classic neil

hi i’m darren and i’m a bouncer from bendigo (bizarro gazzara), Friday, 1 December 2017 19:58 (eight years ago)

it's hard to make a website with yourself
when you're old enough to drupal
and young enough to html

Universal LULU Nation (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 1 December 2017 19:59 (eight years ago)

Neil being a champion of all things analog, the server for the archives site is actually a giant abacus.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Friday, 1 December 2017 20:03 (eight years ago)

it will employ over 3 dozen abacus workers, toiling round the clock to keep up with the server demand

flip that neil switch!!!! not bragging just saying my audio quality is 2,877 right now, feels great

I love that the search icon is a keyhole from the game Myst

Universal LULU Nation (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 1 December 2017 20:05 (eight years ago)

keyhole = search is seriously grade A classic neil

Karl Malone, Friday, 1 December 2017 20:07 (eight years ago)

woah i got over 3,800 in audio quality then it crashed
icarus flew too close to the sun

Universal LULU Nation (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 1 December 2017 20:13 (eight years ago)

i'm not even gonna bother with this tbh

just gonna wait until neil dies and someone else puts this stuff out in a reasonable way

marcos, Friday, 1 December 2017 20:15 (eight years ago)

Drawer makes clacky ratchet sound when it opens, but folders don't make whispy shuffle sound as you flip through them.

Mungolian Jerryset (bendy), Friday, 1 December 2017 20:16 (eight years ago)

I love that the search icon is a keyhole from the game Myst

neil saw some late 90s "enhanced cd-rom" things and was impressed

marcos, Friday, 1 December 2017 20:19 (eight years ago)

Needs to integrate winamp visualizer plugins for full psychedelic pill effect.

Mungolian Jerryset (bendy), Friday, 1 December 2017 20:22 (eight years ago)

it is kinda hilarious how much this resembles his Blu-ray menu crap from the late 90s/early 00s

Οὖτις, Friday, 1 December 2017 20:27 (eight years ago)

neil: gedda hold of this idea: you'll be able to click on the jpeg, and that'll open up other things you can play with!
neil hanger-ons ('the booger boys'): sounds great neil

Karl Malone, Friday, 1 December 2017 20:30 (eight years ago)

Neil would never use the word jpeg

Οὖτις, Friday, 1 December 2017 20:32 (eight years ago)

Do you have to "log in" in order to get access? Neil, you shouldn't have to log in to get into the Doghouse

chr1sb3singer, Friday, 1 December 2017 20:33 (eight years ago)

Elliott Roberts kicks open the office door: "GODDAMMIT WHICH ONE OF YOU MOTHERFUCKERS SHOWED NEIL MYST?! THIS ARCHIVE IS NEVER GOING FUCKING MAKE SENSE!"

(joke h/t to trylerw)

chr1sb3singer, Friday, 1 December 2017 20:35 (eight years ago)

Also please tell me that Neil's management office is a Mad Men/Barney Miller style office bullpen where people smoke and discuss Neil albums that don't eventually get released and there is office intrigue and Elliott Roberts has a big office at the far end of the room and omg this could be a prestige cable drama!

Show Me A Pono

Never Learn To Mike Love (C. Grisso/McCain), Friday, 1 December 2017 20:43 (eight years ago)

Assistant: Elliott, the tracklisting for Homegrown has gone missing. I'm so sorry.

Roberts: [softly weeps]

tylerw, Friday, 1 December 2017 20:45 (eight years ago)

intheblanks, Friday, 1 December 2017 20:46 (eight years ago)

Οὖτις, Friday, 1 December 2017 20:59 (eight years ago)

does anything on the search function work?

tylerw, Friday, 1 December 2017 21:01 (eight years ago)

If you land on the front page, and click the 'back' button in the top left it takes you back to... the page you were on before you went to the Neil Young Archives! In my case: Google, googling Neil Young Archives. This is insanity!

Universal LULU Nation (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 1 December 2017 21:11 (eight years ago)

"I don't care, the people must have FULL QUALITY"

Got The Quality/Ain't Got No Streamin'

Never Learn To Mike Love (C. Grisso/McCain), Friday, 1 December 2017 22:01 (eight years ago)

Forgot about this until just now, but I'm knee-deep in this site and trying to swim. Some of the extra memorabilia is frustrating cause there's not enough info on it, like the multiple handwritten tracklists for the 1st album with titles I don't know:

http://images.contentful.com/2okapnzdylk2/1968_0828_02_docs02/9a34d36a680bd9e86ca507cc4ce7215e/1968_0828_02_docs02.png

Based on the way he's set it up, you'd think those weirdo-titles would show up as individual listings, just without a playback option, but nope.

Also, if any of you still use soulseek, I just checked and somebody's got a DVD-RIP of the Hal Ashby Solo Trans Film that downloads quick. It's a great document of that era - during Don't Be Denied the giant video screen starts playing Springfield TV and Harvest barn rehearsal clips from Journey Through, and the crowd flips out. 'I've Got A Problem' is there too, better than the Catalyst Crazy Horse version imo.

also also, if you're patient you can manage to pull the photos/scans out:

Briggs' tape box art from 'Everybody Knows' era:

haha loving all these descriptions

niels, Saturday, 2 December 2017 09:01 (eight years ago)

My team and I have spent years developing this site to make it both enjoyable and easy to use.

niels, Saturday, 2 December 2017 09:08 (eight years ago)

this thing is working pretty well for me now, currently jamming the Fillmore 1970 "Cowgirl"

has anyone tried buying a track?

sleeve, Sunday, 3 December 2017 01:48 (eight years ago)

interesting thing lurking in the archives code ... this would be GOOD. live debut of Tonight's the Night in 1973.

I approve of this decision, Neil you can go ahead and release this

chr1sb3singer, Wednesday, 6 December 2017 20:54 (eight years ago)

three weeks pass...

another unreleased placeholder album that either has been added or I didn't notice before:

Alchemy from 2012 (grouped w/Americana and Psychedelic Pill)...the art says it's a Crazy Horse album but when you click it says Neil Young

Joan Digimon (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 29 December 2017 15:28 (eight years ago)

Toast is on there now in 01 not sure if it was

Joan Digimon (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 29 December 2017 15:35 (eight years ago)

Alchemy was a post-psychedelic pill live album that Neil teased at some point if I remember correctly. Think it was touted as the completion of the Rust Trilogy, which is something Neil made up (after having forgotten about year of the horse).

tylerw, Friday, 29 December 2017 15:37 (eight years ago)

I love how this whole thing creates more questions than it answers

sleeve, Friday, 29 December 2017 15:39 (eight years ago)

classic neil

h.p. minecraft (bizarro gazzara), Friday, 29 December 2017 16:04 (eight years ago)

Glanced at this site, still confused. Is it just a pile of streamable files? Can you download, or does that cost money?

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 29 December 2017 16:05 (eight years ago)

right now it's just a very weirdly organized streaming site built around either a weird timeline or "file cabinet" interface
you can buy hi-rez files from some weird neil young orastream site but the albums end up costing $20+ for downloads, or it links off to physical copies on amazon
haven't had much lucking getting songs to actually play today could be my work connection tho :/

Joan Digimon (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 29 December 2017 16:52 (eight years ago)

but you can get a tour from neil himself!!!

News Items From The Archives Page (That You Can't C'n'P From):

Film and Audio for Alchemy, chronicling the most recent Crazy Horse tour, is imminent...pending on the finalization of the cover art.

The '73 Roxy collection is in pre-production and should be ready "in time for a March release"

A weekly "Movie Night" of vault footage is coming to the website.
