That whirling synth isn't in the the original song but it's originally from Supernature. It's one of those remix/production tricks that seemingly always works though - Lindstrom wheeled it out on his last album for the "I am going to be extra extra ostentatious right about... now" moment. It's pretty much the ultimate icing-on-cake disco flourish.

Enormous Epic (Matt DC), Friday, 22 May 2009 09:39 (seventeen years ago)

I posted this in the DJ mixes thread, but for folks who haven't seen it and may be interested here's a link to a mix I did that was heavily influenced by Aeroplane and features a few of their remixes/tracks.

1 Give Me Your Love (Tangoterje Edit) :: CURTIS MAYFIELD
2 Caramellas :: AEROPLANE
3 Connections (Ewan Pearson Slo NRG Dub) :: MOON UNIT
4 Connections (Original Mix) :: MOON UNIT
5 Williams Blood (Aeroplane Remix) :: GRACE JONES
6 Down ‘Til 7 (Lindstrom & Prins Thomas Vocal Mix) :: SILVER CITY
7 Just An Illusion (Lindstrom Dub/Todd Terje Edit) :: IMAGINATION
8 Woman (A Makhnovshchina Repossession) :: IT’S A FINE LINE
9 Motor City :: XAVER NAUDASCHER
10 Ain’t Nobody (Frankie Knuckles Hallucinogenic Dub) :: RUFUS & CHAKA KHAN
11 Italian Boy :: ENZO PONZIO
12 Moon Unit Pt 2 :: MOGG & NAUDASCHER
13 Let’s Practise :: LINDSTROM & SOLALE
14 Kilometer (Aeroplane ‘Italo 84’ Remix) :: SEBASTIEN TELLIER

groovypanda, Friday, 22 May 2009 09:59 (seventeen years ago)

aaah yes, supernature. no wonder it sounded kinda familiar.

"La Serenissima :: EINE KLEINE NACHTMUSIK"

I haven't heard yr mix yet groovepanda but that's an awesome tune to finish with.

Tim F, Friday, 22 May 2009 11:08 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah that tracklist looks A+++. I really want to hear that Todd Terje edit of Curtis Mayfield as well.

Enormous Epic (Matt DC), Friday, 22 May 2009 11:18 (seventeen years ago)

also this: 10 Ain’t Nobody (Frankie Knuckles Hallucinogenic Dub) :: RUFUS & CHAKA KHAN

just sayin, Friday, 22 May 2009 11:23 (seventeen years ago)

yeah i'm getting that now groovypanda, looks great. thanks.

xp yes that is amazing.

jed_, Friday, 22 May 2009 11:28 (seventeen years ago)

groovypanda, this is really great. thanks!

the only transition i'm not crazy about is the one out of "williams blood" but it's working for me at home anyway. much appreciated. good work.

jed_, Saturday, 23 May 2009 00:05 (seventeen years ago)

jammed to it at work tonight, groovypanda. really fantastic!

The Devil's Avocado (Gukbe), Saturday, 23 May 2009 01:08 (seventeen years ago)

Might as well register since I see two things not yet in this thread:

1. They're apparently recording the album with soulwax and au revoir simone: http://vimeo.com/4532012 -- I don't like that snippet, unfortunately. And why are Aeroplane collaborating with Soulwax when Aeroplane are 100000x as good?

2. Also, they made a beautiful 5 minute mash-up for some radio show: the Annie Mac Mini Mix: search and you'll find a mediafire link pretty easily. Tracklist:

Michael Jackson : “Another Part Of Me”
Laura Branigan : “Self Control”
Baltimora : “Tarzan Boy”
Mr Oizo : “Positif”
Mike Snow : “Animal”
Marguaritas : “Marguaritas”
Ricchi & Poveri : “Sara Perche Ti Amo”
La Bionda : “I Got Your Number
The Juan McLean : “One Day”
Gino Soccio : “Remember”
Boney M : “Kalimba De Luna”
The Krays : “We Are Ready When You Are”
The Beach Boys : “Good Vibrations Outtakes”
Macho : “Not Tonight”
Mike Mareen : “Dancing In The Dark”
Empire Of The Sun : “We Are The People”
Friendly Fires Feat. Au Revoir Simone : “Paris”
Kidz : “Miss Mars”
The Golden Filter : “Solid Gold”
D Pulse : “More” - Foto Mix
Droid : “Mito”

I particularly love the bit from dancing in the dark that they use together with the vocals from empire of the sun. That should be a song, damnit!

bad geometry, Tuesday, 26 May 2009 04:14 (seventeen years ago)

that's a track from au revoir simone's new album. so seems like a remix.

cutty, Tuesday, 26 May 2009 12:55 (seventeen years ago)

(the vocal track, that is)

cutty, Tuesday, 26 May 2009 12:55 (seventeen years ago)

Is the Au Revoir Simone album any good? I didn't know it existed.

