surely y'all have listened to sad songs that sound happy

Whiney G. Weingarten, Tuesday, 3 April 2018 17:49 (eight years ago)

xp it's just a wasted opportunity to me, great melody, production and delivery but the lyrics do nothing for it

'Cause everyone knows someone who kills the buzz
Every time they open up their mouth

^^hardly lyrics imo

I think placeholder "let's go dancing" lyrics had been preferable

niels, Tuesday, 3 April 2018 17:53 (eight years ago)

Feeling targeted by that lyric huh

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Tuesday, 3 April 2018 17:56 (eight years ago)

haha, nice

niels, Tuesday, 3 April 2018 17:57 (eight years ago)

the lyrics are weird -- the song is thisclose to being a dog whistle (because "high horse" is usually associated with moralizing) but decides it wants to be "That Don't Impress Me Much" at the last minute

aloha darkness my old friend (katherine), Tuesday, 3 April 2018 18:21 (eight years ago)

otm!

but That Don't Impress Me Much is funny

niels, Tuesday, 3 April 2018 18:35 (eight years ago)

High Horse is great, obviously. I don’t know what’s wrong with you people.

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Tuesday, 3 April 2018 18:55 (eight years ago)

get off that fucking horse

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 3 April 2018 19:03 (eight years ago)

it's a fine horse, sir, and i can see quite far when sitting on it.

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Tuesday, 3 April 2018 19:12 (eight years ago)

fuck a horse, ride a cowboy

The Desus & Mero Chain (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 3 April 2018 19:13 (eight years ago)

Love Is a Wild Thing is the best track imo

omar little, Tuesday, 3 April 2018 19:15 (eight years ago)

popism means embracing the pop-adjacent music embraced by a bunch of nerds who stanned for art brut instead of the stuff actually marketed to america

― Whiney G. Weingarten, Tuesday, April 3, 2018 1:24 PM (two hours ago) Bookmark

yeah who can forget real america's wholesale embracing of "milf money"

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 3 April 2018 19:49 (eight years ago)

milf money was a good song

dyl, Wednesday, 4 April 2018 01:43 (eight years ago)

what in god's name was good about milf money

had (crüt), Wednesday, 4 April 2018 02:25 (eight years ago)

xp I'm not saying High Horse isn't a good song, I just feel like the lyrics are a wasted opportunity, spending all that chorus energy dismissing some vague and indistinct character when it could have been about Kacey/me/us

niels, Wednesday, 4 April 2018 06:17 (eight years ago)

I like this a lot. Thought her debut was overrated so I didn't even bother with Pageant Material but clearly I need to go back and reassess.

"Butterflies" always puts Genesis's "That's All" in my head.

evol j, Wednesday, 4 April 2018 16:28 (eight years ago)

*Shockingly* good this album.

piscesx, Wednesday, 4 April 2018 23:55 (eight years ago)

why shockingly?

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 4 April 2018 23:58 (eight years ago)

bc of the tingles

j., Thursday, 5 April 2018 00:08 (eight years ago)

i dunno i thought it'd be more country-ish or sumthin. more like the Dixie Chicks.

piscesx, Thursday, 5 April 2018 01:02 (eight years ago)

dixie chicks? had you heard any of her music before this album?

dyl, Thursday, 5 April 2018 02:12 (eight years ago)

no never, i just read she had been a country singer or something.

piscesx, Thursday, 5 April 2018 02:56 (eight years ago)

i gave this a proper second listen

there's a cluster of three tracks that are just amazing

mother
love is a wild thing
space cowboy

happy & sad is potentially a great track as well, which would make that four great tracks back to back, but it might be a grower

i'm a sucker for piano tracks so rainbow is a very nice outro

also what's the problem with smoking weed? she seems/sounds chill and would be cool to hang with

best track has to be love is a wild thing, though -- those keys after the music stops (at 2:56) reminds me a lot of future islands for some reason

stylistically it is a lot more varied than her previous albums i want to say, as well

F# A# (∞), Thursday, 5 April 2018 04:03 (eight years ago)

xpost pretty sure she's still a country singer

President Keyes, Friday, 6 April 2018 14:02 (eight years ago)

xpost No problem with the weed smoke, it's just a little one note to me. All the "high" and "buzz" et al. puns just distract me a little.

