I've been listening to it on Spotify all weekend, and I'm one of those cheapskates who doesn't pay.
And can I just say "holy shit!" about this lyric:
Eddie's got one crazy eyeThat turns him into a cartoonWhen a pretty girl comes byAnd there's nothin' here to do anymoreHe sits on the stoop all dayLike there's something he's waiting forCunt-finger Louie picks up Eddie in the alleyHe's got all those guys with himFrom that town where they all look like Frankie ValliThey speak fluently blondeFrom her legs to her cigaretteAnd Louie told Eddie that he'd fix him upBut he ain't come back yet

Yeah “Living It Up” is such a masterpiece, simultaneously breezy, funny and devastating.

I just remembered that I was very close to nominating this for Jordan’s listening thread.
I went with Hats instead lol.

I've the piano melody line from Living It Up in my head for a few days. It's a friendly presence. Happy for it to stay for a while.
― that's not my post, Sunday, 3 December 2017 05:57 (six years ago) link
The best songs on this album are damn near the best pop songs that anyone has written, at any time. Living It Up (my vote), Pirates, A Lucky Guy. Impossibly gorgeous songs, all of them. But I remember Woody and Dutch being a real turkey, and thought the other big epic of the album was too ambitious for her own good. I'm listening to Traces of the Western Slopes again now, and it is a lot better than I remember (the self-harmony bits are taking me most of the way there), but it'll take a while to come around to the idea of this song being a successful experiment, and not just a weak Aja imitation.
― ascai, Sunday, 3 December 2017 06:10 (six years ago) link
think i'm going for "living it up" -- it's like a walk through life, so many feelings in six minutes
― k3vin k., Sunday, 3 December 2017 19:32 (six years ago) link
I struggled to find a favourite album for 1981 before I heard Pirates.

Yep that is basically perfect.
I ended up voting for "Pirates" but can't argue with that ordering at all.

Yeah, really. It's incredible, all of it.Is it weird if I say I'd like to put these background vocals in every song ever? Just have a synthesizer that produces those Rickie Lee "ba-da baaa"s.

What's going on with Rickie Lee's autobiography? It was supposed to come out several years ago but has beenrepeatedly delayed, and I think the title changed as well.

Traces Of The Western Slopes intro is so incredible. i've always thought of this LP as being an even-more-steely-dan Court & Spark - and this track hits that combined vibe the hardest.

I was thinking of picking up a compilation - from what I can tell, there's only one (a 3 CD set from Rhino), but why is it sequenced in alphabetical order? As a joke?
― birdistheword, Monday, 9 May 2022 20:03 (two years ago) link
Because she could?
FWIW, her debut and Pirates remain staples of cheapie vinyl bins, where nice copies can still be found for less than $5 a disc.

Yeah, but I mainly stick with digital and Pirates was reissued by MFSL on SACD some years ago. (Straight from the original master tapes. Sunds great.) Expensive now but I think I got it on clearance for like $15 and change.