Tits Bramble (Matt DC), Tuesday, 26 May 2009 13:43 (seventeen years ago)

yes, maybe their best yet

cutty, Tuesday, 26 May 2009 14:29 (seventeen years ago)

Listened to their remix of Sebastien Tellier for the first time and the OMG HOLY SHIT moment came when just before the 4th minute that whirling synth (?) hits.

^^^^ This!!! the slo-mo breakdown is so fucking great

WRT to the discussion upthread about the electric sheen of this shit, i think this may have already been said but it's ultimately just pop dance. i mean in interviews that's how they've described it. their first release seemed to want to operate within the nubalearica whatever vein, but esp since they've been remixing all these pop people it seems to make sense. it's just the catchiest shit you've ever heard

space cowboy (san frandisco), Tuesday, 26 May 2009 16:57 (seventeen years ago)

i guess tho the cheesiness of some of the remixes is balearic at heart

space cowboy (san frandisco), Tuesday, 26 May 2009 16:57 (seventeen years ago)

also the mention of todd terje here, kinda makes me want to start a taking sides for remixes todd terje vs. aeroplane? but i feel like my brain would explode

space cowboy (san frandisco), Tuesday, 26 May 2009 16:58 (seventeen years ago)

i think this may have already been said but it's ultimately just pop dance
yeah i was sort of thrown for a loop with their mixmag mix because of just how relatively poppy it was; nothing matches the crisp perfection of that first 12" for me, those tracks are like solid perfectly engineered geometry

QE II, Tuesday, 26 May 2009 18:26 (seventeen years ago)

whatever the fuck that means

QE II, Tuesday, 26 May 2009 18:26 (seventeen years ago)

it means like a square or a triangle

s1ocki, Tuesday, 26 May 2009 18:43 (seventeen years ago)

groovypanda yr mix is tremendous! where did you get that L&PT mix of Silver City? I can't find that one anywhere.

snippet sounds pretty radd to me

i am the eye in the sky... (psychgawsple), Tuesday, 26 May 2009 20:21 (seventeen years ago)

what was their first twelve inch, I only heard of them around William's Blood/Paris

❉❉❉❉❉❉❉❉Plaxico❉❉❉❉❉❉❉❉❉ (I know, right?), Tuesday, 26 May 2009 20:24 (seventeen years ago)

Aeroplane/Caramellas 12 inch

psychgawsple, Tuesday, 26 May 2009 20:28 (seventeen years ago)

oh wow, I've only heard (of) Caramellas off of that

❉❉❉❉❉❉❉❉Plaxico❉❉❉❉❉❉❉❉❉ (I know, right?), Tuesday, 26 May 2009 20:32 (seventeen years ago)

self-titled track was used in quite epic fashion after al usher's "here today", i play caramellas often cuz it is solid perfectly engineered geometry

― cutty, Tuesday, May 26, 2009 7:55 AM (13 hours ago) Bookmark

oh okay, didn't know that. the title of the video is "recording with aeroplane" though so I'd still guess that au revoir simone are going to be on the album, but that's only a guess.

on the digital pop sheen - the only time I've noticed or that it's bothered me is with the "Now 'Til 69" remix, which is their worst by far imo. liked it the first few times, despise it now. otherwise i don't really get that criticism.

bad geometry, Wednesday, 27 May 2009 02:38 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, the "Now 'Til 69" remix is their most disposable work yet. btw, what do you call the use of "supernature" synth in the remix for tellier? sampling, tribute, borrowing or errr stealing?

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Wednesday, 27 May 2009 08:39 (seventeen years ago)

Homage.

Tits Bramble (Matt DC), Wednesday, 27 May 2009 08:59 (seventeen years ago)

did they pay any royalty for that?

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Wednesday, 27 May 2009 09:41 (seventeen years ago)

I know I'm way behind the curve on this one, but people kept playing that bloody Sebastian Tellier mix they did and every time it came on, my ears would prick up and go OOOOOOOHHHHH WHAT IS THAT MAKING THAT SOUND...

That synth sound at the beginning of the track - where it's all swhirly and phased out, and it kind of ... bubbles ... the echoes/delay on it makes a noise like waves breaking on pebbles and it is the most amazing sound I've ever heard.

I was kind of gutted when I heard the original song - it's nothing like.

Also, that rejected Grace Jones track is ... sublime. That's the only word for it. Shivers down my back every time I hear it. How can seven minutes feel like a heartbeat? It's just so swooshy and lush.

Now I am going to read the rest of the thread and see what else I've been missing.

