yet this is widely lauded - they occupy a similar sonic space and vibe to me (this is more pop, and less orchestrated, obv)

I know this is one of my insane comparisons and Completely Rong etc but I can't shake it. It's a positive comparison at least!

Wonder Woman is another good song. High Horse less so

Rainbow might be better if another high-profile female US popstar hadn't put out a piano ballad called, uh, Rainbow just a year ago, and it be quite a bit better than this. You played yourself Kacey!

That aside (and High Horse), this is a solid album with a couple of grand highlights

I'm not sure I get what you guys talk about : the 3rd chord of the 4 chords sequence is the one you enjoy particularly ? I don't really see what's special about it.

Loving this record but I must say "Space Cowboy" is a skip, it was a clever pun the first time I heard it, but repeating the pun 63 times wears out the welcome.

Listening to Pageant Material now, and particularly digging "Good Ol' Boys Club" -- got some funk to it, reminds me of Bobbi Gentry.

I guess the lesson is I most enjoy her songs that have some groove to them.

I really like the latest album. Most of the melodies are great and the production is very nice but it's a bit too "clean" and the lyrics are pretty bland overall.
I think I prefer the previous one : the melodies may not be as good but it's more country and charming (and sounds less like Starbucks music) + the lyrics are much better and funnier.

I've been skipping "Velvet Elvis", yes, the dopiest song on here.

ah I suppose it's the middle 8 followed by the instrumental/orchestrated part with vocal harmonies (which is the same chord sequence as the rest of the song but with variations on the bass).

Perfect crossover between my daughters and I, so it's had a lot of play here, and holds up very well.

i played it again last night! "slow burn" is probably my favorite song she's ever done now.

i think Nashville is a super duper underrated record

Golden Hour is also perfect. Whole album is a real gem.

my one qualm with "golden hour" is that "you're my golden hour" comes 3 songs after "you're my velvet elvis" but it's really a very beautiful song
