"i was a bleeding-heart liberal until somebody handed me a huge wad of money for being a completely fucking useless white guy"

His harmonica bandoliers probably should have been a tip-off

applebees should sue him for devaluing their brand by continuing to exist

though i guess he could get some sort of medal for his valuable work in fighting amyl nitrate abuse

Speaking of libertarians, a strangely high number of our old buddies from early-1990s MTV seem to be among that milieu: Kurt Loder, Kennedy, Krist Novoselic, Buzz Osborne. Apparently Loder gave Kennedy her first Ayn Rand book (barf).

Sam Weller, Friday, 23 February 2018 13:45 (six years ago) link

Smithereens guy also, as noted above

10 print "eatme" 20 goto 10 (Ye Mad Puffin), Friday, 23 February 2018 13:58 (six years ago) link

I knew about Krist Novoselic but I didn't know about Buzz Osborne. I guess I assumed because he did 2 albums with Jello Biafra that he would be left wing, but I just googled him and oh dear.

Colonel Poo, Friday, 23 February 2018 14:06 (six years ago) link

Oh and Billy Corgan, but probably already noted above.

Sam Weller, Friday, 23 February 2018 14:25 (six years ago) link

Jason Isbell has clearly stated that he's left.

sure. as are most Americana folks I assume. And there are former Country stars who no longer get airplay (Steve Earle, Rodney Crowell, Roseanne Cash) who make no secret of their lefty politics. But the only person calling Trump a fascist at the CMAs was Sturgill Simpson, who was busking in the hallway outside.

to be fair the comment was more of an anodyne "it might be good to have a woman in charge" sort of thing

it's probably surprising that more icons don't turn conservative, given that they are Rich White Ppl of a Certain Age

“We have a female prime minister here in the UK. I actually really like her and think she’s wonderful. I think it’s the best thing that’s happened to us in a long time. She’s a very intelligent woman but I don’t see much to fear. I will say it is great to have a woman in charge of the country. She’s very sensible and I think that’s a good thing at this point in time.”

And on Brexit:

I wonder how she feels about it now, in the context of Brexit. Bush is warm, funny and engaging – and diplomatic on the subject: “Change is such an important part of life. It’s such a different world from even five years ago. A lot of unexpected things have happened this year.”

Because the last time we had one in charge was such a delight.

2nd time lucky eh? :p

Strictly speaking TM isn't really in charge

smashong pumpgong (Noodle Vague), Friday, 23 February 2018 17:03 (six years ago) link

Krist Novoselic a libertarian? wha?

flappy bird, Friday, 23 February 2018 17:12 (six years ago) link

Buzz Osborne being a republican/libertarian is the least surprising thing ever

flappy bird, Friday, 23 February 2018 17:13 (six years ago) link

He kind of plays bass like a libertarian

xp

Moodles, Friday, 23 February 2018 17:13 (six years ago) link

I wonder what Kate thinks of women having to prove they have been raped so they can support their 3rd child, mind you it's classic "sensible" politics.

Libertarians don't need gov't intervention, they succeed or fail on their own terms.

As someone (NV?) said on here at the time, bush is a posh prog musician who lives in an English country mansion so rightward political leanings aren't exactly a shock

scotti pruitti (wins), Friday, 23 February 2018 17:19 (six years ago) link

The only unusual thing is her publicly owning it tbh

smashong pumpgong (Noodle Vague), Friday, 23 February 2018 17:24 (six years ago) link

absolutely shameless tories are still on the gulag list.

calzino, Friday, 23 February 2018 17:25 (six years ago) link

yea re: the thing about more famous musicians not being rightwingers... they probably just don't talk about it, or pay lip service the other side

flappy bird, Friday, 23 February 2018 17:26 (six years ago) link

hit me with some Novoselic info. thought he was super left

flappy bird, Friday, 23 February 2018 17:27 (six years ago) link

Goes into some detail on his wiki page. He seems to be all over the map, but recently voted for Gary Johnson, possibly because he's a libertarian, possibly because he likes weed.

The property, set in 17 acres, rests on a cliff edge in rolling countryside near East Portlemouth in South Devon.

In 2007 she installed CCTV cameras, but removed them just hours before a council was due to meet over complaints they overlooked beach-goers in the cove below.

She has also spent much of the past decade campaigning to close a footpath around the house. Her wish was granted after part of it fell into the sea during last year's landslip.

Nice footpath. Be a shame if

scotti pruitti (wins), Friday, 23 February 2018 17:38 (six years ago) link

Last time we had a thread about right-wing musicians Novoselic came up and people didn't want to believe it then either. But he has come out in support of Citizens United and calls himself an anarcho-capitalist, i.e. hardcore free-market libertarian

Colonel Poo, Friday, 23 February 2018 17:43 (six years ago) link

xpost Does Margo Price get played on Country radio, though? I'm not sure she's in danger of getting dropped from npr or wxpn for badmouthing Trump.

President Keyes, Friday, 23 February 2018 18:11 (six years ago) link

i saw novaselic speak at my college once. he was complaining about graffiti and people were booing him. it was funny.

brimstead, Friday, 23 February 2018 18:12 (six years ago) link

Thanks Katherine, wasn't aware

kolakube (Ross), Friday, 23 February 2018 18:19 (six years ago) link

xxp

uh i would wager sturgill had about one max two songs on the radio

both acts have been dropped from the radio and shunned from the nashville scene but probably had one or two tracks on the radio at one point in their careers

bald butte (∞), Friday, 23 February 2018 18:24 (six years ago) link

Until I see proof I'm going to keep believing that any Sturgill song that ended up on a mainstream Country radio playlist was put there by someone who was immediately terminated.

Not sure what we're arguing about here. Alt-Country artists, and artists who've been exiled from radio are free to be vocal about left sympathies in ways that Country stars are not.

President Keyes, Friday, 23 February 2018 18:34 (six years ago) link

Thanks Katherine, wasn't aware

She said more than that it might be good to have a woman as leader, though. She said she really likes May, that she's "wonderful" and "sensible".

wait a minute wtf am i thinking of someone else? i remember reading something written by either meg ryan or christie brinkley about how they "can't take john anywhere" because he rubs "snobby" celebrities the wrong way and that their "politics don't align"
hmm

flappy bird, Friday, 23 February 2018 18:48 (six years ago) link

I think that was a tabloid piece debunked by Brinkley herself