This summer feels weird. I was trying to work out if my tastes had changed so much - or if fashion has just turned around, and suddenly all the things I'm attracted to in sound (phase, psychedelia, texture, layering, fuzziness) are suddenly back "in" like someone waved a magic wand and turned everything swhirly.

If My Body's A Club You're My Disco Ball (Masonic Boom), Tuesday, 2 June 2009 10:51 (seventeen years ago)

Masonic, I think you'd really like their Resident Advisor mix.

Tim F, Tuesday, 2 June 2009 10:53 (seventeen years ago)

Is that the one that starts (freakily enough) with They Came From The Stars (I Saw Them)?

I was listening to that yesterday, and apart from that, it made me very happy indeed.

If My Body's A Club You're My Disco Ball (Masonic Boom), Tuesday, 2 June 2009 10:55 (seventeen years ago)

It starts with Fleet Foxes, but They Came From The Stars appear early on.

My 10 track Aeroplane primer, excluding the ones you've already heard, would probably include:

Aeroplane feat. Kathy Diamond - Whispers
Friendly Fires - Paris (Aeroplane Remix feat. Au Revoir Simone)
Aeroplane - Caramellas
Shortwave Set - Now Til 69 (Aeroplane Remix)
Aeroplane - Pacific Air Race
David Rubato - Circuit (Aeroplane Remix)
Allez Allez - Allez Allez (Aeroplane Remix)
Cobra Dukes - Airtight (Aeroplane Remix)
Lindstrom & Solale - Baby I Can't Stop (Aeroplane Remix)
MGMT - Electric Feel (Aeroplane Remix)

The first three on that list being absolutely essential. As is this compilation, the vast majority of which is in the same vein.

Tits Bramble (Matt DC), Tuesday, 2 June 2009 10:59 (seventeen years ago)

xp Starts with Fleet Foxes' "White Winter Hymnal" IIRC.

Achtung Blobby (Neil S), Tuesday, 2 June 2009 10:59 (seventeen years ago)

Tracklist
01. Fleet Foxes - White Winter Hymnal - Bella Union
02. Quixote Feat. Lisa Li-Lund - Before I Started to Dance (Prins Thomas Diskomiks) - Versatile
03. They Came From The Stars I Saw Them - Moon Song (Holy Ghost! Remix) - This Is Not An Exit
04. The Shortwave Set - Now Til 69 (Aeroplane Remix) - Wall Of Sound
05. Dolle Jolle - Balearic Incarnation (Todd Terje Mix) - Permanent Vacation
06. Eine Klein Nacht Muzik - La Serenissima - Modular Recordings
07. David Rubato - Circuit (Aeroplane Remix) - Institubes
08. Eddy Meets Yannah - Solid Ground (Crazy P Remix) - Solid Ground

10. Mugwump - Yajna - Disco 45/Kompakt
11. Bostro Pesopeo - Communquis - Permanent Vacation
12. Maelstrom - Enter The Cosmo (Sankt Goran & Erik Sidung Remix) - Solar Disco

I'm trying to get the Mixmag one, too, but the link is broken. (suspect Erol may have admin machined it off the face of the forum)

If My Body's A Club You're My Disco Ball (Masonic Boom), Tuesday, 2 June 2009 11:08 (seventeen years ago)

saw them in Glasgow on Saturday. Audience going mental for Friendly Fires was great, and ending on William's Blood was perfect. Highly recommended.

The Devil's Avocado (Gukbe), Tuesday, 2 June 2009 11:14 (seventeen years ago)

They're playing at Loop Festival. Between them and Fever Ray and Telepathe and The Field and everything else, it's looking better and better.

If My Body's A Club You're My Disco Ball (Masonic Boom), Tuesday, 2 June 2009 11:19 (seventeen years ago)

dunno if anyone has posted this mix, but i have been playing it pretty regularly and generally having freakouts while running on the treadmill, just sayin

dope mix imho

autogucci cru (deej), Friday, 5 June 2009 23:21 (seventeen years ago)

The flow of remixes appears to have dried up since the start of this thread :(

Matt DC, Friday, 5 June 2009 23:35 (seventeen years ago)

recording an album syndrome.

Henrik Schwarz has said he's gonna stop making remixes for a while because he keeps on squandering ideas he'd otherwise save for his album and for 12 inches.

Tim F, Saturday, 6 June 2009 03:12 (seventeen years ago)

they're (or "they"'re) coming back to Australia in September btw Tim, playing Parklife with Little Boots, Junior Boys, Erol Alkan, Tiga, Empire Of The Sun, Lady Sov, La Roux, Glimmers, VonStroke etc.

other instrument (sic), Saturday, 6 June 2009 07:01 (seventeen years ago)

album? WANT WANT WANT

cannot stop playing that Grace Jones remix. It's kind of become my default music for the summer.
