all this youthless booty (Noodle Vague), Friday, 15 December 2017 20:47 (eight years ago)

Caretaker - this is just a bunch of thrift store record samples

otm, I've never understood the hype.

change display name (Jordan), Friday, 15 December 2017 20:48 (eight years ago)

Angel olsens new one gets seriously dire in the second half. Love her but hate to say it's a bummer record

In a slipshod style (Ross), Friday, 15 December 2017 20:53 (eight years ago)

i'll just get this out of the way: most of the 2017 music is bad

brimstead, Friday, 15 December 2017 20:58 (eight years ago)

Caretaker's not hyped though. It's got a steady following, but that's something else iirc.

Anyway I can't get enough of it.

♫ very clever with maracas.jpg ♫ (Le Bateau Ivre), Friday, 15 December 2017 20:59 (eight years ago)

no defences of albums itt imo

Cardi Acs (imago), Friday, 15 December 2017 21:01 (eight years ago)

I've said this elsewhere I'm sure but the Julien Baker love-in is an album late; the new one is flat and mostly a disappointment

Simon H., Friday, 15 December 2017 21:02 (eight years ago)

Where's the fun in that? xp

♫ very clever with maracas.jpg ♫ (Le Bateau Ivre), Friday, 15 December 2017 21:02 (eight years ago)

OK fine

but no holds barred. except like actual bigotry

Cardi Acs (imago), Friday, 15 December 2017 21:06 (eight years ago)

KING KRULE is kind of boring.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 15 December 2017 21:10 (eight years ago)

oh yeah I can't take his voice for a second

change display name (Jordan), Friday, 15 December 2017 21:11 (eight years ago)

Not as boring as The National though

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 15 December 2017 21:12 (eight years ago)

That Big Thief album is boring as well. A charisma vacuum.

The shard-borne beetle with his drowsy hums (Chinaski), Friday, 15 December 2017 21:14 (eight years ago)

:o you're dead to me

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 15 December 2017 21:15 (eight years ago)

I do like the Big Thief album a lot :(

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 15 December 2017 21:15 (eight years ago)

LCD Soundsystem should be banned on the basis of that atrocious album cover alone. The music stinks, is completely irrelevant up to the point of self-charicture, and seeing critics hailing this has-been baffles me.

♫ very clever with maracas.jpg ♫ (Le Bateau Ivre), Friday, 15 December 2017 21:15 (eight years ago)

*caricature

♫ very clever with maracas.jpg ♫ (Le Bateau Ivre), Friday, 15 December 2017 21:16 (eight years ago)

thoroughly agree with every dis so far btw*. sleeve ur emperor palpatine

*not heard the bjork or big thief yet

Cardi Acs (imago), Friday, 15 December 2017 21:16 (eight years ago)

Guided By Voices - the songs are twice as long and half as good (tbh I dunno how hyped this really was, but let's open the thread up to all contenders regardless of hype level/EOY standings)

sleeve, Friday, 15 December 2017 21:19 (eight years ago)

I tried listening to the War on Drugs album once and I had to check the album wasn't starting over at some point. Still can't remember any of the songs in there.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 15 December 2017 21:20 (eight years ago)

@Moka, same here. It's drab.

♫ very clever with maracas.jpg ♫ (Le Bateau Ivre), Friday, 15 December 2017 21:21 (eight years ago)

Lorde is the new Carly Rae Jepsen - "pop" music that non-professionals spit out after a single taste, but which critics will continue to ride for forever.

grawlix (unperson), Friday, 15 December 2017 21:22 (eight years ago)

Xp that is sort of the point with WoD - it's aural valium for the inhibited and the terminally nostalgic.

The shard-borne beetle with his drowsy hums (Chinaski), Friday, 15 December 2017 21:24 (eight years ago)

Me included.

The shard-borne beetle with his drowsy hums (Chinaski), Friday, 15 December 2017 21:24 (eight years ago)

Sounds like WoD do The Caretaker better than The Caretaker does!

Cardi Acs (imago), Friday, 15 December 2017 21:25 (eight years ago)

I can't really diss it because I don't hate it at all but Yaeji seems overrated as hell to me. There's just not much going on musically and lyrically... every song seems she runs out of ideas and she just resorts to repeating words in the same monotonic voice.

