I really dig this Mama track btw. The video is great (I love hair shearing videos.)

this was my no. 6 and is the first song on my ballot to place since "nightwork"

I know people say this every year, but a few of the placing tracks having been *barely* mentioned on the borad makes me think we could stand to have a few more longshot threads on individual songs

I didn't vote so I suppose I shouldn't complain but aside from Kelela, Laurel Halo, Kedr Livanskiy and Charlotte Gainsbourg, thus far this list makes it seem like 2017 was an awful year for music.

Just not longshot threads about "Kill White Fragility" workshops. Otherwise they devolve into weird discussions on snare sounds and 311.

I know my own tastes and how they vibe with the ilm pop at large, so it's almost always a fruitless endeavor for me. Also, it seems like I burn out on such songs and never return to the thread.

Start the thread and stop worrying about whether or not anyone will respond. Plenty of old ILM threads had one or two responses and then snowballed.

This works for me today for whatever reason. Has never been a highlight of the album for me, though.

New York was a huge grower for me. It seemed too slight for a lead single. Now I'd probably put it just behind Slow Disco as my favourite on the album. I love her in sad mode (Prince Johnny and I Prefer Your Love were my favourites on the self titled).

Relieved it's not higher tbh, such a gloopy record.

In a year with a deep bench but few absolute stunners, "If We Were Vampires" truly stood out for me, just a devastating ballad with lyrics that walk right up to the edge of corniness, but sound so good over that guitar line that it transcends the concept of "corniness" altogether. Like JF said, the central conceit is, "If we were immortals, relationships wouldn't mean anything," but Isbell takes it a step further and says, "so what?" Maybe it's death that makes life meaningful, but when you're with your soulmate, 40 years together, or 50 years or 100 years, is far too short. Beautiful, beautiful song.

Glutes was the last song I cut from my ballot. Listening to it now and I'm not sure why I did.

My tracks ballot was mixed, and Glutes was in the unranked portion. Not sure how many points that means I gave it, but some.

You didn't like L'Rain at all, pomenitul? Only real reason I didn't give it a vote is that I only got to listen to the album more than a couple of times before I cast my ballot.

"New York" was a late nomination for me, and I was surprised at the time that no one else had nominated it. So I'm definitely surprised that it made the list (I projected ahead of time that 2 songs I voted for would make it, and this wasn't one of them).

that run of lyrics, in the aftermath of my partner's father dying and seeing how her mother is coping with being a widower, really gets me where i live

Truth is great, and towers over the rest of the ep imo. Second of my votes.
