Kara-Lis Coverdale is great - in addition to making ambient music and hanging out with Tim Hecker she's a church organist who occasionally plays rap instrumentals as people are filing in or out of the church.

Pretty sure I saw Grafts in at least a couple of album polls though.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 16:45 (eight years ago)

No Paramore yet. Wonder if they've suffered from vote splitting

groovypanda, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 16:45 (eight years ago)

Good job everyone for Grafts at the high position and for stirring things up.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Wednesday, 24 January 2018 16:46 (eight years ago)

they'll only get one track in but i expect it to place xp

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Wednesday, 24 January 2018 16:46 (eight years ago)

I would not have thought to vote for this but it's pretty cool!

re: Paramore, I voted for the album, but I can't imagine "Hard Times" not making it, at least

Simon H., Wednesday, 24 January 2018 16:47 (eight years ago)

the only other acts with potential for multiple tracks left are SZA and maybe Lorde?

ufo, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 16:48 (eight years ago)

that sounds about right

Simon H., Wednesday, 24 January 2018 16:49 (eight years ago)

I feel like this is so far the most bonkers ILX end of the year list so far. Like a playlist of these songs in this particular order would absolutely perplex anyone who isn't aware of the context.

daavid, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 16:50 (eight years ago)

I suspect the final stretch will be much less wild but I've been loving it so far

Simon H., Wednesday, 24 January 2018 16:50 (eight years ago)

grafts is cool, not sure why i didn't vote for it. guess i wasn't expecting it to be on the tracks side so i missed it

ciderpress, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 16:50 (eight years ago)

it's blackened cities all over again

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Wednesday, 24 January 2018 16:51 (eight years ago)

this is cool

marcos, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 16:53 (eight years ago)

The KLC track is making me really anxious. Especially those random tape hiss bits. Gotta stop.

daavid, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 16:53 (eight years ago)

i will say this is the year when i either hit peak ilx hivemind or y'all came around to my way of thinking.

grafts obviously improves a lot on half-decent speakers or headphones, there's quite a lot of detail for such a minimal sounding piece

faust apes (NickB), Wednesday, 24 January 2018 16:55 (eight years ago)

grafts is lovely so far, would be good to fall asleep to

the final stretch might be less wild but i still don't have any real idea what sort of order things will be in this year

ufo, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 16:55 (eight years ago)

just gonna leave this here

will be interesting to see how many of these end up in here "It Is Happening Again": Tim writes about songs from 2017

#TeamHailing (imago), Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:03 (eight years ago)

I'm liking this one.

daavid, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:03 (eight years ago)

xp lol, i was gonna say the Tim F 2017 thread has an incredibly high batting average

if i had to guess the only two that have a chance at placing are prob the slowdive remix (which would technically mean avalon emerson placed three times, so maybe that's too much/too unrealistic) and the carmen villain track

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:06 (eight years ago)

this is my favourite bobbins track so far

ufo, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:06 (eight years ago)

Slowdive could benefit from the combined original + remix rule

rob, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:07 (eight years ago)

what i was thinking

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:07 (eight years ago)

love the remix of this, but I *really* love (and voted for) the original

Dan S, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:07 (eight years ago)

slowdive will definitely place pretty highly imo

faust apes (NickB), Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:08 (eight years ago)

this is p good yeah

Idly wondering how different this list would have been if everyone had voted in November, ie before most of the end-of-year lists were published. There's a lot of here that generated virtually no discussion here but appeared prominently in several lists and accompanying playlists.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:09 (eight years ago)

The J Hus song is cool. Thanks for the introduction!

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:09 (eight years ago)

Like the album but my favorite track is "Fleeting Moments of Freedom (Wooo)."

Salt Lake City Motorcycle Accident Nerve Damage Lawyer (_Rudipherous_), Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:10 (eight years ago)

Get in there! Original is great but the remix is a great big driving monster and probably the best thing avalon emerson has done so far ( which sayin' somethin')

what I'm finding genuinely perplexing is the massive kpop showing when that rolling thread isn't really all that active/populated (with the possibly key difference that the last month is mostly "who should we vote for?" talk which I guess I should try for my own pet rolling threads). forapper as influential as Tim really

Grafts is pretty nice!

rob, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:10 (eight years ago)

there are kpop lurkers

ciderpress, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:12 (eight years ago)

it was a very very strong year for kpop & i think enough non-thread regulars heard things via TSJ and nominations as well

ufo, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:13 (eight years ago)

Wow wow wow @ "Grafts". I can't believe I never listened to Kara-Lis Coverdale before.

No purposes. Sounds. (Sund4r), Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:14 (eight years ago)

but the remix is a great big driving monster

Right. The LP version is cold and not really my thing, but the Avalon Emerson embellishment is sort of...cozy?

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:14 (eight years ago)

It's totally enveloping yeah

i know kore-eda (or something), Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:16 (eight years ago)

xp it's the coldness of the original, with that ominous bass, that make it great imo!

Dan S, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:17 (eight years ago)

I don't post all that much in the k-pop thread but I listen to k-pop all year long and talk about it elsewhere. I could've done a better job nominating some tunes this year though.

Massively on board with everything Avalon Emerson's doing

abcfsk, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:17 (eight years ago)

xp that said, they're both great, and I'm glad it placed

also loved and voted for Grafts, didn't expect it to show up

If the K-pop thread has coalesced around a small number of songs then it makes sense they're well represented here. The afropop thread has hundreds of tracks on it and I'm sure a lot of them got one or two votes but there are relatively few rallying points this year - although I bet one or two are still to come here.
