i got vini reilly yesterday. different from the others i had. lots of voice samples vini plays guitar over. and a flamenco influence. altogether it sounds pretty world-ish to my ears. i like it. less than lc but still. a grower.

the reissues on factory once/london are grate. hilarious liner notes by tony wilson, lots of excellent bonus tracks which are sometimes better than the original album tracks. nice covers and different colours for each cd inside and on the edge of the cd. they are quite expensive though. but i guess i will try to get all the others i haven't yet. next one on my list: another setting ( unfortunately obey the time seems to be sold out at the german amazon already). the few albums on vini's site are at 15 pounds. that's quite a rip-off, isn't it?

The reissues are usually around £7-9 here. Stocks of new ones are definitely starting to run out, but you can easily get them 2nd hand.

Well it was originally on FBN, rather than FAC. Also Crepuscule put out a CD of it in 1993. This probably means that it was left out when London took on the FAC catalogue.

Mind you some of the Amigos en Portugal (on that mad Portugese label) tracks are included on the Domo Arigato reiss, also FBN-only and Crepuscule compilation tracks and singles are included on many of the early ones, so I'm not sure what the real *reason* is, other than a typical Factoryesque muddle.

two weeks pass...

Somebody Elses Party, recent album, some great moments, but much of it ruined by some guy with laptop that produces quite a lot of it.

I'm actually listening to it for the first time right now and personally I think it sounds great -- one thing I've always enjoyed about the albums over time is how Reilly does play around with other sounds and styles while still sounding essentially himself. The more 'laptop' tracks actually make for a good blending to my ears.

Now, Tempis Fugit is the new album, correct? I've heard that as well, enjoyed it well enough.

Been listening to the 'Say What You Mean' mini-LP a lot recently. I really do think that this is the best DC. The Room, Silence & E.E are absolutely monumental.

Also I was talking bollocks on my previous post - the Amigos tracks are on the reissue of Another Setting, not Domo.

Duke - that is a very easy record to end up playing at 33 by mistake. I can't count the times I've done it now. It's a ritual habit at this point.

I've felt bad for years that I still haven't got it on CD yet though I have every other Durutti Column thing I could want on CD.

Someone wrote the title of the song in calligraphy on the inside white sleeve before I'd even bought it (used). It cost me like $4 at the time. I still have it, and play it pretty often, but that inside white sleeve is really falling apart now.

Well I can't say I have EVERYTHING Durutti Column I would want on CD - I can't claim to have a real copy of the Amigos Em Portugal LP on CD because there doesn't exist such a thing. But I do have the LP. Don't love it as much as the Say What You Mean record though.

According to Amazon UK it's now been deleted - there still appear to be several new copies up for grabs on Amazon Marketplace, mind. And the re-issue of Another Setting only has part of Amigos Em Portugal as bonus tracks, yes?

I got "Return of.." back in the day (not the sandpaper one tho), always loved it.

I got "LC" recently, wasn't that bothered.

the most recent album I've heard is "someone else's party" which I think is pretty good, with at least one track (the one that samples Jurado) being easily one of the best songs he's ever done. Is the new album different at all?

you need to listen to LC more. "Return of" preceded LC by a year. Do you have the Factory Too reissues with the bonus tracks? Track those down for the bonus tracks. If you like your repetitive jazz licks with techno, try on Obey the Time. Pick up Sporadic Recordings double disc for more experimental/unfinished cuts. The more you hear, the more you like.

Me thinks Keep Breathing is rather dull. Would fit right in with 'modern' ECM (gabarek/molvaer/(gawd beware) jarrett) releases. I think it gets all those positive reviews mainly because of 2004's Tempus Fugit seemed like some kind of a departure -- whom i found to be very much appealing, and that even though it traded, by some extend, complexity in for accessability. By that terms Keep Breathing continues that path, but focusses more on the safe bet, like say, the most likely target group (which seems to be into modern ECM releases by accident). But having said that, i rarely found anything post 1983 on ECM enjoyable. Now for the question: Could Durutti Column be considered as modern jazz?

Is 'Return of' different from LC?

Return Of... is completely instrumental, and is mostly guitar and drum machine, with a couple of tracks featuring live drums. It's quite short and sweet - only about half an hour (CD bonus tracks aside). I've never read an actual explanation of why Side 2 of the original LP was half the length of Side 1 - the label credits Guy Debord for inspiration, so I assumed it was some form of Situationist prank. Anyway, the CD is definitely worth owning even if only for the added bonus of "Lips That Would Kiss" and "Madeleine". There are few better arguments for bonus tracks than the re-issues of Return Of..., and, better yet, LC.

My friend is doing a DJ night in New York at this very moment, he does a night that is totally Manchester music. It's named Resurrection after the Stone Roses tune. He is spinning records right at this very moment. It's hard to believe.

I could talk for thousands and thousands of years about bands from Manchester exclusively, it is ridiculous. If that isn't the center of the musical universe I don't know what is.

the picture is indeed a screen grab from the factory vid. date for that show was 24 July 1981. the audio is from a different show on 13 October 1981. as far as i know this show was not ever released on CD.

at any rate, i'll be leaving it up there for a good amount of time. enjoy.

I recently heard the first two Durutti tracks ever from the Factory Sample record - Thin Ice and No Communication. I was shocked to find a male vocalist is on these, and it doesn't sound like either Vini or the guy who sings "Sleep Will Come". Does anyone know who this guy is out of curiosity? The online Factory discography didn't mention it. Another thing I don't understand is there is another Durutti Column discog online that is telling me there was actually a third track on that Factory Sample EP that the Factory discog doesn't list, entitled "Occaisional Labour In Culture". Arrgh. What gives?
