where do US ilxors order Music From Memory vinyl? I bought the last few on Discogs, but shipping rates are getting ridiculous

Forced Exposure mailorder has v reasonable shipping and pretty much the whole catalog in stock.

Cannonley Adderall (InternationalWaters), Thursday, 1 March 2018 15:31 (eight years ago)

some kind soul has made a Spotify playlist of all this stuff, looking forward to diving in

sleeve, Thursday, 1 March 2018 15:57 (eight years ago)

There's a good trick with Spotify, you can actually search by label.

If you enter - label:"music from memory" - into the search bar, you should get all the results. Not sure why they don't improve functionality like this tbh.

MikoMcha, Thursday, 1 March 2018 16:14 (eight years ago)

^^^ such a wonderful thing

brimstead, Thursday, 1 March 2018 16:22 (eight years ago)

that Dazion EP is wonderful!

boxedjoy, Thursday, 1 March 2018 17:36 (eight years ago)

Gonna just drop a reference to this reissue comp here, fits into the Redlight Radio DJ set zone of Tako, Jamie Tiller or guys like Hunee over the past few years - not sure if it's the right thread for it, but anyway...

Gumba Fire: Bubblegum Soul & Synth Boogie In 1980s South Africa - seriously great, sorta MFM parallel.

MikoMcha, Sunday, 11 March 2018 08:40 (eight years ago)

yeah i bought gumba fire yesterday, great stuff indeed

i'm surprised to see your screwface at the door (NickB), Sunday, 11 March 2018 23:00 (eight years ago)

boxedjoy, alerted me to this, which is really good.

https://stroomtv.bandcamp.com/album/tropisch-verlangen

It's on Belgian label STROOM rather than MfM but it covers a lot of the same demographic.

Heavy Messages (jed_), Sunday, 11 March 2018 23:08 (eight years ago)

also this on STROOM:

the Redlight Radio DJ set zone of Tako, Jamie Tiller or guys like Hunee over the past few years

I call this stuff "Discogs wormhole material"

boxedjoy, Monday, 12 March 2018 08:14 (eight years ago)

That's a great wormhole.

MikoMcha, Monday, 12 March 2018 19:14 (eight years ago)

could use a rolling wormhole thread tbqhwy

i'm surprised to see your screwface at the door (NickB), Monday, 12 March 2018 19:54 (eight years ago)

There is a definite axis, isn't there? Stuff that maybe five years ago would have simply been "balearic" but now its too dark and un-pop to align easily. Music from Africa and South America and Asia that's technically reissues but feels new to the world, and stuff that feels like reissues but is actually contemporary. The kind of thing you feel constantly behind the curve on. Growing Bin, Listen To This, WRWTFWW, whoever. Its a broad realm but it feels niche in its remit, "rolling wormhole" might be the best description?

boxedjoy, Monday, 12 March 2018 20:51 (eight years ago)

its kind of post mutant sounds blog balearic?

chee shimizu
ondas
ziggy/stroom
basso/growing bin
maybe the antinote crew
redlight radio gang
visible cloaks/root strata
dream chimney
melody as truth
record culture magazine
etc

i'm surprised to see your screwface at the door (NickB), Monday, 12 March 2018 21:10 (eight years ago)

The Knew-age thread?

brimstead, Monday, 12 March 2018 22:10 (eight years ago)

Start at Bumrocks -> Lovefingers?

Not MfM but also in the same demographic - this reissued album of baroque Danish synthpop by Suzanne Menzel I've been enjoying this week. Some of it is a little eyebrow-raising but fans of weird 80s pop and Julia Holter should investigate

boxedjoy, Thursday, 15 March 2018 12:39 (eight years ago)

This Uneven Paths compilation is genuinely surprising. Maybe one of the most beautiful compilations of unknown-to-me music I've ever heard.

three weeks pass...

omg the Terekke album is so beautiful. very ambient, mostly just soft muted drifty synth pads but it's really excellent.

brimstead, Tuesday, 17 April 2018 01:57 (eight years ago)

Uneven Paths is ace, first thing I've bought on this label. Reminds me of the Antinote five year anniversary compilation from last year

paolo, Tuesday, 17 April 2018 09:55 (eight years ago)

Uneven Paths, yup terrific. I feel like I'm still absorbing it, but plays like one of the best DJ mixes from Redlight.

MikoMcha, Tuesday, 17 April 2018 11:03 (eight years ago)

Hunee's Hunchin' All Night is also out, and (perhaps?) also deserves a mention on this thread: https://rushhourmusic.bandcamp.com/album/hunee-hunchin-all-night - also great!

