New song. New LP. Yessss.. I like them more when they do slowcore but that's fine too.

Letter published in Washington Post newspaper after recent big Snail Mail article
The April 22 Arts & Style article “Snail Mail is on the fast track” was about 18-year-old rock musician Lindsey Jordan. Ms. Jordan was being interviewed at her parents’ home, where she lives. The article said, “Lindsey Jordan is still sleeping off last night’s party somewhere when her interview with this newspaper is scheduled to begin.” When she finally arrives home, it is around noon, and she is wearing the same clothes she had had on for five days and nights. The reason she is late for the interview is that she drank a bunch of shots and got in to Baltimore super-late and crashed at a friend’s that night.
I guess the fact that she is some sort of rock star allows her to drink underage. Her parents should be concerned, but nothing in the article said that. All part of being a musician. Most of the article was about Ms. Jordan’s music. There was no need to include Ms. Jordan’s irresponsible lifestyle lest it encourage other young women to emulate her.

...“She’s definitely a perfectionist,” Brown said. “Not that she necessarily values what other people think a lot — [like] the label and the industry — but I think that did play into it. The experience of, ‘Oh, a lot of people are waiting for this.’ There’s a lot more weight on her shoulders.”
“Lush,” which will be released on June 8, was “really emotional,” she says, tougher than “Habit,” even with all the added benefits of working with a bigger label. (Jordan anticipates some backlash to Snail Mail’s slicker sound. “Everyone’s gonna be like, ‘Sellouts! Making this hi-fi Sony record.’ I never wanted to make a low-fi record. It’s so cool to be in a nice studio with a great producer.”)
By her own admission, Jordan is “so uptight in the studio, very controlling,” and despite the bucolic setting — on a farm in Upstate New York, all crackling campfire vibes — she was stressed out the whole time. There were arguments with her bandmates, songs were scrapped and restarted, and she and producer Jake Aron performed “open-heart surgery” on songs she had spent years writing.
The process was “really heartbreaking, even though I know we bettered” the music, she says. “I’ve never felt worse in my life.”

The new single is kinda meh imo
Sounds somewhat generic. Don' t really like the new direction
― nostormo, Thursday, 26 April 2018 18:18 (eight years ago)
another song that went in one ear and out the other for me. trying my best but seems like this just isn't my thing. it does sound generic to me, too.

Habit was excellent . Dissapointing.

guitars & brushed drums remind me of the second side of Insignificance by Jim O'Rourke. by far my favorite thing I've heard from her.
― flappy bird, Wednesday, 16 May 2018 16:22 (eight years ago)
It's nice but they will probably never create a great song like Static Buzz again.
“Everyone’s gonna be like, ‘Sellouts! Making this hi-fi Sony record.’
Exactly what she said
― nostormo, Wednesday, 16 May 2018 18:50 (eight years ago)
Idk about that, I don’t hear that much of a difference production or songwriting wise between these tracks and the Habit EP. I saw them last year & wasn’t into any of the songs but it was obvious that she was a great guitarist & singer & honestly this is the song I’ve been waiting for. She’s also only 18 - I can only imagine what she’ll be doing when she’s 25. The sky is the limit for her imo, especially after reading recent interviews & learning how much of a perfectionist/studio rat she is. Kinda bummed now that I skipped their club show here in March, that was definitely the last opportunity I had to see them in a ~450 cap room. But there was a big snowstorm that day and I didn’t feel like walking in that shit again lol.
― flappy bird, Wednesday, 16 May 2018 19:56 (eight years ago)
Congrats to whoever does this band's PR. They're everywhere. I think I've inadvertently come across more profiles/articles about Snail Mail than any other band who has released an album so far this year (just saw another one in NY Times that mostly reads like a label press release). Songs are OK, but don't really seem to justify the attention.
― triggercut, Thursday, 17 May 2018 13:33 (eight years ago)

