everyone who hears it gets there eventually.
― alpine static, Wednesday, 31 January 2018 17:53 (eight years ago)
Weirdly disappointed to learn that the boyfriend who shells out for expensive hypnotherapy, sings in an English accent and was in a band when PB was born is (supposedly) Ryan Adams.
― in twelve parts (lamonti), Tuesday, 6 March 2018 08:04 (eight years ago)
Motion sickness, damn
― after party for the apocalypse (Ross), Sunday, 15 April 2018 15:30 (eight years ago)
i saw her live recently. it was a really good show!
― dyl, Sunday, 15 April 2018 15:36 (eight years ago)
i heard "smoke signals" on the radio and it was v good, gave some julien baker vibes. other songs havent really clicked for me immediately
― 21st savagery fox (m bison), Sunday, 15 April 2018 16:12 (eight years ago)
mordy and i both have this as one of our top albums of the year, if not the album of the year
― Trϵϵship, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 00:41 (seven years ago)
just wanted to give it some more publicity before people vote on their year end things
― Trϵϵship, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 00:42 (seven years ago)
this album, or boygenius?
― austinb, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 00:57 (seven years ago)
alright i am hearing reports that this came out last year
― Trϵϵship, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 00:57 (seven years ago)
lol
― Trϵϵship, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 00:58 (seven years ago)
i learned about it this year at the same time as boygenius. the boygenius one is a favorite of mine as well.
Treeship what do you think of the new Girlpool
― flappy bird, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 04:57 (seven years ago)
this was one of the best albums of last year, glad that she's getting more exposure from all the boygenius excitement
― ufo, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 05:16 (seven years ago)
agreed ^
moreso than I did a year ago, I think Stranger In The Alps is a legit long-haul classic
― alpine static, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 07:31 (seven years ago)
and by that i just mean it still sounds so good and feels like it's getting better, even after what must be, idk, 60+ listens?
― alpine static, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 07:32 (seven years ago)
I also missed out on this last year and probably would've put it at the top of my list this year if I could. Love boygenius and their whole coming together but this album is.. some album.
― abcfsk, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 08:03 (seven years ago)
i only heard it right at the end of last year when going through my backlog for eoy season but it instantly went to near the top of my list, an immediate classic to me. so many delightful moments - the "falling" bass on "smoke signals", the way the bridge goes into the final chorus on "motion sickness", that synth choir line near the end of "scott street", when the guitar comes in a minute into "georgia"
thinking about it now it's fairly similar in feeling to this year's kacey musgraves album - singer-songwriter with gorgeous arrangements and lots of beautiful ambience filling up the space
― ufo, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 08:30 (seven years ago)
just to clarify what i was saying: i loved it a year ago, too. put it in the second half of my top 10, i believe.
but you know how a year or two or five later, some of the records in your top 10 kinda fade away and you don't reach for them as much, while a few come into focus as the ones you keep returning to? Alps is one of those for me, at least right now.
so is last year's Manchester Orchestra album.
― alpine static, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 08:44 (seven years ago)
I like Phoebe Bridgers a lot and really hate the Julien Baker I've heard which makes the Boygenius album effectively useless for me.
― Matt DC, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 10:27 (seven years ago)
Hating Julien Baker seems.. cruel. But there are several Boygenius tracks that don't sound like Baker tracks.
― abcfsk, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 11:50 (seven years ago)
Funeral kills me every time. It never doesn't make me tear up a little.
― husked, tonal wails (irrational), Tuesday, 4 December 2018 15:24 (seven years ago)
Yeah. She is just remarkably talented as a songwriter.

phoebe's presence in the boygenius stuff is wayyy heavier than julien's imo, outside of "stay down" there isn't really a typical julien baker moment on the ep
― jolene club remix (BradNelson), Tuesday, 4 December 2018 21:09 (seven years ago)
imo "motion sickness" is a perfect song, rest of stranger in the alps is pretty good
― jolene club remix (BradNelson), Tuesday, 4 December 2018 21:10 (seven years ago)
year of impact rule means i get to vote for this

