I've had this on repeat today, probably not the greatest recommendation - but I likes it!

ken hom ad attack (calzino), Wednesday, 28 March 2018 20:45 (eight years ago)

Trouble album is surprisingly solid all the way through. I usually find him the most forgettable part of most songs that he's on, but he's a charming presence and a good host on the new tape. crazy that he got a Drake feature.

this is a proven formula, still works for me:

The Desus & Mero Chain (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 2 April 2018 15:01 (eight years ago)

they call me melo gelo (Spottie), Monday, 2 April 2018 16:20 (eight years ago)

yeah i don't mind him but i thought he mighta stepped back a little bit more with 2 legends on the project

The Desus & Mero Chain (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 2 April 2018 17:14 (eight years ago)

is this the right thread to post about how i've been really digging the new rich homie quan

austinb, Tuesday, 3 April 2018 20:12 (eight years ago)

this is it

they call me melo gelo (Spottie), Tuesday, 3 April 2018 20:33 (eight years ago)

i love "changed" but haven't gotten around to the album yet

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 3 April 2018 20:33 (eight years ago)

i guess future released something last week? haven't seen much on it.

they call me melo gelo (Spottie), Tuesday, 3 April 2018 20:36 (eight years ago)

the quan is definitely a little marathon-length for me (in number of songs, not actual album length, which is under an hour), but it still feels like a great midpoint between the spastic psychedelia of thugger and future's angst. somehow that, plus the spacey production and his regretful gestures toward the past few years' career hiccups, ends up sounding like simple, basic humanity. gotta say, never thought quan would end up one of the most formalist, humanist rappers of the ones who came up in the mid-aughts

austinb, Tuesday, 3 April 2018 20:42 (eight years ago)

RHQ’s tape last year was really good too. didn’t see much talk about it

||||||||, Tuesday, 3 April 2018 21:10 (eight years ago)

i gave the quan a try, the marathon-ness was a little off-putting for me too, but I liked what I heard. it's crazy how much influence he's had over the ATL scene, everybody sounds like him now, from Lucci to Quavo, even Lil Durk's recent trap-ified stuff

stormzy daniels (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 3 April 2018 21:14 (eight years ago)

yeah, i think he's never gotten his due since he never put out a "classic" and his output was so all over the place when he was flooding the market with tapes, but looking at the time between Tha Tour Pt. 1 and now, his imprint on the scene is undeniable.

austinb, Tuesday, 3 April 2018 21:20 (eight years ago)

(i also think he's ended up more influential than thugger since his style is so much less auteurist)

austinb, Tuesday, 3 April 2018 21:25 (eight years ago)

that song by derez deshon "hardaway" that is pretty big for a MOR rap song is like a 1:1 rich homie rip off

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 3 April 2018 21:29 (eight years ago)

it's like the world collectively felt quan's absence and reached for a replacement w/o realizing that the original was still putting out music

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 3 April 2018 21:29 (eight years ago)

Hardaway is a better song though. Quan's instincts aren't as sharp as they used to be.

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Tuesday, 3 April 2018 21:31 (eight years ago)

maybe if you repeatedly promise that you will never stop goin in, but you go a year without releasing new music, it feels like longer

stormzy daniels (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 3 April 2018 21:33 (eight years ago)

it's ok. it feels kinda cheap to me. "changed" is much better to my ears but \(o_O)/

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 3 April 2018 21:36 (eight years ago)

yeah idk, Hardaway feels like it lives and dies by its hook. Even at his most inessential on the new album (which definitely does not include Changed), Quan's stuff always feels more lived-in

austinb, Tuesday, 3 April 2018 21:40 (eight years ago)

yeah, im not the hugest fan of Hardaway, the hook is fine but it falls apart in the verses. i definitely don't think it's as good as Changed or something like YFN Lucci's Heartless

stormzy daniels (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 3 April 2018 21:42 (eight years ago)

^^ or, speaking of Lucci, Everyday We Lit, which absolutely killed it with the quan vibe last year imo

austinb, Tuesday, 3 April 2018 21:44 (eight years ago)

yeah the Quan album sounds really flat and samey to me. Really screams for a "Flex" or a "Walk Thru" but there isn't a song of that caliber

Evan R, Tuesday, 3 April 2018 21:47 (eight years ago)

Quan's style of emotive singing is really effective when you're singing about something worth being emotional about, which I think is why "Hardaway" works. But ironically Quan himself is really indiscriminate about employing it. His voice will break like he's rapping about a fallen friend even when he's just like, rapping about routine finances

Evan R, Tuesday, 3 April 2018 21:49 (eight years ago)

Evan R otm x 2

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Tuesday, 3 April 2018 22:31 (eight years ago)

i think hardaway is closer to Lucci than Quan. It sounds an awful lot like "key to the streets" which was massive last year

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Tuesday, 3 April 2018 23:54 (eight years ago)

two years ago?

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Tuesday, 3 April 2018 23:54 (eight years ago)

It was still pretty big last year, at the very least. Wouldn't you say that Lucci is influenced by Quan though? Their styles of emoting are pretty similar, and Type of Way is the first song I can remember that did it like that (remember when Quan and Future were beefing because people thought he was biting Future at the time, though? lol!). His new album is a hundred times better than the new Quan is either way.

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Wednesday, 4 April 2018 07:08 (eight years ago)

Really enjoying the Cardi album. Interesting that the collabos with Kehlani and SZA are among the best tracks on the album. Why aren't there more collaborations like this between female artists - queen bee faceoffs excepted?

Somewhat surprisingly, the Lil Xan album also sounded good on a first skim.

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Friday, 6 April 2018 08:14 (eight years ago)

Holy shit there's a new Husalah album

stormzy daniels (voodoo chili), Friday, 6 April 2018 13:26 (eight years ago)

yeah and it's better than what i expected.

ANU (sisilafami), Friday, 6 April 2018 14:01 (eight years ago)

Yeah, I'm enjoying it a lot more than the e-40 & b-legit on the first listen.

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Friday, 6 April 2018 14:13 (eight years ago)

the e-40 & b-legit is boring, sadly.

ANU (sisilafami), Friday, 6 April 2018 15:48 (eight years ago)

I'm about 1/2 of the way through it and it sounds good to me, but im good with them just trading bars over sparse beats.

b legit 2nd verse on this >>
