the oh whoa ohh in I Dare You doesn't count as a millenial whoop imo

Why? It sounds exactly like every other one.

really enjoying how much more meaningless "millennial whoop" is now and it was meaningless to begin with

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Tuesday, 23 January 2018 15:46 (eight years ago)

yes I was gonna say 'one of the Massive Attack collaborators'!!

#TeamHailing (imago), Tuesday, 23 January 2018 15:46 (eight years ago)

a split second "oh hooo" is a millennial whoop now

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Tuesday, 23 January 2018 15:47 (eight years ago)

As a label, it's meaningless. As a device, it torments me.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 23 January 2018 15:48 (eight years ago)

I really dig this Mama track btw. The video is great (I love hair shearing videos.)

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 23 January 2018 15:49 (eight years ago)

this was my no. 6 and is the first song on my ballot to place since "nightwork"

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Tuesday, 23 January 2018 15:50 (eight years ago)

I know people say this every year, but a few of the placing tracks having been *barely* mentioned on the borad makes me think we could stand to have a few more longshot threads on individual songs

rob, Tuesday, 23 January 2018 15:51 (eight years ago)

<1000 views on Youtube, I meant to say. got overexcited

#TeamHailing (imago), Tuesday, 23 January 2018 15:52 (eight years ago)

i also voted for the ashley beedle mix even though the original is also staggering

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Tuesday, 23 January 2018 15:52 (eight years ago)

I didn't vote so I suppose I shouldn't complain but aside from Kelela, Laurel Halo, Kedr Livanskiy and Charlotte Gainsbourg, thus far this list makes it seem like 2017 was an awful year for music.

pomenitul, Tuesday, 23 January 2018 15:53 (eight years ago)

Just not longshot threads about "Kill White Fragility" workshops. Otherwise they devolve into weird discussions on snare sounds and 311.

MarkoP, Tuesday, 23 January 2018 15:53 (eight years ago)

never heard of unmask me before but it's got a nice groove

ufo, Tuesday, 23 January 2018 15:56 (eight years ago)

I know my own tastes and how they vibe with the ilm pop at large, so it's almost always a fruitless endeavor for me. Also, it seems like I burn out on such songs and never return to the thread.

This worked.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 23 January 2018 16:00 (eight years ago)

Start the thread and stop worrying about whether or not anyone will respond. Plenty of old ILM threads had one or two responses and then snowballed.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 23 January 2018 16:00 (eight years ago)

only part of this i like is the second verse with the synths & strings

ufo, Tuesday, 23 January 2018 16:04 (eight years ago)

This works for me today for whatever reason. Has never been a highlight of the album for me, though.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 23 January 2018 16:06 (eight years ago)

i'm guessing "los ageless" will also place

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Tuesday, 23 January 2018 16:07 (eight years ago)

New York was a huge grower for me. It seemed too slight for a lead single. Now I'd probably put it just behind Slow Disco as my favourite on the album. I love her in sad mode (Prince Johnny and I Prefer Your Love were my favourites on the self titled).

kitchen person, Tuesday, 23 January 2018 16:10 (eight years ago)

Relieved it's not higher tbh, such a gloopy record.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 23 January 2018 16:12 (eight years ago)

hey JF, I was the #1 voter for Isbell, thrilled that it placed.

In a year with a deep bench but few absolute stunners, "If We Were Vampires" truly stood out for me, just a devastating ballad with lyrics that walk right up to the edge of corniness, but sound so good over that guitar line that it transcends the concept of "corniness" altogether. Like JF said, the central conceit is, "If we were immortals, relationships wouldn't mean anything," but Isbell takes it a step further and says, "so what?" Maybe it's death that makes life meaningful, but when you're with your soulmate, 40 years together, or 50 years or 100 years, is far too short. Beautiful, beautiful song.

hoooyaaargh it's me satan (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 23 January 2018 16:14 (eight years ago)

I didn't get the appeal of this latest St Vincent album at all

Simon H., Tuesday, 23 January 2018 16:16 (eight years ago)

hey JF, I was the #1 voter for Isbell, thrilled that it placed.

You, EZ and I accounted for 136 of its points, so go us!

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 23 January 2018 16:18 (eight years ago)

Oh wait, bad math. 146 of its points.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 23 January 2018 16:19 (eight years ago)

high five

hoooyaaargh it's me satan (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 23 January 2018 16:20 (eight years ago)

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Tuesday, 23 January 2018 16:22 (eight years ago)

Patrice Bäumel is a very handsome man.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 23 January 2018 16:23 (eight years ago)

so he is!

Heavy Messages (jed_), Tuesday, 23 January 2018 16:25 (eight years ago)

whose number 1 was it?

Heavy Messages (jed_), Tuesday, 23 January 2018 16:26 (eight years ago)

mine!

Dan S, Tuesday, 23 January 2018 16:26 (eight years ago)

this is lovely, blows up in a great way at the 4min mark

nxd, Tuesday, 23 January 2018 16:27 (eight years ago)

yeah, it keeps getting better as it goes along

Dan S, Tuesday, 23 January 2018 16:28 (eight years ago)

Glutes was the last song I cut from my ballot. Listening to it now and I'm not sure why I did.

kitchen person, Tuesday, 23 January 2018 16:29 (eight years ago)

My tracks ballot was mixed, and Glutes was in the unranked portion. Not sure how many points that means I gave it, but some.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 23 January 2018 16:31 (eight years ago)

I didn't vote so I suppose I shouldn't complain but aside from Kelela, Laurel Halo, Kedr Livanskiy and Charlotte Gainsbourg, thus far this list makes it seem like 2017 was an awful year for music.

You didn't like L'Rain at all, pomenitul? Only real reason I didn't give it a vote is that I only got to listen to the album more than a couple of times before I cast my ballot.

Simon H. OTM re St. Vincent album.

No purposes. Sounds. (Sund4r), Tuesday, 23 January 2018 16:34 (eight years ago)

"New York" was a late nomination for me, and I was surprised at the time that no one else had nominated it. So I'm definitely surprised that it made the list (I projected ahead of time that 2 songs I voted for would make it, and this wasn't one of them).

iCloudius (cryptosicko), Tuesday, 23 January 2018 16:34 (eight years ago)

I like this

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Tuesday, 23 January 2018 16:36 (eight years ago)

I voted for New York btw

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Tuesday, 23 January 2018 16:36 (eight years ago)

glutes was a MAJOR last chance find on the nominations list so thanks for that.

i was also another voter for "if we were vampires." track is very maudlin but it hits me where i live.

Chocolate-covered gummy bears? Not ruling those lil' guys out. (ulysses), Tuesday, 23 January 2018 16:39 (eight years ago)

All 4 Isbell voters now accounted for. :)

I'm still digesting The Epic (live show from that year was great); never even listened to this.

No purposes. Sounds. (Sund4r), Tuesday, 23 January 2018 16:41 (eight years ago)

xp "it's knowing that this can't go on forever / likely one of us will have to spend some days alone / maybe we'll get forty years together / but one day I'll be gone / and one day you'll be gone"
that run of lyrics, in the aftermath of my partner's father dying and seeing how her mother is coping with being a widower, really gets me where i live

Chocolate-covered gummy bears? Not ruling those lil' guys out. (ulysses), Tuesday, 23 January 2018 16:42 (eight years ago)

one of my most-listened to tracks in 2017, voted for the album though

gr8080, Tuesday, 23 January 2018 16:42 (eight years ago)

i think i overdosed on stuff that sounded like "glutes" in 2006

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Tuesday, 23 January 2018 16:47 (eight years ago)

Truth is great, and towers over the rest of the ep imo. Second of my votes.
