Arlen Roth - Hot Pickups (1980)

― Doctor Casino, Sunday, February 18, 2018 2:43 PM (two weeks ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

Definitely one of the most boring sub-categories of this type of album cover is anything that directly references the fact that you are playing an instrument. It's like "there is absolutely nothing transcendent about this record, it's just a demonstration of me playing"

Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Wednesday, 7 March 2018 15:22 (eight years ago)

they get even sadder with distance. i'm assuming that at some point arlen roth had some kind of reputation, maybe praised amongst guitar folk, written about in magazines, so an album that's just "hey here he is playing guitar" might be like "shit yeaaaah I gotta get that." those days are now long gone, i fear.

Doctor Casino, Wednesday, 7 March 2018 15:49 (eight years ago)

Oh man, this is really sad.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TGXrDFyRlfE
Priceless footage of Danny Gatton tribute concert. Arlen Roth and his late daughter, Gillian, performing Suzie Q mixed with Day Tripper. Gillie had just turned 12. Arlen lost Gillian and her mother in a car accident in 1998, when Gillian was just 14.

Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Wednesday, 7 March 2018 15:54 (eight years ago)

Downer, man :((((

Buff Jeckley (Tom D.), Wednesday, 7 March 2018 16:00 (eight years ago)

yeah, sorry to sad up the thread, but I felt bad for making fun of Arlen Roth after I read that. Plus he seems to play really nicely.

The Guess Who - Guess Who's Back.
A minor classic in the 'back-related puns' sub-genre of Horrible 70s Album Titles.

Cliff's had a few album titles that I would class as borderline Horrible 70s album titles like I've Got My Own Album To Do.

From the 90s but undeniably horrible, Simon should be ashamed of himself. Non-UK ILXors won't get it though.

I preferred his follow-up album, "I'll have a P please, Bob"

Lou Grant, the Iranian cinema of late '70s TV (stevie), Thursday, 5 April 2018 18:39 (eight years ago)

Is that from a game show along the lines of Wheel of Fortune in the US?

Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Thursday, 5 April 2018 19:25 (eight years ago)

I'll be shocked if there isn't a record called "I'd Like to Buy a Vowel"

Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Thursday, 5 April 2018 19:27 (eight years ago)

Like Wheel of Fortune for the nerdy and socially inadequate.

Incidentally, one of my dearest old friends got married this weekend. She walked out to "Be My Baby," and then her and the groom walked down the aisle to "I Can Feel The Fire," the legendary opening track to I've Got My Own Album To Do. It was a beautiful wedding.

Fuckin Gute Bürgerband ‎– Des Endlose Krampf Mit Dem Egoländers

I have no idea about that album title btw, but I do like the fact they're called the Fuckin Gute Bürgerband. Songs include 'Heisse Scheisse', 'Kill You' and 'Sauer Kraut'

i'm surprised to see your screwface at the door (NickB), Tuesday, 17 April 2018 13:49 (eight years ago)

The Endless Cramp* with the Egolanders
