part of the appeal of "new rules" is how it encases a breathless chorus hook within an expected drop, we'll have to agree to disagree on "damp squib"

yeah matt otm. i get that it's trying to have the vocals be like the processed (are they processed? i can't tell) vocals in a drop, and they're not quite the focus there, but it doesn't work for me

there's been a kind of sameyness to the poll this year imo (obvs this only bothers me because it's not my kind of sameyness; if 5 dancehall tracks had placed I'd be psyched), but it is p cool that all three "afro"pop songs are from three different countries and in different languages

'Akanamali' didn't strike me at first but by the end I was completely on board. Very good choice, ILM.

the second half of that song is probably my favorite kendrick moment of all time. the aggressive/aggressively repetitive sample always reminds me a bit of chicago footwerk stylez
