Nobody understands the impulse to write this off more than me; I was all set to play this once and forget. I half-suspect this was the album that made GOTT PUNCH say "fuck it" & nominate Pontiak. Even after the first track, an ok-to-middling ballad, I still figured this was some sort of throwaway anachronism. Then the second track came on, and by the time I made it to the fairly transporting echo-drenched gutar solo, I was won over. Featuring the drummer and guitarist from the old punk band UK Subs

- lunatii's elimino, basically a fake early katatonia record, beautifully, shatteringly depressing, it's all i wanted to listen to last year (https://lunatiiofficial.bandcamp.com/album/elimino-2017)
- the new godflesh, it's so cool and good and i can never stop thinking about it, it's like broadrick employing every style he's ever explored at once (https://godflesh1.bandcamp.com/album/post-self)
- paradise lost's medusa, obv, feels like after the shift in style in their last record they've really arrived on this one
- spectral voice, who are mentioned upthread, and who are one of the rare bands who really get the death/doom balance right, mesmerizing record

- fucking couch slut, my god
- king woman! stoner metal packed with hooks!

Closing track of Couch Slut is best doom of the year, and they're not a doom band

I was just listening to King Woman! Will have to re-check-out Couch Slut.

i didn't manage to listen to it until this year but the code orange album is so, so, so brutal

love the code orange record, pretty unique sound

if we were doing a tracks poll "Bleeding in the Blur" might top mine

they're so stylistically varied while remaining 100 percent punishing, what a great unique band

i also forgot to nominate the new blood command but for me it ended up feeling like kind of a step down from funeral beach. the title track was still one of the best things i heard all year

Going to compile the first draft of my ballot and then let's see if any of these campaigned-for offerings can creep onto my ballot...

Remembering how much I loved this Hell album. The vocals are insane! And the production really turns the blood.

I'm only voting for stuff I gave 7/10 or more to, which currently numbers at about 17 albums. I'm sure I'll be able to add to that later!