Again, I don't hate it but I don't see what's so special about it either or why she's making it into so many EOY best songs lists.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 15 December 2017 21:25 (eight years ago)

Ok I'm done taking those out of my chest... I think... those are the ones frustrating me about their roaring approval.

Well, those an Bodak Yellow heh

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 15 December 2017 21:27 (eight years ago)

i rate the yaeji EPs (2 isn't as good imo) but found it pretty easy to get burned out on her stuff. Not much replay value as there's not a whole lot of depth, ya

laurel halo album was a disappointment for me, way too esoteric and weird for weird sake

In a slipshod style (Ross), Friday, 15 December 2017 21:28 (eight years ago)

Xxp Kirby has a concept, though. Granduciel is walking in socks over cold coals.

The shard-borne beetle with his drowsy hums (Chinaski), Friday, 15 December 2017 21:30 (eight years ago)

I still don't really get what everyone liked so much about Black Beatles. I don't hate it, just does nothing much for me.

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Friday, 15 December 2017 21:31 (eight years ago)

I think this is the first Laurel Halo album I like mainly on the strength of Moontalk alone but yes... it's way too dependent on its own quirks and weirdness.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 15 December 2017 21:32 (eight years ago)

moontalk is an amazing song! yeah

In a slipshod style (Ross), Friday, 15 December 2017 21:33 (eight years ago)

moka check out the king felix stuff if you haven't heard it, "spring" by king felix and her halo album "king felix"

In a slipshod style (Ross), Friday, 15 December 2017 21:35 (eight years ago)

I did not know about that project. Listening to spring now and it sounds amazing! Thanks for the recommendation.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 15 December 2017 21:46 (eight years ago)

:) sweet

In a slipshod style (Ross), Friday, 15 December 2017 21:49 (eight years ago)

the Fever Ray album was really disappointing to me

ufo, Friday, 15 December 2017 22:41 (eight years ago)

why? show your work :)

sleeve, Friday, 15 December 2017 22:43 (eight years ago)

Sleaford Mods - this guy used to sound angry, now he just sounds bored (I do like most of the previous records)

sleeve, Saturday, 16 December 2017 01:09 (eight years ago)

Fever Ray was also so-so for me. I like the knife and the first fever ray album a lot, so I thought for sure this would be one of my favorite albums of the year but alas it ended being one of the most dissapointing ones for me. It’s just so hard to sit through... even harder than ‘shaking the habitual’ and that’s saying something.

I can get past the hamfisted lyrics (either way lyrics has never been her strong point), but the textures and production are sort of uninteresting too, the middle of the album is specially boring or annoying and contains some of her worst songs ever (“this country” really wtf is up with that).

I don’t know... I guess it’s just alright in small doses but I don’t want ‘just alright’ from her.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Saturday, 16 December 2017 08:33 (eight years ago)

Ok maybe the production isn’t uninteresting... but it’s too harsh and irritating more often than not. I get that maybe that was her intent with this particular album but I’m not a masochist, sorry.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Saturday, 16 December 2017 08:43 (eight years ago)

Yeah, my love for the first Fever Ray album is immense, this one is not bAd exactly, just very disappointing

Mince Pramthwart (James Morrison), Saturday, 16 December 2017 10:56 (eight years ago)

yeah I agree with all of that Moka

the production mostly feels like lesser retreads of Silent Shout and the Fever Ray s/t, and the songwriting lacks the memorable melodies. the lyrics are a step down too - Silent Shout especially could be quite evocative but they're more hamfisted here and the BDSM subject matter of some of it is completely uninteresting to me

ufo, Saturday, 16 December 2017 11:09 (eight years ago)

Sleaford Mods - this guy used to sound angry, now he just sounds bored (I do like most of the previous records)

heh this = lack of money > money

King Krule was the overrated hype of the year for me. Could barely get through that mess 3 times.