And LOL at the song that references that Survivor ballad. Is that ... on purpose?

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 6 April 2018 14:52 (eight years ago)

this is cool, but not quite as good as Little Big Town's comparable stuff

Heez, Friday, 6 April 2018 17:52 (eight years ago)

I feel like she didn't write these songs for her own voice... she keeps reaching for high notes that don't seem to suit her range.

absorbed carol channing's powers & psyche (morrisp), Friday, 6 April 2018 19:54 (eight years ago)

(NB - I can't sing or write songs for @#$%.)

absorbed carol channing's powers & psyche (morrisp), Friday, 6 April 2018 19:55 (eight years ago)

The pre-chorus of "Love Is a Wild Thing" really illustrates what I'm talking about, btw.

absorbed carol channing's powers & psyche (morrisp), Friday, 6 April 2018 19:59 (eight years ago)

i can't even wrap my mind around negative reax to this record

alpine static, Saturday, 7 April 2018 00:06 (eight years ago)

this album is really great!

jaymc, Saturday, 7 April 2018 05:06 (eight years ago)

wow the lyric video for "high horse" is like vaporwave.

jaymc, Saturday, 7 April 2018 05:09 (eight years ago)

at first, i did think the "high horse" chorus melody felt stilted or forced somehow, but then i grew to love it. maybe in part because of the awkwardness?

jaymc, Saturday, 7 April 2018 05:13 (eight years ago)

on my 3rd listen of the day, stunning album

niels, Sunday, 8 April 2018 14:36 (eight years ago)

"mother" is such a weird little composition. its brevity catches me off guard every time.

dyl, Monday, 9 April 2018 02:52 (eight years ago)

in tennessee the sun's going down / but in beijing they're heading out to work

Mordy, Monday, 9 April 2018 21:35 (eight years ago)

That's the line that reminded me of Neil Young

The Desus & Mero Chain (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 10 April 2018 01:24 (eight years ago)

our reactions to 'slow burn':

me: 'this has a really stunning arrangement but i wish it changed up the basic bliss-out chord-sequence a bit more, we've heard it a zillion times'

tt: 'why not hear it another?'

it does modulate the third chord of the sequence nicely i guess

imago, Tuesday, 10 April 2018 09:33 (eight years ago)

Oh come on that chord change in Slow Burn is amazing and completely elevates the entire song, I could hear it again and again for much longer than the song lasts.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 10 April 2018 09:49 (eight years ago)

Fair enough.

Butterflies is really lovely too. More as we get it

imago, Tuesday, 10 April 2018 10:13 (eight years ago)

What I don't get is how Beck's Sea Change can get such a (wrongful) kicking in the recent poll of his albums, and yet this is widely lauded - they occupy a similar sonic space and vibe to me (this is more pop, and less orchestrated, obv)

I know this is one of my insane comparisons and Completely Rong etc but I can't shake it. It's a positive comparison at least!

Wonder Woman is another good song. High Horse less so

imago, Tuesday, 10 April 2018 10:28 (eight years ago)

Rainbow might be better if another high-profile female US popstar hadn't put out a piano ballad called, uh, Rainbow just a year ago, and it be quite a bit better than this. You played yourself Kacey!

That aside (and High Horse), this is a solid album with a couple of grand highlights

imago, Tuesday, 10 April 2018 10:38 (eight years ago)

'high-profile popstar' ok w/e

imago, Tuesday, 10 April 2018 10:40 (eight years ago)

"high profile," is that some sort of weed reference?

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 10 April 2018 11:39 (eight years ago)

clearly the word "the" is a weed reference, being one letter off from THC

aloha darkness my old friend (katherine), Tuesday, 10 April 2018 12:24 (eight years ago)

Profile. Pro ... filé. Like, filé as in gumbo, filé aka powdered LEAVES. Profile=pro-pot.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 10 April 2018 13:01 (eight years ago)

Oh come on that chord change in Slow Burn is amazing and completely elevates the entire song, I could hear it again and again for much longer than the song lasts.

I'm not sure I get what you guys talk about : the 3rd chord of the 4 chords sequence is the one you enjoy particularly ? I don't really see what's special about it.

AlXTC from Paris, Monday, 16 April 2018 13:39 (eight years ago)

I think "Velvet Elvis" is my favorite song on this album... the lyrics are basic, but I really like the groove.
