I like this
― Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Tuesday, 23 January 2018 16:36 (eight years ago)
I voted for New York btw
glutes was a MAJOR last chance find on the nominations list so thanks for that.
i was also another voter for "if we were vampires." track is very maudlin but it hits me where i live.

49 KAMASI WASHINGTON "Truth" [176 points, 7 votes] https://youtu.be/rtW1S5EbHgU
I'm still digesting The Epic (live show from that year was great); never even listened to this.
― No purposes. Sounds. (Sund4r), Tuesday, 23 January 2018 16:41 (eight years ago)
xp "it's knowing that this can't go on forever / likely one of us will have to spend some days alone / maybe we'll get forty years together / but one day I'll be gone / and one day you'll be gone" that run of lyrics, in the aftermath of my partner's father dying and seeing how her mother is coping with being a widower, really gets me where i live
― Chocolate-covered gummy bears? Not ruling those lil' guys out. (ulysses), Tuesday, 23 January 2018 16:42 (eight years ago)
one of my most-listened to tracks in 2017, voted for the album though
― gr8080, Tuesday, 23 January 2018 16:42 (eight years ago)
i think i overdosed on stuff that sounded like "glutes" in 2006
― karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Tuesday, 23 January 2018 16:47 (eight years ago)
Truth is great, and towers over the rest of the ep imo. Second of my votes.
― Frederik B, Tuesday, 23 January 2018 16:47 (eight years ago)
didn't vote for the album but "Truth" was my number three. Fred otm, "Truth" is an overture, mashing together all the best individual moments of the album into a towering, soulful statement. it's more epic than any of the individual tracks on The Epic.
― hoooyaaargh it's me satan (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 23 January 2018 16:50 (eight years ago)
as a longtime fan, it's been bugging me that I couldn't get into this St Vincent album and now I think I know why. There's a sort of arch egocentrism she's emanating on this record that wasn't there on previous albums. It's like the caricature of the reclusive playground nerd who, once she's realised that her quirkiness and smartness can be harnessed into something endearing, is now over-egging it, wearing dark glasses and smoking foreign cigarettes while dropping references about her cool life in the city to anyone who'll listen... The songs on this album force you to hear them from her personal point of view whether you want to or not, and it feels a bit like being cornered at a party by a cokehead who insists on telling you all about a bunch of people you've never met and have no interest in.
― Badgers (dog latin), Tuesday, 23 January 2018 16:56 (eight years ago)
that's how I respond to her other records!
― morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 23 January 2018 16:57 (eight years ago)
didn't really feel that Truth was any different from stuff on The Epic, a fine album that could easily have been filtered down into just 12 good songs
― Badgers (dog latin), Tuesday, 23 January 2018 16:57 (eight years ago)
You didn't like L'Rain at all, pomenitul? Only real reason I didn't give it a vote is that I only got to listen to the album more than a couple of times before I cast my ballot.― No purposes. Sounds. (Sund4r), Tuesday, January 23, 2018

Based on a cursory listen, I did like it better than most of the other picks but further listening is required so I'll be sure to check out the album as a whole.

Tinseltown is one of the good songs on one of the year's most disappointing records.

dig the marker-inspired video

― ufo, Tuesday, 23 January 2018 17:02 (eight years ago)
tune *really* reminds me of something else, can't think what. do like it though, that understated vocal suits it pretty well
― faust apes (NickB), Monday, 22 January 2018 15:45 (yesterday)
Re 'Nightwork' it does remind me of Whitney Houston's 'It's Not Right But It's OK' due to its very similar staccato melodic pattern.
― nashwan, Tuesday, 23 January 2018 17:03 (eight years ago)
Heh. I nominated this at the last minute but never voted for it.
― MarkoP, Tuesday, 23 January 2018 17:04 (eight years ago)
saw Destroyer live on Saturday and it was amazing, this song rules
― gr8080, Tuesday, 23 January 2018 17:04 (eight years ago)
mama "unmask me" is so good, wow. tbh maybe the only one today that has caught me

destroyer video should be a zine imo

oh glutes is really good

TS: "Glutes" vs. Bicep
― (the blues version in his Broadway show) (crüt), Tuesday, 23 January 2018 17:12 (eight years ago)
Glutes vs Glue.
(Judging by the list so far Bicep are definitely turning up at some point unless there's been mad vote splitting)
― Matt DC, Tuesday, 23 January 2018 17:13 (eight years ago)
I voted for the other Bicep track iirc. Sorry.
― emil.y, Tuesday, 23 January 2018 17:14 (eight years ago)
Way prefer Bicep to 'Glutes', though, if we're doing anatomical music comparisons. 'Glutes' is nice but it doesn't do anything to make itself stand out to me.
― emil.y, Tuesday, 23 January 2018 17:15 (eight years ago)
I ended voting for the other nominated destroyer track. This one very good too though. I think the album is great, though not up there with his best.
― silverfish, Tuesday, 23 January 2018 17:16 (eight years ago)
Feel like I need to do the obligatory *yawn* at Destroyer, but tbh I can't even be arsed to do that. ILM gonna ILM.
― emil.y, Tuesday, 23 January 2018 17:16 (eight years ago)
Ken Destroyer sure loves the 1980s!
― #TeamHailing (imago), Tuesday, 23 January 2018 17:17 (eight years ago)
ILM gonna ILM.
I came sooooo close to prefacing the post with that, but deleted it at the last moment. Thankful 4 U.
― Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 23 January 2018 17:18 (eight years ago)
"truth" is a fantastic piece of music
― marcos, Tuesday, 23 January 2018 17:18 (eight years ago)
glutes didn't really do a lot for me, but patrick baumel totally reminded me that i never did read that other jerome k jerome book
― faust apes (NickB), Tuesday, 23 January 2018 17:19 (eight years ago)
i love destroyer but nothing from him this year came close to making my ballots

wow 2 number ones, i should probably listen to this one
― hoooyaaargh it's me satan (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 23 January 2018 17:21 (eight years ago)
this was an ok miguel track but didn't really strike me as anything special
― ufo, Tuesday, 23 January 2018 17:21 (eight years ago)
I voted for it (but I'm not one of the number ones). It's grebt.
― Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 23 January 2018 17:22 (eight years ago)
my no. 1
― flamenco drop (BradNelson), Tuesday, 23 January 2018 17:22 (eight years ago)
It's basically half the tracks from the first Miguel album mashed into one new song.
― Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 23 January 2018 17:23 (eight years ago)
I loved Lost In Your Light so much when I first heard it that both artists' subsequent albums felt like a letdown, then promptly forgot to vote for it.
― Matt DC, Tuesday, 23 January 2018 17:23 (eight years ago)
Destroyer live last year made me appreciate the album a lot more. Love the track.
― call me by your name..or Finn (fionnland), Tuesday, 23 January 2018 17:28 (eight years ago)
I was the other number one vote for Lost In Your Light. There were a lot of really great song and video combinations in 2017, but this one was the most perfect. As Brad said on the Dua Lipa thread, "it totally embodies what it's like to listen to the song". Their voices blend together so beautifully. My favourite song of the year by quite a long way. It should have been as big as New Rules (which I'm sure is coming later).
