I called it. What a song! What an album! What a band!
― kitchen person, Thursday, 25 January 2018 15:29 (eight years ago)
I never expected to like a 90s throwback act so much but this is such a good song, on such a good record.
― Roz, Thursday, 25 January 2018 15:29 (eight years ago)
charly bliss >>>>>> speedy ortiz
we don't really have to do this
― Simon H., Thursday, 25 January 2018 15:29 (eight years ago)
oh i'd also figured this wasn't placing, nice to see it here. DQ is maybe my favourite from the album but they're so good at what they do.
― ufo, Thursday, 25 January 2018 15:30 (eight years ago)
When I sent my brother my albums list last week, he gave me responses to everything I'd voted for. My favourite one was what he said about the Charly Bliss album,
"why can't more indie bands do pop-rock like this instead of whatever it is The Horrors do"
― kitchen person, Thursday, 25 January 2018 15:33 (eight years ago)
xxp was responding to imago's assertion that charly bliss is "acceptable" in speedy's absence
― hoooyaaargh it's me satan (voodoo chili), Thursday, 25 January 2018 15:33 (eight years ago)
lol xp
― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 25 January 2018 15:33 (eight years ago)
Charly Bliss!! I assume this benefited from being the only track nominated, would've been happy voting for any of them.
― devvvine, Thursday, 25 January 2018 15:34 (eight years ago)
For another fun 90s throwback album from this year, I recommend Partner's "In Search of Lost Time", though I still prefer Charly Bliss.
― MarkoP, Thursday, 25 January 2018 15:35 (eight years ago)
Westermarck was the one for me, I lost interest in this album as the days got shorter and I'd never vote for an individual track off this but glad to see them place.
(xpost - the Partner album is better!)
― Matt DC, Thursday, 25 January 2018 15:35 (eight years ago)
ahh missed that, apologies vc
― Simon H., Thursday, 25 January 2018 15:35 (eight years ago)
yeah I think I prefer Westermarck too, but it's all fairly bracing stuff. i like it! no beef
― #TeamHailing (imago), Thursday, 25 January 2018 15:36 (eight years ago)
Even after umpteen thousand listens, I still haven't been able to zero in one person Eva's voice reminds me of. I was sure it was a dead ringer for someone else, but I've decided it's basically a hybrid of Kim Deal and Kay Hanley.
― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 25 January 2018 15:40 (eight years ago)
Always thought that the first few seconds of this album were the worst moment on it, in general they'd benefit from doing a bit more rhythmically but I suspect they've got an amazing follow-up in them.
― Matt DC, Thursday, 25 January 2018 15:41 (eight years ago)
Seeing Charly Bliss last year in The Hug and Pint, Glasgow was so much fun. They were genuinely enthralled at how well received they were (for being outside the US). Great album / tracks.
― call me by your name..or Finn (fionnland), Thursday, 25 January 2018 15:41 (eight years ago)
For me it's Renee Zellweger in Empire Records lol xposts
― Roz, Thursday, 25 January 2018 15:43 (eight years ago)
aw JF you did the arcade fire/sheeran before i was up and about to add to the playlistprobably for the best
― Chocolate-covered gummy bears? Not ruling those lil' guys out. (ulysses), Thursday, 25 January 2018 15:44 (eight years ago)
lol you might be on to something xp
― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 25 January 2018 15:44 (eight years ago)
Definitely sounds like Kay Hanley to me - which gives the whole record the feel of a lost Josie & The Pussycats second album.

FUCK I was sure they were only gonna show up on the album poll
great song, obviously
― Simon H., Thursday, 25 January 2018 15:45 (eight years ago)
dont' care much for the original, but the remix is great
― Chocolate-covered gummy bears? Not ruling those lil' guys out. (ulysses), Thursday, 25 January 2018 15:46 (eight years ago)
I hadn't accounted for The Avalon Emerson Boost
― Simon H., Thursday, 25 January 2018 15:47 (eight years ago)
Called it, very good to see it place
― ♫ very clever with maracas.jpg ♫ (Le Bateau Ivre), Thursday, 25 January 2018 15:47 (eight years ago)
yeah the original is probably the 4th or 5th best song on the album. pretty, but doesn't approach the heights of their best stuff, which "slomo," "star roving," etc. do
― hoooyaaargh it's me satan (voodoo chili), Thursday, 25 January 2018 15:48 (eight years ago)
This would have played at #33 even without the remix fwiw.
― Matt DC, Thursday, 25 January 2018 15:49 (eight years ago)
it's still a coldplay song with a nice bass drop :P
― #TeamHailing (imago), Thursday, 25 January 2018 15:49 (eight years ago)
I adore the outro of slomo with Rachel's vocals
― kolakube (Ross), Thursday, 25 January 2018 15:50 (eight years ago)
this was quite underwhelming as a single but worked much better in context of the album. love the remix. Don't Know Why and Slomo were the album highlights and are some of their best ever songs
― ufo, Thursday, 25 January 2018 15:50 (eight years ago)
haha high five imago
i don't know avalon emerson, is it underworld
― brimstead, Thursday, 25 January 2018 15:50 (eight years ago)
worked much better in context of the album
this is certainly true, loved the album and sugar for the pill slots in very nicely
― hoooyaaargh it's me satan (voodoo chili), Thursday, 25 January 2018 15:51 (eight years ago)
Even as a Slowdive fan, I feel like 13 is a little too hight for this. That middle 8th is something else, tho!
― daavid, Thursday, 25 January 2018 15:53 (eight years ago)
*high*
I hadn't heard the remix before and it's incredible
― Simon H., Thursday, 25 January 2018 15:56 (eight years ago)
The original version is one of my least favourite songs on the surprisingly great album. The remix is indeed really awesome.
― kitchen person, Thursday, 25 January 2018 15:58 (eight years ago)
Slowdive, huh? Weird.
― emil.y, Thursday, 25 January 2018 15:59 (eight years ago)
Think I voted for Star Roving over this. Haven't heard the remix but will seek out
― groovypanda, Thursday, 25 January 2018 15:59 (eight years ago)
I'm not particularly into that Kesha song but got weirdly emotional when it kicked up for the last third.
― emil.y, Thursday, 25 January 2018 16:00 (eight years ago)
Are these the first two guitar rock songs in the 77 btw? They might be!
― #TeamHailing (imago), Thursday, 25 January 2018 16:00 (eight years ago)
Does Algiers count?
― hoooyaaargh it's me satan (voodoo chili), Thursday, 25 January 2018 16:01 (eight years ago)
um REMIX hello, why aren't ppl talking about the remix artist
― brimstead, Thursday, 25 January 2018 16:01 (eight years ago)
there was alvvays and algiers
― ufo, Thursday, 25 January 2018 16:02 (eight years ago)
also, Wolf Alice
― hoooyaaargh it's me satan (voodoo chili), Thursday, 25 January 2018 16:02 (eight years ago)
i'm assuming the slowdive is a house remix?
― brimstead, Thursday, 25 January 2018 16:02 (eight years ago)
And whatever the hell Kevin Shields was doing on that Eno platter.
― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 25 January 2018 16:02 (eight years ago)
the remix is here
it is heaps better than the original imo and more alligned with where slowdive were going on pygmalion
― faust apes (NickB), Thursday, 25 January 2018 16:03 (eight years ago)
you can argue about whether Isbell or Nilufer Yanya are "rock" or if the St. Vincent song has "guitars"
― hoooyaaargh it's me satan (voodoo chili), Thursday, 25 January 2018 16:03 (eight years ago)
Hardly.
― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 25 January 2018 16:03 (eight years ago)
I quite like the remix! NickB is right I think
