Weirdly disappointed to learn that the boyfriend who shells out for expensive hypnotherapy, sings in an English accent and was in a band when PB was born is (supposedly) Ryan Adams.

i saw her live recently. it was a really good show!

i heard "smoke signals" on the radio and it was v good, gave some julien baker vibes. other songs havent really clicked for me immediately

mordy and i both have this as one of our top albums of the year, if not the album of the year

just wanted to give it some more publicity before people vote on their year end things

this album, or boygenius?

moreso than I did a year ago, I think Stranger In The Alps is a legit long-haul classic

and by that i just mean it still sounds so good and feels like it's getting better, even after what must be, idk, 60+ listens?

I also missed out on this last year and probably would've put it at the top of my list this year if I could. Love boygenius and their whole coming together but this album is.. some album.

i only heard it right at the end of last year when going through my backlog for eoy season but it instantly went to near the top of my list, an immediate classic to me. so many delightful moments - the "falling" bass on "smoke signals", the way the bridge goes into the final chorus on "motion sickness", that synth choir line near the end of "scott street", when the guitar comes in a minute into "georgia"

thinking about it now it's fairly similar in feeling to this year's kacey musgraves album - singer-songwriter with gorgeous arrangements and lots of beautiful ambience filling up the space

just to clarify what i was saying: i loved it a year ago, too. put it in the second half of my top 10, i believe.

but you know how a year or two or five later, some of the records in your top 10 kinda fade away and you don't reach for them as much, while a few come into focus as the ones you keep returning to? Alps is one of those for me, at least right now.

so is last year's Manchester Orchestra album.

I like Phoebe Bridgers a lot and really hate the Julien Baker I've heard which makes the Boygenius album effectively useless for me.

Hating Julien Baker seems.. cruel. But there are several Boygenius tracks that don't sound like Baker tracks.

Funeral kills me every time. It never doesn't make me tear up a little.

Yeah. She is just remarkably talented as a songwriter.

phoebe's presence in the boygenius stuff is wayyy heavier than julien's imo, outside of "stay down" there isn't really a typical julien baker moment on the ep

imo "motion sickness" is a perfect song, rest of stranger in the alps is pretty good

I just heard this song for the first time and I fucking hate the shit out of Ryan Adams, this is just amazing songwriting....

Ryan is great, but yes, that last line in particular is an all-time great dig xp

knowing that song is about ryan adams makes it 1) funnier, then 2) more upsetting

album is much better than i gave it credit for upthread but i've also been depressed

Three tracks (including the above) on Spotify. All lovely but True Blue stands out as a Dacus masterclass.

I like them all, "$20" best because I always like when Baker rocks out a little. Hope there's at least a bit more of that on the album.

She just did a tour of small clubs (Racoon Motel in Davenport, IA) announced last-minute by posting flyers near the venue. Phone free, as was that MSG show. Good way to work out new songs live without them leaking.

I'm not an arena tour guy, but the phone-free thing makes me more interested than I otherwise would be.

boygenius packed an 8,000-capacity place in my podunk town 4 hours from anywhere you'd call an actual city and probably could've done a second night. she's been away for a while and demand is pent up, i'd guess.

i always wonder, too, how small some arenas can get using curtains and whatnot.

It is a little odd that in my town she’s playing an arena much bigger than the one Meghan Trainor played—while she has half of MT’s monthly Spotify listeners.

She played a surprise gig in Savannah recently and it sold out immediately. A nice small place. There was a drunk blabbering and trying to talk to Phoebe throughout the set because Savannah is full of drunks.
