i just posted that track last week :D

(jaxon) ( .) ( .) (jaxon), Sunday, 17 May 2009 02:59 (seventeen years ago)

hah, I knew I saw it somewhere! But I think I saw the vid, did you post the youtube clip somewhere? Or is it just that balearic revival zeitgeist?

dan selzer, Sunday, 17 May 2009 05:04 (seventeen years ago)

i know the last thing we need is another thread with 'balearic' in the title but is there seriously no thread dedicated only to the older stuff? i'd love more recommendations, am always in search of vintage mixtapes, etc

i am the eye in the sky... (psychgawsple), Sunday, 17 May 2009 05:12 (seventeen years ago)

you can always start a thread called "this is the thread for the BALEARIC RETROSPECTIVE"

dan selzer, Sunday, 17 May 2009 06:13 (seventeen years ago)

just need to reiterate how amazing and evocative the meanderthals album is - def the best of the recent crop of balearic albums imo. 'lasaron highway' is just perfect

lex pretend, Sunday, 17 May 2009 08:55 (seventeen years ago)

I like this album too, it's on the more meditative side of this stuff, it reminds me a bit of Talk Talk which is obv a good thing.

zero learnt from nero (Neil S), Sunday, 17 May 2009 09:29 (seventeen years ago)

BTW for Spotify users, Cosmic Disco have put together a large playlist of cosmic/ balearic stuff:

zero learnt from nero (Neil S), Sunday, 17 May 2009 09:30 (seventeen years ago)

i've been wondering what track this is for some days. i heard in 2 or 3 mixes so it must be easy. it's got vocal that sounds like rufus wainwright, singing "and the sun got its blue" or something. anyone knows?

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Sunday, 17 May 2009 09:44 (seventeen years ago)

Supermayer "Lost In Tiergarten" remix of Tiergarten by Rufus?

the sound of mu (sic), Sunday, 17 May 2009 11:28 (seventeen years ago)

That Spotify playlist already doesn't work for me :(

Enormous Epic (Matt DC), Sunday, 17 May 2009 12:04 (seventeen years ago)

spotify:user:cosmicdisco:playlist:59MRyu1At7vp39Cw3WE7wD

Any better?

zero learnt from nero (Neil S), Sunday, 17 May 2009 12:44 (seventeen years ago)

Nope, it doesn't appear to exist.

playlist working for me

The Devil's Avocado (Gukbe), Sunday, 17 May 2009 12:53 (seventeen years ago)

Spotify playlists are annoyingly flaky.

zero learnt from nero (Neil S), Sunday, 17 May 2009 12:57 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, what the hell was I thinking. If it sounded like Rufus then hello, maybe it WAS Rufus.

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Sunday, 17 May 2009 14:06 (seventeen years ago)

xpost-- i guess there IS this thread for older balearic faves

i am the eye in the sky... (psychgawsple), Sunday, 17 May 2009 17:37 (seventeen years ago)

@ Ant

Have you got any good recommendations for download from that emusic site?

Bit late replying to this... But - related to this thread - try the stuff on BearFunk, Tirk, Smalltown Supersound and Permanant Vacation - the one down side of emusic is that its really hard to find and share stuff. You can search by label though, which helps. You can search for specific remixers and then hope that their names are in the track titles too - lots of idjut/lindstrom etc stuff on their.

The Max Essa Album on bearfunk might be a good place to start.

d/ling that Milky Disco mix, the first one was great and the Hatchback album is good too. Summer vibes!

zero learnt from nero (Neil S), Wednesday, 20 May 2009 19:43 (seventeen years ago)

That Milky Disco comp sounds like it could be great but eMusic not taking Maestro is bullshit.

Enormous Epic (Matt DC), Wednesday, 20 May 2009 21:14 (seventeen years ago)

anyone heard this? http://www.discogs.com/release/1777118

looks interesting.