So I will probably dig his next record :P

Ludo, Saturday, 16 December 2017 19:04 (eight years ago)

Fever ray album is fucking great, just took time to grow on me. I mean it's not that different texturally from
The debut it's just more hyper kinetic arrangement wise. Give it some time, mustn't hurry

In a slipshod style (Ross), Saturday, 16 December 2017 19:21 (eight years ago)

Lyrics aren't her strong point?? When I grow up and seven would put that theory to the test, memorable imo

In a slipshod style (Ross), Saturday, 16 December 2017 19:22 (eight years ago)

heh this = lack of money > money

think dude had a pretty decent office job for a fair while before the band blew up so I'm not sure this is a big factor. latest album hasn't really landed for me like the previous ones though, could be a law of diminishing returns thing but I had (have) no issue with their complete lack of progression so idk

thirst trap your hare (DJ Mencap), Saturday, 16 December 2017 22:12 (eight years ago)

You’re right I take it back, heartbeats alone is one of the few sweet songs they have and it has some beautiful lines in there. The debut also has some stunning imagery... I’m just way too frustrated with this album.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Saturday, 16 December 2017 22:19 (eight years ago)

moka, all good bud :)

i found the album hard to parse for quite a while tbh

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 27 April 2026 17:48 (one month ago)

I tried listening to some live Goose a few years back, and I didn't go for it. I think I assessed that they were capable jammers, but didn't have strong songs. "No songs, no dice," has always been my motto when engaging with jambands.

otm

this is enough to be a good covers band but their original material seems very dull

ufo, Monday, 27 April 2026 22:14 (one month ago)

I was not hacked. Goose are fucking terrible, but I have a notoriously low tolerance for "jam" bands in that particular model/style. All the people that I know who follow them are rich kids living out of blinged out vans, stopping at crags around the country to do some climbing while following their favorite band. Sounds fun, too bad the music is fucking awful.

imago, Monday, 15 June 2026 16:40 (three days ago)

I was thinking of doing a dis of this record too, but I don't think I can be bothered. Really good songwriting, still bored out of my mind half the time.

Frederik B, Monday, 15 June 2026 17:05 (three days ago)

I wish the best young songwriters in the world didn't sound like they've never heard music newer than 1990 :(

I think there are enough people dissing Geese.

The Quaker Gurvitz Army (President Keyes), Monday, 15 June 2026 17:13 (three days ago)

I'm now listening to Inferno, wondering if I have the energy for this too. Burn it all down innit

imago, Monday, 15 June 2026 17:17 (three days ago)

so far (most of the way through) this is kind of like if you made Linkin Park's A Thousand Suns worse, took out all the vocals and then deleted the guitars too just to be sure

imago, Monday, 15 June 2026 17:34 (three days ago)

literally the only time i hear anything about goose is when people are like "can you believe there are different bands called geese and goose???"

na (NA), Monday, 15 June 2026 19:10 (three days ago)

kinda hilarious to be doing the whole witchsmeller routine about what's left of the professional critic circuit not being completely on board with disney's olivia rodrigo making a concept album about how she's into pop-rock slightly older than herself

imago, Monday, 15 June 2026 19:55 (three days ago)

i think boards of canada would do a pretty good job at scoring a video game or something like that but it's a real struggle to understand the level of excitement people have about the new one

imago, Tuesday, 16 June 2026 07:48 (two days ago)

I find this thread pretty reliably makes me like whatever hyped release is under discussion a little bit more (or hate it a little bit less) than I did.

Tim F, Tuesday, 16 June 2026 08:55 (two days ago)

Always happy to be of service

imago, Tuesday, 16 June 2026 08:56 (two days ago)

Expectations was the other Monkey-House-alike ftr. More of that sort of thing please Olivia. I wouldn't even begrudge you a We Used To Be Friends cover

imago, Tuesday, 16 June 2026 08:58 (two days ago)

Wasn’t having a go at you (for once?) imago - just thinking about how this thread’s premise and how it plays out tends to make me search harder for the good in the records being discussed.

It’s very hard to write well and genuinely about why a record doesn’t move you, including because people rarely are motivated to try (and fair enough really).

map was a bit unimpressed by my other thread a few months back about good/persuasive/memorable disses, but I think I started it because I rarely see them so the ones that make an impression stay with me.

Tim F, Tuesday, 16 June 2026 12:05 (two days ago)

Serfin' USA (sleeve), Tuesday, 16 June 2026 14:33 (two days ago)

Haha, fr. It's nice that something like AdP is having success, but it doesn't have much depth imo, or anything that makes me want to go back and listen to it again.

