Haha, Josh, what frat guys from 1992 are you hanging out with that you’re encountering ppl tittering over the pot refs. in those songs?
Ha, I'm thinking of times I've seen Dylan and Petty live, and as soon as they started playing those songs it was suddenly like white cap frat o'clock in the crowd, like it was activating a bunch of sleeper cells.

the drums on this are tight alfred

― j., Tuesday, 3 April 2018 15:55 (eight years ago)
My wife was listening to this album a bit yesterday and the drums (and I guess bits of the album as a whole) reminded me of the way Aimee Mann albums sound.
― Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 3 April 2018 15:58 (eight years ago)
It’s true that when Dylan played my college, a girl jumped onstage during “Rainy Day Women” and danced around for a minute or so until she was ushered off...

Ah, yes, I'm denying great progressive leap of ... sounding like Paula Cole records

it's no fergie song from 2016 that sounds like a rejected fergie song from 2005

I think this album sounds really nice - kinda sleepy, but that fits my mood this morning.

popism means embracing the pop-adjacent music embraced by a bunch of nerds who stanned for art brut instead of the stuff actually marketed to america

the populist who knows who borbetomagus is has logged on

lol
― Whiney G. Weingarten, Tuesday, 3 April 2018 17:26 (eight years ago)
i saw the Borbetomagus documentary at Spectacle, a Brooklyn theater with 30 seats, so that's def a clean hit.
― Whiney G. Weingarten, Tuesday, 3 April 2018 17:30 (eight years ago)
I like High Horse as a single but the sound of it is too sweet and upbeat to work with those “fuck you” lyrics imho.agreed

honestly one of the most memorably and gloriously hellish live shows i've ever seen
― The Desus & Mero Chain (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 3 April 2018 17:39 (eight years ago)
"High Horse" is a miss for me -- the chorus melody feels forced, in particular.
― absorbed carol channing's powers & psyche (morrisp), Tuesday, 3 April 2018 17:39 (eight years ago)
Chorus melody rules, casual eye rolls are a great way to be disdainful, whole point is her cheerful mood remains undisturbed

xp it's just a wasted opportunity to me, great melody, production and delivery but the lyrics do nothing for it
'Cause everyone knows someone who kills the buzzEvery time they open up their mouth^^hardly lyrics imo
I think placeholder "let's go dancing" lyrics had been preferable
― niels, Tuesday, 3 April 2018 17:53 (eight years ago)
Feeling targeted by that lyric huh
― Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Tuesday, 3 April 2018 17:56 (eight years ago)
haha, nice
― niels, Tuesday, 3 April 2018 17:57 (eight years ago)
the lyrics are weird -- the song is thisclose to being a dog whistle (because "high horse" is usually associated with moralizing) but decides it wants to be "That Don't Impress Me Much" at the last minute
― aloha darkness my old friend (katherine), Tuesday, 3 April 2018 18:21 (eight years ago)
otm!
but That Don't Impress Me Much is funny
― niels, Tuesday, 3 April 2018 18:35 (eight years ago)
High Horse is great, obviously. I don’t know what’s wrong with you people.

it's a fine horse, sir, and i can see quite far when sitting on it.

― The Desus & Mero Chain (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 3 April 2018 19:13 (eight years ago)
Love Is a Wild Thing is the best track imo

milf money was a good song

what in god's name was good about milf money
― had (crüt), Wednesday, 4 April 2018 02:25 (eight years ago)
xp I'm not saying High Horse isn't a good song, I just feel like the lyrics are a wasted opportunity, spending all that chorus energy dismissing some vague and indistinct character when it could have been about Kacey/me/us
― niels, Wednesday, 4 April 2018 06:17 (eight years ago)
I like this a lot. Thought her debut was overrated so I didn't even bother with Pageant Material but clearly I need to go back and reassess.
"Butterflies" always puts Genesis's "That's All" in my head.
― evol j, Wednesday, 4 April 2018 16:28 (eight years ago)
*Shockingly* good this album.
― piscesx, Wednesday, 4 April 2018 23:55 (eight years ago)
why shockingly?
― morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 4 April 2018 23:58 (eight years ago)
bc of the tingles
― j., Thursday, 5 April 2018 00:08 (eight years ago)
i dunno i thought it'd be more country-ish or sumthin. more like the Dixie Chicks.
― piscesx, Thursday, 5 April 2018 01:02 (eight years ago)
dixie chicks? had you heard any of her music before this album?
― dyl, Thursday, 5 April 2018 02:12 (eight years ago)
no never, i just read she had been a country singer or something.
― piscesx, Thursday, 5 April 2018 02:56 (eight years ago)
i gave this a proper second listen
there's a cluster of three tracks that are just amazing
motherlove is a wild thingspace cowboy
happy & sad is potentially a great track as well, which would make that four great tracks back to back, but it might be a grower
i'm a sucker for piano tracks so rainbow is a very nice outro
also what's the problem with smoking weed? she seems/sounds chill and would be cool to hang with
best track has to be love is a wild thing, though -- those keys after the music stops (at 2:56) reminds me a lot of future islands for some reason
stylistically it is a lot more varied than her previous albums i want to say, as well
― F# A# (∞), Thursday, 5 April 2018 04:03 (eight years ago)
xpost pretty sure she's still a country singer
― President Keyes, Friday, 6 April 2018 14:02 (eight years ago)
xpost No problem with the weed smoke, it's just a little one note to me. All the "high" and "buzz" et al. puns just distract me a little.
And LOL at the song that references that Survivor ballad. Is that ... on purpose?
― Josh in Chicago, Friday, 6 April 2018 14:52 (eight years ago)
this is cool, but not quite as good as Little Big Town's comparable stuff
― Heez, Friday, 6 April 2018 17:52 (eight years ago)
I feel like she didn't write these songs for her own voice... she keeps reaching for high notes that don't seem to suit her range.
― absorbed carol channing's powers & psyche (morrisp), Friday, 6 April 2018 19:54 (eight years ago)
(NB - I can't sing or write songs for @#$%.)
― absorbed carol channing's powers & psyche (morrisp), Friday, 6 April 2018 19:55 (eight years ago)
The pre-chorus of "Love Is a Wild Thing" really illustrates what I'm talking about, btw.
― absorbed carol channing's powers & psyche (morrisp), Friday, 6 April 2018 19:59 (eight years ago)
i can't even wrap my mind around negative reax to this record
