One of the best drummers around, obviously. Feeling for the guy and wishing him a full recovery.

tfw you make a possibly ill-considered joke on Oneida's twitter about this and they finally hit 'like'

New Kid Millions record, released under Colpitts, is really good.

Previously, Oneida pushed further into abstract sounds, recording compositions that couldn’t have been more different than the hammering anthems of their past. They return with 'Success', their most guitar-centric, rock album in decades.

Digging all three songs out so far, "Rotten" dropped yesterday:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OJWl1XSNT1Q

Guessing there must be some long jams yet to be unleashed on the new one, 3 of the 7 songs have been released and they only total about 12 minutes.

"Paralyzed" is almost 11 minutes and there are two others at more than seven. The record is really on it, a total surprise for AOTY that no one will realize until all the ballots are in.

Just got my copy today, can't wait to dig in!

Sadly, just saw that Kid Millions got COVID and their remaining tour dates are canceled.

Spinning this again today, this really is great. Might even be my favorite since Rated O.

Looking forward to listening to it for the first time soon.

I wasn’t mad on the singles, but it all works much better in context. Digging this, though I do wonder if their 00’s output isn’t everything I’ll ever need from them.

war mice (hardcore dilettante), Thursday, 1 September 2022 05:14 (three years ago)

Sane for me. I am always glad they are doing stuff, and find things to enjoy alright about the more recent albums, but they don't work for me like the first run of albums with the original lineup (and the albums post-Papa C that were trio records).

Still loving the new one, it's so great.

Mildly annoyed by Secretly Canadian with their distribution, ordered the Steel Rod EP and Happy New Year from them back in August, the two main holes in my Oneida collection and hadn't had any luck stumbling across copies in the wild. Every time I check back in I get a response about the items being "delayed coming from the warehouse", which fine, but creeping up on three months for older catalog titles they insist they have in stock seems like a long time. Mostly just annoyed that since I placed the order I've, naturally, came across a copy of each that I didn't buy because they were supposedly on the way.

Anyway, venting over, back to Success!

This is the greatest band, just such a killer catalog through and through.

I wish they would just release an album called You’e Having A Laugh already.

These guys just continue to kill it, Expensive Air might even be better than Success. I was initially disappointed by how slight it is, at only 34 minutes, but they don't waste a second. I like how they're getting a little noisier again.

Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 1 August 2024 14:13 (one year ago)

Title track is amazing. It plays like a really tight EOTO

Western® with Bacon Flavor, Thursday, 1 August 2024 14:59 (one year ago)

yeah tbh i couldn't connect with Success at all, but this new one is hitting me better

na (NA), Thursday, 1 August 2024 15:00 (one year ago)

xp - yeah, it's kind of amazing to hear how they can nail the same vibe in three minutes.

Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 1 August 2024 15:08 (one year ago)

yes the new lp is fantastic, and just completely under the radar of most people + publications...

Hmmmmm (jamiesummerz), Thursday, 1 August 2024 18:41 (one year ago)

Yeah, I've been surprised by how quietly this has been received. Not even a Pitchfork review at this point.

I know I'm a massive fanboy, but honestly they've been putting out so many good records for so many years that they almost deserve a Yo La Tengo level of attention.

Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 1 August 2024 18:58 (one year ago)

One of the funniest rock concert memories was at one of their shows. Back in maybe 07-08 when they were playing the basement of the Middle East in Boston with Kinski. The local Latin dance night show had ended and a bunch of people congregated from that towards of the back half. These immaculately dressed people got completely into, bumping and grinding right up front while the O was ripping through “History’s Great Navigators.”

Western® with Bacon Flavor, Thursday, 1 August 2024 19:49 (one year ago)

i alluded to this at the very beginning of the thread, but i had a very funny concert experience seeing them in Richmond in the early 2000s. they had been advertised in the free weekly as being psychedelic and so these annoying old hippies showed up. during the opening act, they were doing hippie dances and smoking cigars (?!) and jumping on stage uninvited and playing harmonica, just really obnoxious. then oneida came on and immediately kicked into "each one teach one." at first the hippies were trying to dance along to it but after like 5-6 minutes one of them was laying in a booth clutching his head.

na (NA), Thursday, 1 August 2024 19:56 (one year ago)

haha that's amazing

Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 1 August 2024 20:16 (one year ago)

Maybe I’ll try this new one on for size.

(Success was the first album where they lost me.)

Marten Broadcloak, mild-mannered GOP congressman (Raymond Cummings), Thursday, 1 August 2024 21:00 (one year ago)

New albums much more like their 1st couple of albums and a welcome extension of that sound as they were the first albums I heard of theirs

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Thursday, 1 August 2024 21:11 (one year ago)

Yep, loving this. Haven’t really connected with any of their work since Rated O(!) but this rules.

It was on a accident (hardcore dilettante), Thursday, 1 August 2024 23:00 (one year ago)

i think they hit a real sweet spot with this one - bookend the album with the longer O-head tracks and put some quality tight material in-between. basically what i wish every yo la tengo was.

also, "romance" and the "positions" ep they did are fantastic. former probably suffers from sequencing but the latter is straight up for the people that want their "folk wisdom" and "wicked servant" O.

Western® with Bacon Flavor, Friday, 2 August 2024 05:27 (one year ago)

Just adding to the chorus here, love this one. Absolutely the best since Rated O.

Position Position, Friday, 2 August 2024 14:07 (one year ago)

I'm not as down as most of you guys on what came between, but spun this again today and it really is top tier Oneida.