I just heard this song for the first time and I fucking hate the shit out of Ryan Adams, this is just amazing songwriting....
some of these lines are ice cold, damn love it:
And why do you sing with an English accentI guess it's too late to change it now
You said when you met me you were boredAnd you, you were in a band when I was born
― Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 11 January 2019 19:12 (seven years ago)
this is my album of the year even tho it came out in 2017 and consequently i will not be voting for it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
― Mordy, Friday, 11 January 2019 19:15 (seven years ago)
Ryan is great, but yes, that last line in particular is an all-time great dig xp
― alpine static, Friday, 11 January 2019 19:16 (seven years ago)
knowing that song is about ryan adams makes it 1) funnier, then 2) more upsetting
― jolene club remix (BradNelson), Friday, 11 January 2019 19:28 (seven years ago)
album is much better than i gave it credit for upthread but i've also been depressed
― jolene club remix (BradNelson), Friday, 11 January 2019 19:30 (seven years ago)
it also keeps getting better, imo
― alpine static, Friday, 11 January 2019 19:32 (seven years ago)
the album is good but not necessarily good for you
― Mordy, Friday, 11 January 2019 19:32 (seven years ago)
Her voice really does carry this weight of sadness. Incredible singer and songwriter.
― Trϵϵship, Friday, 11 January 2019 19:42 (seven years ago)
why date Ryan Adams in the first place? I've liked his music off and on for 20+ years but at no point during that time did he ever seem like the kind of person you'd want to spend any time around.
― Evans on Hammond (evol j), Friday, 11 January 2019 20:33 (seven years ago)

Believe I was the only voter for "Funeral" last year in the songs poll. It was my #1. Still hits me like a ton of bricks every time.
― Indexed, Friday, 11 January 2019 20:39 (seven years ago)
why date Ryan Adams in the first place?
idk, why would ryan adams date someone twenty years younger than him
― jolene club remix (BradNelson), Friday, 11 January 2019 21:20 (seven years ago)
Ryan Adams being that kind of skeeve shouldn't be surprising... but it is.

co-sign the excellence of "Motion Sickness." a 2017 song that i kept randomly returning to in 2018.

That song is so good
― marcos smart (Spottie), Saturday, 12 January 2019 05:36 (seven years ago)
similarly this is a 2018 album for me albeit i did listen to it after they played a clip of funeral on the popcast and immediately thought it was stunning

Heard her on a Sirius XM radio show playing lots of melancholy rock ballads by Big Star and others and she was enthusing about Alex Chilton from Box Tops days to Big Star and solo

Three tracks (including the above) on Spotify. All lovely but True Blue stands out as a Dacus masterclass.
― Shard-borne Beatles with their drowsy hums (Chinaski), Wednesday, 18 January 2023 17:35 (three years ago)
I like them all, "$20" best because I always like when Baker rocks out a little. Hope there's at least a bit more of that on the album.
― a man often referred to in the news media as the Duke of Saxony (tipsy mothra), Wednesday, 18 January 2023 21:33 (three years ago)
I think there should be a boygenius thread, really. Any objections?

I absolutely love Phoebe Bridgers, but even as a huge Phoebe Bridgers fan, I would be very good with seeing about 65% fewer "artist X releases a new single featuring Phoebe Bridgers" headlines every month. Seems like they are hitting every few days right now.

Phoeturing Phoebe.
― Josh in Chicago, Friday, 12 May 2023 19:57 (three years ago)
The National one is fucking ridiculous: 'contains tincture of Bridgers'.
― Stars of the Lidl (Chinaski), Friday, 12 May 2023 19:59 (three years ago)
What prompted this was realizing that today's Pitchfork headline about a new song with Rob Moose was indeed not the same headline as the one from two days ago about a new song with Arlo Parks.
― Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 12 May 2023 20:27 (three years ago)
clearly a Bridgers too far
― jaymc, Friday, 12 May 2023 21:13 (three years ago)

― a man often referred to in the news media as the Duke of Saxony (tipsy mothra), Friday, 12 May 2023 22:46 (three years ago)
Also she obviously loves collaborating.
"Rob Moose" is killing me for some reason what a hilarious name

boygenius packed an 8,000-capacity place in my podunk town 4 hours from anywhere you'd call an actual city and probably could've done a second night. she's been away for a while and demand is pent up, i'd guess.
i always wonder, too, how small some arenas can get using curtains and whatnot.
― alpine static, Friday, 5 June 2026 22:49 (three days ago)
It is a little odd that in my town she’s playing an arena much bigger than the one Meghan Trainor played—while she has half of MT’s monthly Spotify listeners.
― The Quaker Gurvitz Army (President Keyes), Saturday, 6 June 2026 00:37 (two days ago)
She played a surprise gig in Savannah recently and it sold out immediately. A nice small place. There was a drunk blabbering and trying to talk to Phoebe throughout the set because Savannah is full of drunks.