I've also never been able to connect with Boards of Canada, but I'm glad people like it.

xp

Jordan s/t (Jordan), Tuesday, 16 June 2026 14:34 (two days ago)

it's hard for me to imagine anyone coming fresh to the new boc album and being excited about it, it feels like the whole audience is people who were into old boc music and are nostalgic for listening to boc in the late '90s. which is fine, there are plenty of bands that are equivalent to that for me. but it's a little funny since their whole thing has always been nostalgia for the past so now it's like nostalgia for nostalgia for the past? tldr; i listened to some of the new album and found it mostly dull

na (NA), Tuesday, 16 June 2026 14:44 (two days ago)

Gonna say it: after another few listens, I am seriously underwhelmed by the Crespi Drum Ensemble record that many here are really infatuated with. This is nice enough drum programming with little to no denouement, few peaks or valleys, little dynamism. It's really flat sounding to me. I can imagine it would feel overwhelming and hypnotic on a large system, but in both my very good car system and my quite good sound bar with sub, this just doesn't strike me as anything special. Not trying to yuck anyone's yum, I am glad that people like it, but it is very much not for me.

a tv star not a dirty computer man (the table is the table), Tuesday, 16 June 2026 14:46 (two days ago)

lol weren't there like 3 or 4 total posts about that one? and fwiw as one of those posters, I will admit that I haven't listened to it a second time. I have a bad (I guess) habit of posting about music in my initial wow phase, including starting threads I forget about a month later

rob, Tuesday, 16 June 2026 14:51 (two days ago)

I kind of agree about the BoC record, but I'm also a boring "didn't like anything after Geogaddi" non-fan. I think the thread is rather adorable tbh

new Horse Lords rules the school

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 16 June 2026 15:23 (two days ago)

no hate, the new BOC album is solidly "very good", if i received it as a gift i'd keep it, but after it yet again inspiring me to listen to Future Sound of London's Dead Cities, it makes me realize how rich that work is in comparison. I don't even think it's close.

omar little, Tuesday, 16 June 2026 15:24 (two days ago)

it's hard for me to imagine anyone coming fresh to the new boc album and being excited about it, it feels like the whole audience is people who were into old boc music and are nostalgic for listening to boc in the late '90s.

I've been a big BoC fan since I first heard them, but I totally get people who don't click with them. I don't feel nostalgia when I listen to their music so much as appreciation for musicians who keep refining and building on the sound that made them distinct. I do find it super interesting to get reactions from people of different ages who weren't previously familiar. They've been mostly positive in my circle, but some of that might be them being biased by own enthusiasm for it.

beard papa, Tuesday, 16 June 2026 15:35 (two days ago)

i disagree with the existence of this thread. imo this post

would be a perfectly fine thing on the thread where people are praising the album (although i really dislike the phrase "yuck your yum")

i felt similarly about an erstwhile thread, whose name i've forgotten, but the gist was like "bump this thread to say something you didn't feel like saying in the thread itself". always full of chickenshit vagueposting

flopson, Tuesday, 16 June 2026 15:43 (two days ago)

it's kind of annoying too because then if you go back all the historical talking about the album isn't in the actual album thread

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 16 June 2026 15:46 (two days ago)

i have no idea which album imago is talking about in the first few posts of this bump

flopson, Tuesday, 16 June 2026 15:50 (two days ago)

Olivia Rodrigo...I think

in table's defence, he did post that same sentiment on the rolling thread where it had come up first

rob, Tuesday, 16 June 2026 15:51 (two days ago)

iirc I started this thread as a semi-joking imago containment thread ahead of an EOY poll, but UMS has a point

Serfin' USA (sleeve), Tuesday, 16 June 2026 15:52 (two days ago)

I'm largely anti-meta threads, but it also seems like a futile cause: the original "second thoughts" thread got locked and people started using the joke version, posters have turned the "things you just don't care about" thread into "ilx threads I hate" for some reason

rob, Tuesday, 16 June 2026 15:53 (two days ago)

imago containment thread

arguably still doing its job

flopson, Tuesday, 16 June 2026 15:54 (two days ago)

The bump led me to listen to "My Way" for the first time, which I liked a lot, though it sure felt like the Dan Nigro fingerprints (was a hair away from being a Chappell Roan song and catchy af). Thanks, imago!
