fwiw im not the only one pushing against migos monomania here ppl have gotten absurd about it

Son said Migos > G-Unit terms of success. What success are we measuring here? G-Unit Records? G-Unit Films? G-Unit clothing? G-Unit video games? Please help me out.

lag∞n, Monday, 29 January 2018 22:17 (eight years ago)

bhad and bhabie (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 29 January 2018 22:19 (eight years ago)

sorry, rescreened it

bhad and bhabie (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 29 January 2018 22:19 (eight years ago)

i don't think deej is wrong for questioning the attention that ppl put into the migos who are competent and formulaic and such could easily leave one cold -- the problem is that they're objectively popular and so the answer is a tautology

J0rdan S., Monday, 29 January 2018 22:41 (eight years ago)

not sure if you guys have discussed this or not but iirc they are bigger than the beatles

gr8080, Monday, 29 January 2018 22:59 (eight years ago)

i have heard many times on twitter that they are bigger and also better than the beatles to i assume its prob true

lag∞n, Monday, 29 January 2018 23:03 (eight years ago)

jordan otm -- popular artist is given attention because they're popular

k3vin k., Monday, 29 January 2018 23:13 (eight years ago)

The thing about Culture is that it's 'formulaic' only insofar as it dugs into the very essence of it's genre and stays there. It's such a pure sonic distillation of what they do, triplets, quarter notes, slow beats, ad libs, without anything to disturb the magic. No personal pain as with Future, no outsized personality like Young Thug, not really any melodies, no distracting narratives, everything is just moment to moment clashes of sounds, differing intensities. Vince Staples claimed he was inspired by club music on Big Fish Theory, but to my mind it was Culture that made rap sound like dance music, all about movement. I freaking love that album. I think I've said it before, but to me it's forerunners are albums like Funcrusher Plus.

Frederik B, Monday, 29 January 2018 23:26 (eight years ago)

i love migos idc they have a strong sound, i dont know if competent and formulaic is any sort of current consensus on them but its kinda interesting contrasted to the opinion on them when they first came out which was technically deficient novelty act, smh cant get no respect

three months pass...

any more thoughts on Culture II? Still don't feel like I've scratched the surface properly. It sounds at once poppier but also less immediate to its predecessor. I like 'Made Men' quite a lot but a lot of the songs kind of drag a bit?

brand new universal harvester (dog latin), Friday, 4 May 2018 13:54 (eight years ago)

About half of the tracks are at least good to very good, but it all still feels like just a bunch of songs. There's no thought to it. Just another day on the job. Two weeks later they probably could have released an equally long and equally good album. Which tells you something about how nice they are even when they're on autopilot, I guess. But it's mostly frustrating.

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Friday, 4 May 2018 14:31 (eight years ago)

haven't revisited it in full, but i do return to some of the highlights. mostly "too much jewelry," "too playa," and "narcos."

808s & Deep States (voodoo chili), Friday, 4 May 2018 14:41 (eight years ago)

It's the 2K10's analog to Wu-Tang Forever, right?
For lots of reasons.

Culture II

mr.raffles, Saturday, 5 May 2018 02:24 (eight years ago)

what are the reasons

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Saturday, 5 May 2018 02:26 (eight years ago)

both doing/did well, but without the sense that they'll continue moving things forward commercially
long and sprawling albums, when compared to their breakthroughs
5 and a half minute less immediate than normal opening singles

a few parallels for sure?
Forever is certainly more highly regarded, but, that album took a minute to find its fans.

mr.raffles, Saturday, 5 May 2018 02:32 (eight years ago)

ok sure

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Saturday, 5 May 2018 02:35 (eight years ago)

forever is such a flawed masterpiece, like every song has a bad verse

lag∞n, Saturday, 5 May 2018 02:35 (eight years ago)

should we start a new poll “culture ii” vs. “wu tang forever” jk culture 2 would win

lag∞n, Saturday, 5 May 2018 02:37 (eight years ago)

heh

What ARE records like Forever and Culture II? Not really New Jersey's, but... close.

mr.raffles, Saturday, 5 May 2018 02:39 (eight years ago)

Supastars is actually pretty great, btw. It’s no t-shirt but it has grown on me.

And the verses on WTF were good iirc? The problem was that they didn’t quite come together as songs, and that there weren’t many real hits.

Culture II and Wu Tang Forever aren't New Jerseys they are Use Your Illusions, a thing I just made up

Wasn't comparing the quality of their work!

Comparing the cultural spot they find themselves in both heading into and out of the follow-up to their breakthrough.
