If the K-pop thread has coalesced around a small number of songs then it makes sense they're well represented here. The afropop thread has hundreds of tracks on it and I'm sure a lot of them got one or two votes but there are relatively few rallying points this year - although I bet one or two are still to come here.

cor this avalan emerson remix is banging, much better than the original and the other AE track imo

the last section of grafts where it reverberates out into a tired evening sky always makes me feel better, what more could you ask for

ogmor, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:20 (six years ago) link

everyone should not listen to this, but listen to the dawn richard song of this title instead, which lorde basically nicks the idea of and makes 300x worse

#TeamHailing (imago), Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:21 (six years ago) link

sorta hope "green light" didn't outpace this though i know it did

one of the better tracks on the record still

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:23 (six years ago) link

Well, both songs are named after the most famous art gallery in the world, but that's about it.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:23 (six years ago) link

'grafts' is the first track that is totally new to me that i enjoyed, very pretty. 'adrift' remix is the avalon emerson that i voted for

guys, you can write and sing two excellent songs about losing your mind in The Louvre

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:24 (six years ago) link

everyone should not listen to anything imago ever says because he is an idiot with shitty opinions lol

JB, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:24 (six years ago) link

only an afropop lurker but there's a few i really hope make it and some that i'd be surprised if they didn't

this was one of the best Lorde tracks but I hope this doesn't mean there's going to be any more than Green Light still to come

ufo, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:25 (six years ago) link

track is all about the muffled bass in the chorus

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:25 (six years ago) link

broadcast the boom boom boom

ufo, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:25 (six years ago) link

The Dawn song is sonically great but I've been able to take it entirely seriously due to the very solemn and reverant way she sings "your wonderful parts", which is supreme deadpan if nothign else.

I approve of the Lorde album even if I don't really care about 2/3 of it, but the "who cares, still the Louvre" line won me over first time I heard it.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:25 (six years ago) link

and ofc "down the back, but who cares, still the louvre"

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:26 (six years ago) link

xp lol

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:26 (six years ago) link

her delivery on that is perfect yeah

ufo, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:26 (six years ago) link

both songs have a central lyrical conceit about hanging a person or people in the louvre! anyway w/e

#TeamHailing (imago), Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:26 (six years ago) link

"Homemade Dynamite" was my jam on this album.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:27 (six years ago) link

homemade dynamite is the best one. it's the only song i've heard that seems to draw its influence directly from 06 nelly furtado/timbaland

GRAFTS MADE IT

♫ very clever with maracas.jpg ♫ (Le Bateau Ivre), Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:30 (six years ago) link

xp i hear & like that but the song itself doesn't grab me much

ufo, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:30 (six years ago) link

tbc I like that so much kpop has shown. We've all read lots of eoy lists at this point, so getting a strong sample of stuff I don't encounter anywhere else is the ideal for this poll. That said, it feels like the poll has basically diverged from ILM itself at this point.

Akanamali should place. I figured "Mad Over You" would too, but not sure now. There were def an absurd number of afropop nominations (a problem I helped make).

If I had to guess I'd go with 'Akrakabo' and 'Leg Over' but who even knows at this stage.

In general I can only think of 12 or 13 tracks which will definitely place and that leaves room for a lot of curveballs.

My favourite thing about The Louvre is, "I overthink your p-punctuation use".

i don't think i've ever noticed this song's now incredibly obvious relationship with "say it right"

Akanamali should place.

Man I hope it does, that song rules

Into the KLC & Octo Octa, both new to me.

RV also prob the least 'normal' of the four groups in terms of sound.

Completely disagree with this, btw, what's your reasoning? I think my issue w/ RV and Twice may be that they come across a bit like sub-par J-pop (and I listen to a lot of J-pop so am more snarky about this stuff) whereas Blackpink are more like a top tier Western girl group.

emil.y, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:39 (six years ago) link

My #1! Amazing song.

BOOM.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:40 (six years ago) link

xp
I ended up putting it as my #1. I mildly regret that now, but I'm sure it will appear

maybe next lol

rob, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:40 (six years ago) link

yessss this rules so much, it's so great to begin with and then there's the sudden move into the sunny guitar!

kept stumbling on it throughout the year and it was so nice to rediscover it each time

ufo, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:41 (six years ago) link

sensory overload jam no. 1. i forgot to vote for it lol

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:41 (six years ago) link

this is my fav stretch of the poll

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:41 (six years ago) link

Just such a monster of a record. Two minutes into Akrakabo is the single greatest musical MOMENT of 2017, when a completely different song seems to emerge from the skin of the old one and just carries on galloping without missing a beat.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:41 (six years ago) link

holy shit, the switch-up!!!

Oh wow suddenly I want to listen to a Lorde song

the man from P.O.R.L.O.C.K. (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:45 (six years ago) link

xp to emil.y

i don't think RV or Twice sound particularly close to jpop generally (the kpop that does to me usually falls into innocent cute concept stuff though) & Red Flavor was even originally written for Little Mix. Blackpink are pretty distinctly kpop in their sound with the 3 songs stitched together thing

ufo, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:45 (six years ago) link

XP emil.y since their debut with Happiness Red Velvet have had a hyperactive signature sound that imo doesn't sound like any other k-pop, j-pop or western girl group, with a frantic sample use, borrowed bits of the schoolyard rhyme singing of f(x) and a jangly mash-up like production. That is, their 'Red' songs, the 'Velvet' ones can get safe and boring. I don't hear any j-pop there. You're right Blackpink are more like a western group but that's not a great compliment to me.

abcfsk, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:46 (six years ago) link

would love to hear any jpop recs though since i'm not that up on it

is serge beynaud generally this good

#TeamHailing (imago), Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:49 (six years ago) link

Not really, no. I threw a vote to the whole album, but Akrakabo towers over anything else he has done. But mind you, I also think it towers over anything else from 2017.

Frederik B, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:49 (six years ago) link

Somewhere there's a video of Didier Drogba dancing to another of his songs that's worth seeking out.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:50 (six years ago) link

the Mondo Grosso would slot really well onto the Katamari Damacy soundtrack
