yeah it is! it's real jazzy/kind of funky in places more often than there are true house moments like "Where's Jason's K" (albeit experimental house in that case)

kid mush, Wednesday, 2 July 2008 16:30 (seventeen years ago)

it's like a house fusion album

kid mush, Wednesday, 2 July 2008 16:32 (seventeen years ago)

i think it's kind of strange that it's gotten so little attention considering that it's the first of the new dfa things tog et a full-length out after Herc

kid mush, Wednesday, 2 July 2008 16:35 (seventeen years ago)

h&la are way more salable than syclops though. they may both be great records but a good part of promotion and capturing attention and creating hype is the artists willingness to deal with the media ... mf doesn't do that at all

jaime, Wednesday, 2 July 2008 19:32 (seventeen years ago)

I don't say this to be snarky, but I wonder if DFA's cred amongst "the kids" has been usurped to some degree by the rise of Ed Banger and their ilk. In comparison to all the "electro bangers" that the fluo masses love, DFA's music starts to seem, in comparison, much more "adult." (cf "All My Friends," of course.) Hercules' certainly isn't a record for the kids -- it's not immediate and garish in the prevailing style, and Syclops's music, while mental, is also difficult and understated in ways that I don't think are terribly popular in the new club culture. I could be wrong, and obviously I'm generalizing. But I do think indie dance culture has changed quite a bit since "Losing My Message" -- in my mind, not for the better -- in ways that don't favor DFA's market position amongst scenesters.

pshrbrn, Wednesday, 2 July 2008 19:37 (seventeen years ago)

"changed a bit" = "moving on to the next trendy thing" yes?

BATTAGS, Wednesday, 2 July 2008 19:39 (seventeen years ago)

losing my... message?

s1ocki, Wednesday, 2 July 2008 19:40 (seventeen years ago)

Message... lost.

Raw Patrick, Wednesday, 2 July 2008 19:43 (seventeen years ago)

what is the age range of "kids" exactly?

i think there's a constant turn around ... in 2001 i was the same age as alot of the kids who are coming up to me now and freaking out when i play "where's jason's k", and while those kids were weaned on ed banger and still like that stuff ... i find they are also very enthusiastic about h&la, 'happy house' and pretty much all the new stuff coming out on dfa

jaime, Wednesday, 2 July 2008 19:50 (seventeen years ago)

obviously i mean "kids" very loosely, and maybe what i'm saying is beyond obvious -- that culture keeps changing, new trends supplant old trends, yadayada. i guess i'm used to thinking of DFA as the Hipsters in Chief (said slightly tongue in cheek; i don't mean to belittle them, because their accomplishments go much deeper than that tag would suggest), but it's slowly dawning on me that there's a younger crop rotating in looking for more garish, immediate pleasures.

pshrbrn, Wednesday, 2 July 2008 20:39 (seventeen years ago)

The Ed Banger thing is almost over. Or so says Mr Oizo (on Ed Banger) and Jerry Bouthier (on Kitsune) and a bunch of others. We've been asking that question in the last couple of weeks and all the artists have been strangely pessimistic. I don't think it helped that Ed Rec III and Kitsune Maison 5 were both a little dull.

NEW DFA RELEASES - EXPECTED SOON

The Juan Maclean : The Simple Life - Inc. Marcus Worgull Remix

This is not a proper follow up single to Happy House but a lo-key teaser for the upcoming album and a limited pressing.

LCD Soundsystem : Big Ideas - Inc Babytalk Remix

t_g, Friday, 4 July 2008 14:35 (seventeen years ago)

There is some talk over at the DJ History forum that Theo Parrish is remixing some part of 45:33. This is beyond exciting for me.

man i hope it's that bit at the beginning that sounds like stand on the word. that would be so so awesome

t_g, Tuesday, 8 July 2008 07:51 (seventeen years ago)

Yes indeed t_g, that would be great. But honestly, I'm excited to hear what he did with any of it. Does anybody in the know have any idea when it's supposed to be released?

Is it just me or did the Rong Music 'Promo Only' compilation put that 'Notwave' one to shame?

psychgawsple, Monday, 27 October 2008 20:14 (seventeen years ago)

LOL "Death from Abroad"! I love it.

The Ungrateful Dead (Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You), Monday, 27 October 2008 20:39 (seventeen years ago)

Anyone heard the new Mock and Toof, Underwater? Very interesting. A proper song from them. The demo's on their MySpace but it doesn't prepare you for the full version.

Very earnest, confessional songwriter style - but over pretty disco stylings. Makes you wonder if they've got a whole album if this stuff in them?

Treblekicker, Monday, 27 October 2008 22:32 (seventeen years ago)

psychgawsple, you are not rong. but perhaps set of cheeky (and rare) disco edits provide faster cheaper thrills than regular ol' new artist comps? i mean, an edit of Gloria Taylor will knock the socks off of just about anything most days of the week.

beta blog, Tuesday, 28 October 2008 02:29 (seventeen years ago)

it has that fantastic rub n tug edit of chicago too, right? not many things are better than that.

Suggest Bang Permalink (haitch), Tuesday, 28 October 2008 02:41 (seventeen years ago)

Ha just want to point out that one of those tracks is a god forsaken Spoon cover. It seemed like they were going for far different aesthetics for each, and the Notwave one wasn't representative of what I have come to enjoy about the Rong label.

