from these three songs: album of the year

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Thursday, 22 March 2018 17:13 (six years ago) link

hahahahaha ... i knew she was slow playing the non-country stuff. this gives me great hope.

alpine static, Thursday, 22 March 2018 17:16 (six years ago) link

song sounds good but I don't think the lyrics go to well with the vibe

niels, Thursday, 22 March 2018 17:27 (six years ago) link

"High Horse" makes it two for three for me

Simon H., Thursday, 22 March 2018 17:42 (six years ago) link

OMG

Nourry, Thursday, 22 March 2018 17:53 (six years ago) link

omar little, Thursday, 22 March 2018 17:58 (six years ago) link

(3 for 3 imo!)

dyl, Thursday, 22 March 2018 18:16 (six years ago) link

That's like Phoenix doing country.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 22 March 2018 18:36 (six years ago) link

yeah the first few seconds sound like air france or something

J0rdan S., Thursday, 22 March 2018 18:40 (six years ago) link

lol otm

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Thursday, 22 March 2018 18:40 (six years ago) link

a bit 'Love at First Sight' too

omar little, Thursday, 22 March 2018 18:41 (six years ago) link

this song is def an outlier on the album in the sense that it's her doing something experimental in a very specific way. the album in general more or less sounds nothing like the other two but in ways that i think are more natural & organic. "high horse" does give an idea of how fun the production on the album is tho.

J0rdan S., Thursday, 22 March 2018 19:05 (six years ago) link

love at first sight was what i thought of too or daft punk...it gives me country futurism vibes through its use of country signifiers which is funny

awesome song

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Thursday, 22 March 2018 19:07 (six years ago) link

I meant through its use of RETRO signifiers. not country

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Thursday, 22 March 2018 19:08 (six years ago) link

its odd how certain retro signifiers convey 'futurism' in a country space, what i mean

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Thursday, 22 March 2018 19:13 (six years ago) link

This is kind of what I'm hoping Kylie's Golden will sound like?

Tim F, Thursday, 22 March 2018 22:12 (six years ago) link

this is so good

niels, Monday, 26 March 2018 11:45 (six years ago) link

there's an occasional clunky line but man this just sounds so good

Simon H., Monday, 26 March 2018 12:53 (six years ago) link

otm

niels, Monday, 26 March 2018 13:11 (six years ago) link

definitely get J0rdan's comment re. "high horse" after my first listen. phenomenal album still though.

ripersnifle, Monday, 26 March 2018 14:15 (six years ago) link

album is good but jesus if i have to see one more comment about "transcending country"

lowercase (eric), Monday, 26 March 2018 14:27 (six years ago) link

oh good i'm glad i don't read the internet

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Monday, 26 March 2018 14:29 (six years ago) link

I haven't seen much of that crap yet, to be honest, and NPR got Jewly Hight, one of our best writers about country.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 26 March 2018 14:30 (six years ago) link

or should I say "best writers" because she transcends country

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 26 March 2018 14:30 (six years ago) link

her writing on this album definitely made me check her other articles

niels, Monday, 26 March 2018 14:33 (six years ago) link

yeah, she's great!

ripersnifle, Monday, 26 March 2018 14:35 (six years ago) link

the sound of this record is so rich

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Monday, 26 March 2018 14:38 (six years ago) link

love the fleetwood mac groove and gleam on "lonely weekend"

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Monday, 26 March 2018 15:24 (six years ago) link

taking the moment to give Pageant Material another chance & it's much stronger than I remember. I get annoyed by the attempts to redo "Follow Your Arrow" ("Biscuits", "Family Is Family", to a less extent "Good Ol' Boys Club") but the rest of the album is outstanding.

droit au butt (Euler), Monday, 26 March 2018 16:39 (six years ago) link

i knew this album was gonna fuck my shit up when i heard the drum fill on “lonely weekend” for the first time

J0rdan S., Monday, 26 March 2018 17:00 (six years ago) link

there's an occasional clunky line but man this just /sounds/ so good

yeah there’s some obvious stunners on here — slow burn, lonely weekend, oh what a world, space cowboy, wonder woman, rainbow for me — but i think what makes the album is that even on the songs where the lyrics or concept drag a bit (happy & sad and golden hour i think) the melodies and production are so richly textured that there’s still a lot to grab onto, and then eventually you kinda warm up to the songwriting the more you sit with the album

J0rdan S., Monday, 26 March 2018 17:03 (six years ago) link

I know I'll warm up to it sometime this week.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 26 March 2018 17:06 (six years ago) link

kinda interesting to imagine how thos would've been received if this was the follow up to "STDP" instead of "PM"

ripersnifle, Monday, 26 March 2018 18:11 (six years ago) link

also been noticing a general trend of people having kinda "slept on" or overlooked "PM" upon release and only giving it a fair listen now, interestingly.

feel like - from a Building a Career Arc Narrative pov - it was a bit of a wrong move to follow up "STDP" with it. that said, i am one of the late comers to appreciating it, so i am clearly biased.

ripersnifle, Monday, 26 March 2018 18:16 (six years ago) link

i always felt the 'PM' was way underappreciated. it's almost as good as 'STDP'.

Nourry, Monday, 26 March 2018 19:26 (six years ago) link

maybe i am just excited but i feel like this sounds pretty much perfect

alpine static, Monday, 26 March 2018 19:52 (six years ago) link

i don't normally post my writing on ilx but for fans of this record i think there's some good stuff in here about how it came together https://www.spin.com/featured/kacey-musgraves-golden-hour-march-2018-cover-story/

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 27 March 2018 21:55 (six years ago) link

lots of good stuff, thanks!

niels, Wednesday, 28 March 2018 09:27 (six years ago) link

can't wait to read that piece today, thanks j0rd

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Wednesday, 28 March 2018 13:05 (six years ago) link

it's excellent!

Simon H., Wednesday, 28 March 2018 13:11 (six years ago) link

it nails the oddness of shopping at any Walgreens that isn't your own.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 28 March 2018 13:17 (six years ago) link

I enjoyed that article also, thanks J0rd. Was "Grand Folks" a typo? A good one if so.

Tim, Wednesday, 28 March 2018 13:34 (six years ago) link

hahaha. yes... i'm gonna fix that, thanks

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 28 March 2018 13:45 (six years ago) link

i need to spend more time with this to fully process it but for now it's safe to say "slow burn" is one of the most hauntingly gorgeous songs i've heard in ages

dyl, Friday, 30 March 2018 05:27 (six years ago) link

Yeah, just saw her play that on Colbert and wow

albvivertine, Friday, 30 March 2018 11:28 (six years ago) link

oh this record is so painfully sweetly good, i don't know if i can stand to listen to it all year

j., Friday, 30 March 2018 19:50 (six years ago) link

has anyone written a piece comparing this to the new frankie cosmos