― alpine static, Friday, 8 June 2018 06:10 (eight years ago)
You are right. She is a genius and everything she does (and will do) is perfect. No other opinion is allowed because we don't wanna hurt that innocent soul who chose to be in the public eye.
― nostormo, Friday, 8 June 2018 06:22 (eight years ago)
yes, that's exactly what I said
― alpine static, Friday, 8 June 2018 07:15 (eight years ago)
i mean, i'm sorry if you took that as a personal insult, nostormo, but the truth is i accurately represented what you said.
and i think it's a bummer to declare that she has already written and recorded her best song at age 18 based off a track or two from her new album...
if that's who you wanna be, tho, go for it.

I find it laughable that someone can say this is nothing special. Show me your work man.
― Slippage (Ross), Saturday, 9 June 2018 17:29 (eight years ago)
Apologies for my former posts. Rough week. This record is good and straight up indie rock which feels refreshing to me tho I wish she would rip a little more. When she does it’s great. Very melancholy record
― Slippage (Ross), Monday, 11 June 2018 04:48 (eight years ago)
I think this album is a good example of its kind of indie-rock -- but it's perhaps not ideal for listeners seeking strong/distinctive melodies, guitar lines, etc.
― i’m still stanning (morrisp), Monday, 11 June 2018 18:34 (eight years ago)
She’s a fantastic player but yeah the Barnett record is a little more hot lava, but anyways snail mail is an artist who has a bright future

Dunno I really dug the cranberries vibe of her ep and this is more of the same.
― Slippage (Ross), Monday, 11 June 2018 19:54 (eight years ago)
would that i heard the cranberries in this
― flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Monday, 11 June 2018 19:55 (eight years ago)
Mostly heard it in thinning from the ep
I get why people aren’t crazy about this but I’ve started really liking her vocal phrasing, mostly her voice is like a slacker Dinosaur Jr vibe and somewhat sad but idk
― Slippage (Ross), Monday, 11 June 2018 19:57 (eight years ago)
i Feel best coast is a fair comparison for a straight up indie record

― STOCK FIST-PUMPER BRAD (BradNelson), Sunday, 7 November 2021 15:28 (four years ago)
that's funny, I came here to say I've heard nothing but great things about the new album but that they're one of those bands I've avoided because of their name, like soccer mommy.
― Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 7 November 2021 17:31 (four years ago)

I think I need to see how this one grows for me, lyrically I love this, and her voice is even more wonderful here, but it's a little more laidback than I'd hope. I like her voice with more fuzz and guitars.

"Glory" rules my world today. It goes to places I've been close to before but had not reached yet. I cannot stop listening to it again and again though I fear I am going to wear it out if I continue. She reminds me a little of Conor Oberst. She must have been 16 when she did "Static Buzz", that is pretty stunning.

I'm late to the party but I'm absolutely loving Valentine.
I've gone back to LJ's earlier work and it's not doing as much for me. Lush has some great tunes but seems pretty patchy. Worth another few listens as it may be a slow burner. Habit benefits from some lovely guitar work but the whiny slowcore emo vibes aren't doing it for me.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I'm not sure "Tonight, Tonight" really works without Corgan's rasping nasal vocal.

Yeah it’s slightly downshifted from the original’s hypermelodrama, but it gains a certain half-remembered dreaminess instead, which suits the film.
― Ned Raggett, Thursday, 1 August 2024 01:38 (one year ago)
I feel like the vocal cord surgery has given her a younger, cleaner sounding voice, which is quite a change.

I like it. I wasn’t a fan of Valentine, sounded too much like a ‘difficult second album’, artist trying new things to see what fits. That didn’t click with me and that’s fine. This one has the promise of, and I hesitate to say this, an artist getting more comfortable in their own skin more in the form of returning to their roots. But that might be an analysis coloured by my own bias that ‘the first one was better’. Anyway, looking forward to hearing the whole thing.