In other words, this crosspromotional thing DFA has been doing doesnt seem to be doing these labels much justice. The Supersoul comp suffered from farrr too much of the same, when if they'd have (I duno) commisioned a mix and just released the 12"s internationally I think the reception would have improved.

That being said, I think Kompakt pulled off that Walter Jones 12" rather well. And I like the 12"s on Death From Abroad too.

psychgawsple, Tuesday, 28 October 2008 03:26 (seventeen years ago)

Anyone heard the new Mock and Toof, Underwater?

i quite like the samples of this, it reminds me of the beta band (but i say that about everything)

jabba hands, Thursday, 30 October 2008 05:02 (seventeen years ago)

woah the demo version REALLY sounds like the beta band

jabba hands, Thursday, 30 October 2008 05:05 (seventeen years ago)

two weeks pass...

just came to post about that track except to say the opposite .... not into it AT ALL. the vocals ... ugh. and I like the beta band (and mock&toof)

can we s/d some of the other new 12"s, there are a bunch now:

runaway "brooklyn club jam" co-release w/ Rekids -- love it! piano-house like Still Going but with a dark boomy warehouse vibe instead of summer sunshine

has anyone heard ... yacht? panthers? new holy ghost?

dmr, Saturday, 15 November 2008 23:41 (seventeen years ago)

brennan green version of brooklyn club jam on the b side is pretty sweet too

dmr, Sunday, 16 November 2008 17:25 (seventeen years ago)

sweet!

psychgawsple, Friday, 21 November 2008 04:36 (seventeen years ago)

how could anyone resist with such an enticing title

thereminimum chips (electricsound), Friday, 21 November 2008 04:40 (seventeen years ago)

haha

there was a 'double fisted demo' 12" last year, on rong proper rather than the joint label. never bothered ordering it tho, it only had the one track!

fela cooties (haitch), Friday, 21 November 2008 05:10 (seventeen years ago)

this, like the yacht and panthers, are enjoyable but totally preaching to the choir

free blood more interesting but somehow i like it a bit less

thereminimum chips (electricsound), Friday, 21 November 2008 05:14 (seventeen years ago)

juan maclean, and the mock and toof mixes of holy ghost were best of the recent lot i think. the original mix of that juan track sounds like a toughened-up human league or something.

panthers was good, i have the permanent vacation pressing of it (it's the same mixes). still not heard yacht tho.

fela cooties (haitch), Friday, 21 November 2008 05:30 (seventeen years ago)

wonder when they'll get the black meteoric star stuff out there, i got high hopes for that.

fela cooties (haitch), Friday, 21 November 2008 05:35 (seventeen years ago)

woah ye, acid-house from gavin sans delia. sounds fun.

also wanted to say that i finally got around to the brennan green version of "brooklyn club jam" and it was more than worth the effort

psychgawsple, Friday, 21 November 2008 06:51 (seventeen years ago)

gavin russom has done a remix for ronan's fave tracksuit-sex-trancer, petar dundov, on this. sounds pretty frantic!

Really, really liking the new Woolfy single on Rong/DFA, "Oh Missy."

Telephone thing, Sunday, 15 February 2009 03:59 (seventeen years ago)

^totally agree. dig the cage & aviary single too

electrodribble sound of jim (electricsound), Sunday, 15 February 2009 04:09 (seventeen years ago)

'oh missy' is way way old btw

LOOK WHAT I BRING TO THE TABLA (deej), Sunday, 15 February 2009 15:50 (seventeen years ago)

'ruff bedroom mix' was on 2006's rong music comp

LOOK WHAT I BRING TO THE TABLA (deej), Sunday, 15 February 2009 15:50 (seventeen years ago)

but yeah its good

LOOK WHAT I BRING TO THE TABLA (deej), Sunday, 15 February 2009 15:50 (seventeen years ago)

The Cage & Aviary thing is awesome. Very Talking Heads-y. Has anyone heard the Capracara thing?

Shannon Whirry & the Bad Brains, Sunday, 15 February 2009 16:43 (seventeen years ago)

(incidentally, all the DFA stuff is on eMusic now, which is great)

Shannon Whirry & the Bad Brains, Sunday, 15 February 2009 16:43 (seventeen years ago)

really like the cage & aviary- it sounded instantly familiar because of it's inclusion on the aeroplane mix for cool in the pool.

really do not like "oh missy" though, tbh

all-seeing eye of horus (psychgawsple), Monday, 16 February 2009 02:59 (seventeen years ago)

xpost - Not all DFA stuff, just a handful of things, but some pretty good ones.

You just got HAPPENED (Hurting 2), Monday, 16 February 2009 03:07 (seventeen years ago)

(incidentally, all the DFA stuff is on eMusic now, which is great)

No. Only the DFA stuff that isn't somehow tied to major labels. Hercules & Love Affair's debut disc, for instance, isn't on eMusic.

(posts crossed in transit. hurting's right.)

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 16 February 2009 03:08 (seventeen years ago)

The only LCD Soundsystem, for example, is the Nike+ thing. Which I did download - a pretty good deal for about the amount it takes to feed a starving African child for a day.