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Friday, 22 May 2009 03:50 (seventeen years ago)

the schwarz remix was on his recent BIS mix, it's good, not rly balearic tho?

jesus is the man (jabba hands), Friday, 22 May 2009 05:13 (seventeen years ago)

listening to that milky disco comp for the first time and wtf version of "pissed and passed out" is that? totally sucks like 99% of the fun out of the "original tempo" version on the 12"- the drums sound muted, the build comes too quickly, it's 3 minutes shorter, there are added (misplaced, imo) synths, and no jodorowsky sample in sight.

maybe this version will grow on me but "pissed and passed out" was one of my favorite tracks last year and it's totally lame that when it finally gets released on a widely-distributed comp they use this neutered remix business

i am the eye in the sky... (psychgawsple), Friday, 22 May 2009 17:21 (seventeen years ago)

here's the superior version for those who don't have it

i am the eye in the sky... (psychgawsple), Saturday, 23 May 2009 02:09 (seventeen years ago)

Belatedly announcing that the Meanderthals record is amazing. Love the eerie end of the world synth sweeps they drape over everything. Kind of wish the backing music for A Mountain of One sounded more like this.

(jaxon) ( .) ( .) (jaxon), Saturday, 23 May 2009 21:12 (seventeen years ago)

God, I really need to be at this event - it looks like pretty much the most fun thing ever.

Enormous Epic (Matt DC), Sunday, 24 May 2009 10:18 (seventeen years ago)

That Peter Visti remix of Jenny Wilson is astonishing. I want more female vocalists in my nu-Balearic.

Enormous Epic (Matt DC), Sunday, 24 May 2009 12:02 (seventeen years ago)

yeah i am insanely jealous of anyone going to electric elephant

i am the eye in the sky... (psychgawsple), Sunday, 24 May 2009 19:08 (seventeen years ago)

tix to croatia aren't exactly cheap, tho

you are right about that Jenny Wilson!

Any one else heard the new Smith & Mudd album Le Suivant? I saw a news piece on it on Resident Advisor yesterday that it was coming out next month so preordered it from the Claremont 56 website and was surprised to find it waiting on my doormat this evening. Only listened to the first few tracks so far but really liking what I've heard. It doesn't seem a massive departure from their first LP but that's no bad thing in my book and certainly reminds me of the Meanderthals album

groovypanda, Thursday, 28 May 2009 20:44 (seventeen years ago)

lots of talk about the tiedye mix of dj kaos' "love the night away" on the DFA thread, but it really belongs here imo. if you haven't already heard it, check it out on disco horror- which i am now contributing to regularly!

also re: tiedye, a lot of you may also dig this edit of a popular swedish tune they recently did with rune lindbaek, which i found on the idib blog

psychgawsple, Friday, 29 May 2009 19:32 (seventeen years ago)

xpost - smith & mudd's new one is spectacular to be sure. already in my top 10 of 09...should be in the shops soonish, but you can do direct order if you can't wait.

mikebee (BATTAGS), Thursday, 4 June 2009 21:46 (seventeen years ago)

the david cassidy/donna summer mix that tim f bigged up somewhere - i think maybe one of his '08 threads - is basically ruling summer '09 for me. also the kommand edit of "washington" by lucio dalla has gotten lots of plays - you can listen to it (and other edits) here: http://www.myspace.com/kommanddj

listening to that dj kaos mix right now...this might be a grower? not sure i like the vocals that much

the grouse of the solitary faggot (donna rouge), Friday, 5 June 2009 00:12 (seventeen years ago)

the vocals make the song

k3vin k., Friday, 5 June 2009 05:22 (seventeen years ago)

test pressing has been posting some pretty damn amazing stuff in the past few months, including a rad island-records mix by paul williams and a couple ultrabalearic vintage cafe del mar tapes by jose padilla and phil mison.

nice to finally hear how the whole new age/ambient side of balearica fits into everything on these cafe del mar mixes, i just wish i could track down more (the only other one i can find is #27 is on the djhistory forums). in particular the phil mison tape stands out as being just mind-blowingly great imo

psychgawsple, Tuesday, 9 June 2009 09:31 (seventeen years ago)

2 more streaming mixes here i guess- http://www.h-track.com/cdm.php

psychgawsple, Tuesday, 9 June 2009 09:49 (seventeen years ago)

max would diggg on the padilla mix. so smooth, maybe a good morning after mix?

Assume this is the one you mean (can't be bothered to find the OG thread/post]

Very nice - one of those tunes just the right side of cheesy and better for it - a bit like the entire works of The Blue Nile ;)

psychgawsple, Wednesday, 10 June 2009 05:02 (seventeen years ago)

i found one fairly easily on s1sk if you wanna go that route

on the same just-the-right-side-of-cheesy, this is huge for me (not the longer 7-minute version i have but still very nice):
