Their later stuff is #great but their high point remains “release,” at least for me

They're a hard working band -- I think they've crossed the country four times in the last couple years. Every show I see there's more and more people. A group of five curious friends accompanied me at the one last month, and minds were properly blown. However, they're definitely still underground, as there is a big hurdle to cross over into the more semi-mainstream success of, say, Mastodon, QOTSA or uh, Evanescence. They don't neatly fit into any genre that is fashionable right now.

A good example are the two reviewers from Overkill via BangerTV. Seeing them talk about other music, they are often fairly articulate, but they come off pretty moronic here because they just don't know what to make of Elder. They don't fit into any one convenient bucket of doom, sludge, psych or prog, so they dismiss them as it's outside of their comfort zone.

They remastered their first two albums, and added demos to the first one. I've already bought two different CDs of the first album, but I gladly paid the $7 on Bandcamp for this:

For additional perspective on their sales, here's the report after their first week of sales.

http://www.metalinsider.net/columns/metal-by-numbers/metal-by-numbers-614-miss-may-i-missed-some-sales

Miss May I sold 4,425, and Eighteen Visions 3,525. I've never even heard of those bands. Elder was the 11th rock/metal entry listed with just 520 albums sold.

Fastnbulbous, Monday, 4 December 2017 16:10 (eight years ago)

Nick also has a 50 track or so public playlist on Spotify.

calstars, Monday, 4 December 2017 18:39 (eight years ago)

...and it’s very mellow, very “the amazing” for lack of a better reference

calstars, Monday, 4 December 2017 19:29 (eight years ago)

I wonder how they calculate numbers for albums that sell in those numbers. It's usually very hard to find credible sales figures for classical recordings that sell even five figures. Is the album only available through Bandcamp?

"Even six figures" (Reich/Glass numbers) is what I meant.

Yeah that Gold & Silver Sessions was so good, I'd love to hear more of that influence creep into their next full length. This band slays so hard.

I just emailed Armageddon Shop to see how the hell you preorder from them. I bought Reflections and Lore from Stickman and had them shipped from Germany because Armageddon Shop's web presence is like, Geocities level.

armageddonlabel.bigcartel.com for ordering in the states. They certainly do not make it easy.

Revolutionary Girl Utrenja (Tom Violence), Thursday, 16 April 2020 17:53 (six years ago)

I was gonna suggest Newbury Comics (since bigcartel's shipping rates tend toward the extortionate IMO) but they're shut down thanks to COVID.

Listening to this now for the first time. Re: complaints about the vocals from the rolling metal thread: his singing has always sounded like that, but the melodies are doing a lot more on this album, and his voice can't quite keep up. I agree that it doesn't really hinder my enjoyment of the album, though. I do kind of miss the heaviness of Lore, but I'd rather have Elder doing Elder, there's tons of other bands doing heavy stoner jams.

Revolutionary Girl Utrenja (Tom Violence), Tuesday, 28 April 2020 19:12 (six years ago)

Still waiting for my pre-order to get here before cracking into it, but the EP from last year really has me excited to hear it.

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 28 April 2020 19:14 (six years ago)

Oh yeah, my preorder hasn't come. RI is supposed to be getting off lockdown next week, I'm not sure if that's what's held it up. Stickman copies have shipped and European FB acquaintances have their copies in hand.

Revolutionary Girl Utrenja (Tom Violence), Tuesday, 28 April 2020 19:16 (six years ago)

Yeah, mine has shipped and I got the notification, but the tracking number through Stamps.com just shows the progress it's made so far, doesn't have an expected delivery date like regular USPS tracking does.

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 28 April 2020 19:18 (six years ago)

Enjoying this, but agreeing about the vocalist not being able to keep up with the melodies. The moments I enjoy most on this are when the singing stops and the band takes over.

beard papa, Tuesday, 28 April 2020 19:22 (six years ago)

The vocals have never really been the big draw for me with these guys anyway, but that seems to be a common complaint about the new one so I'm interested to hear it.

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 28 April 2020 19:24 (six years ago)

fuckin' LORE, man

alpine static, Tuesday, 28 April 2020 21:21 (six years ago)

just got around to OMENS ... dude's vocals aren't bothering me at all ... another banger from this band, as far as i can tell.

i might spring for their most recent EP on bandcamp today, even though it's kinda spendy for 3 tracks ... granted they run 34 minutes long.

alpine static, Friday, 1 May 2020 23:33 (six years ago)

Yeah I just don’t understand the vocal dislike at all. This isn’t pop
