This was my #1 which I felt a little strange about since I only heard it for the first time in, I think, November. But Samthing Soweto's vocals are absolutely the best thing I heard all year, and the production is perfect for it

i thought this song was gonna place somewhere in the fifties. this is so great

btw - and i'll mention this again when we get there - i have the top 177 tracks queued up to add to the playlist as soon as we hit #1, so there is much listening yet to be done.

Really not sure what's going to miss out here. I know Carly Rae Jepsen is popular on here, but there's barely any discussion about that song on her thread. Could SZA have suffered from major split voting? I hope Selena has made it. I can't see New Rules missing out.

A couple of years ago half the poll seemed to be Kendrick Grimes CRJ Future Sundfør. This year's is just so much more interesting.

i'm hoping that New Rules is missing because i like all the others much more

it's like the best pop song of the year and i'll think less of the list for it missing xp

didn't vote any Kendrick for tracks b/c whenever I put on "DNA" I had to listen to the rest of the album & so the album was so obviously album of the year / decade / whatever, a unity

but it's not like i helped it out, it's just kinda kicking it at the end of my ballot xp

either way, it looks suspiciously like the top four tracks are all by women

Kendrick videos are always great, but the ones from DAMN are just another level.

New Rules just doesn't do much for me, nothing really hooks me and i wish it had a real chorus idk

DNA's placement is obviously well deserved, beat switch is great

it has an extremely real chorus

The one two three bit is magnificent but the actual 'I got new rules' hook is a real damp squib after that.

"DNA" is his best pure single imo

Voted for Akanamali after it appeared on the campaigning thread, so thanks to whoever posted it. Gorgeous track

part of the appeal of "new rules" is how it encases a breathless chorus hook within an expected drop, we'll have to agree to disagree on "damp squib"

love to discuss a song that may not place at all at this point lol

yeah matt otm. i get that it's trying to have the vocals be like the processed (are they processed? i can't tell) vocals in a drop, and they're not quite the focus there, but it doesn't work for me

there's been a kind of sameyness to the poll this year imo (obvs this only bothers me because it's not my kind of sameyness; if 5 dancehall tracks had placed I'd be psyched), but it is p cool that all three "afro"pop songs are from three different countries and in different languages

lotta lurkers have drifted away imo

'Akanamali' didn't strike me at first but by the end I was completely on board. Very good choice, ILM.