MikoMcha, Tuesday, 17 April 2018 11:04 (eight years ago)

^ thanks for reminding me about that, listening now and it’s sounding great

i'm surprised to see your screwface at the door (NickB), Tuesday, 17 April 2018 23:17 (eight years ago)

yes, thank you x

Heavy Messages (jed_), Tuesday, 17 April 2018 23:40 (eight years ago)

Heavy Messages (jed_), Tuesday, 17 April 2018 23:46 (eight years ago)

one month passes...

jed_ played "Stop It" to a dancefloor on Sunday and it sounded SO GOOD thank you jed_

I think it's my favourite single of the year and it's not even from this year

Heavy Messages (jed_), Tuesday, 5 June 2018 23:23 (eight years ago)

I could report that boxedjoy was stone-cold-sober when I played it but I'd be done for libel.

Super thrilled to announce that this Spring we will release the second volume of Outro Tempo! Following on from where the first volume left off, “Outro Tempo II: Electronic and Contemporary Music from Brazil, 1984-1996” takes another dive into the depths of the Brazilian underworld, exploring the rhythms that lurk beneath the Ipanema sunset. A year in the making and again compiled by @johngomezldn it will feature original artwork by @alicequaresma on a beautiful double LP format.

But we’re not done there… to quench your Outro Tempo thirst we are releasing an exclusive teaser EP with the never before heard cassette madness of São Paulo’s Bruhahá Babélico and Individual Industry’s ethereal electro pop on the flip! Check ‘Bruhahá II’ (1987) and be sure to head over to our YouTube for the full track!

Excellent news!

groovypanda, Tuesday, 5 February 2019 18:17 (seven years ago)

Now need to see an Uneven Paths Vol 2 (the more superior of the two collections in my opinion)

Thebunk, Tuesday, 5 February 2019 19:19 (seven years ago)

Uneven Paths is the shit.

Acting Crazy (Instrumental) (jed_), Tuesday, 5 February 2019 23:59 (seven years ago)

jamie tiller was on the NTS breakfast show recently and he talked about the new outro tempo, played some very nice brazilian stuff too

dogs, Wednesday, 6 February 2019 16:10 (seven years ago)

Yup that was a good show.
Further to the above, I preferred the Uneven Paths comp too but pretty much everything that label puts out is quality.

millmeister, Wednesday, 6 February 2019 16:19 (seven years ago)

The excellent Yu Su has an EP of ambient/Balearic tracks coming out soon on MFM sublabel Second Circle. Clips here - https://www.residentadvisor.net/reviews/23734

Also RA have made Stroom their label of the month, which I think would be of interest to readers of this thread - https://www.residentadvisor.net/features/3449

paolo, Tuesday, 30 April 2019 19:40 (seven years ago)

definitely, thanks paolo!

Acting Crazy (Instrumental) (jed_), Tuesday, 30 April 2019 21:13 (seven years ago)

Stroom doing amazing work!

Acting Crazy (Instrumental) (jed_), Tuesday, 30 April 2019 21:24 (seven years ago)

I've been relying on this store to help turn me on to a lot of this kind of stuff lately

https://commendnyc.com/

Evan, Tuesday, 30 April 2019 22:01 (seven years ago)

Are there any must buys in the Stroom catalogue? I've looked at their Bandcamp page but was unsure where to start.

millmeister, Wednesday, 1 May 2019 13:51 (seven years ago)

Well, Pablo's Eye is great!

Evan, Wednesday, 1 May 2019 13:57 (seven years ago)

Thanks for the Commend link, Evan. This stuff is a big area of interest for me too and it's not easy to stay on top of new releases.

doug watson, Wednesday, 1 May 2019 14:14 (seven years ago)

The Ingus Bauskenieks album is very good.

paolo, Wednesday, 1 May 2019 15:13 (seven years ago)

You're welcome! I recommend following them on instagram as they're generally pretty on top of it and are descriptive about what they're showcasing/what's new.

xp

Evan, Wednesday, 1 May 2019 15:17 (seven years ago)

i got the zoe sinatra/kyoto 12" and the strobe light network one, of their recent releases, and the new benjamin lew one sounds good too from what i've heard; keysha - stop it! is a classic

i find out about most of this type of stuff from instagram and NTS

dogs, Wednesday, 1 May 2019 15:20 (seven years ago)

Yup, seem to remember Charlie Bones playing some Stroom stuff before. Thanks for the recommendations.

millmeister, Wednesday, 1 May 2019 15:45 (seven years ago)

the guy who runs stroom (ziggy aka nosedrip) is a semi regular guest on bones' show, and he also has his own slot too:
https://www.nts.live/shows/nosedrip

Br. Des Shadows (NickB), Wednesday, 1 May 2019 15:56 (seven years ago)

Br. Des Shadows (NickB), Wednesday, 1 May 2019 15:59 (seven years ago)

The latest Suso Saiz LP on MfM is absolutely beautiful as well

Evan, Wednesday, 1 May 2019 16:00 (seven years ago)

the Anthony Calonico album is great, particularly the closing track which i must have listened to about about ten times today
