i rolled my eyes at the first several lines but otherwise i actually kinda like this one, the production feels good

True :)
Not a good song though. "I want to wear you initials around my neck". Ok... I stand by what I said upthread. Everything about the new songs feels like complete digression. It's like she lashed out at her critics once (Look what you made me do), but after that crawled up into known territory and resorted to songs that were also written ten years ago. I don't get it. It's not even a lack of progress, it's a huge, defensive step back.
― Le Bateau Ivre, Friday, 3 November 2017 21:25 (eight years ago)
regression damnit, not digression
so it's not a tesla cover
I thought that too.
This song stinks.

I actually have far more time and admiration for her music this time round than 1989 for whatever reason. Maybe the omniprescence during the 1989 era put me off as well as the fact that she didn't seem particularly sincere (as has been well-documented of course).
― Custard Cream, Monday, 6 November 2017 20:15 (eight years ago)
this album comes out in 4 days and she seems almost nonexistent
― dyl, Monday, 6 November 2017 23:17 (eight years ago)
does anyone think this song sounds like a defense of white privilege? yeesh. although now she shouldn't able to sue people for making that (dumb) claim
― akm, Tuesday, 7 November 2017 00:19 (eight years ago)
something i really don't get is why people seem to think she's secretly a trump supporter, she seems much more like your general wealthy socially-liberal-but-fiscally-conservative clinton voter. Like sure she doesn't want to talk about politics (which in this day and age isn't exactly a laudable move) but ffs that doesn't automatically mean she's a trump supporter
― josh az (2011nostalgia), Tuesday, 7 November 2017 04:55 (eight years ago)
i haven't heard that she's a trump supporter, but you pretty much nailed what i thought of her & the vibe i got from many people. saw a lot of people come at her, before this album too, of being an implicit white supremacist or something idk

maybe all those people ordered Swift albums before they realized they didn't want them? and then they forgot they ordered them?
― Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 7 November 2017 12:53 (eight years ago)
otoh if TS has beef with the Westdashians doesn’t that imply she’s #NeverTrump through the transitive property of Kanye’s non sequitur visit to Trump Tower to hang out with the president-elect
― El Tomboto, Tuesday, 7 November 2017 12:54 (eight years ago)
And if Bannon is a fungus as many suspect then we might assume Super Mario also has issues with the current governing elite - perhaps Taylor and Mario ARE DATING
― El Tomboto, Tuesday, 7 November 2017 12:56 (eight years ago)
She should date Bannon, dump him, then write a mean song about him to win people back.

for established artists first-week sales, esp preorders, are reflective of how well the previous album cycle went. (it's like the difference between born this way and artpop.) i'm sure this album will sell wonderfully (at first) but i wouldn't be so sure about the next one.

maybe she gets a bad score but who cares this will fly off Wal Mart shelves on Black Friday this is dropping right in time for Xmas shopping season. the bad press and controversy is part of the album cycle. imo here she pulls this kind of meta narrative thing off far more compelling than most these days (see Arcade Fire).

― Simon H., Wednesday, 8 November 2017 01:41 (eight years ago)
I'm not totally on top of what are considered to be the essential and non-essential components of a New Jersey album, but one possibly part-distinguishing feature of this album cycle is that if the album does crash and burn then both the stylistic/thematic/lyrical changes and the surrounding news context will provide a readymade narrative for a subsequent attempt at "course correction"* - if Taylor ultimately wants, she can seek to reframe this album as having been her Erotica.**
* perhaps depressingly, the most likely course correction would simply be an attempt to make 1990 rather than, oh, say, an album of confessional rockers spiked with self-loathing.
** obv there is no prospect of this album being as good as Erotica. I wondered whether the better point of comparison was Jewel's 0304, but that seems a bit off given 0304 was more like a hail mary pass from an artist already well and truly on the downward slope, having already gotten her New Jersey out of the way two albums prior.
― Tim F, Wednesday, 8 November 2017 01:55 (eight years ago)
That's the trick with New Jersey albums, Tim: they don't crash and burn. They sell well, often very well.
― morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 8 November 2017 01:56 (eight years ago)
i don't think there will be a big drop-off from 1989 at all
― flappy bird, Wednesday, 8 November 2017 01:59 (eight years ago)
sales wise
xxpost don't they tend only to sell well initially and then drop off - at least compared to the artist's prior performance?
I think TS and/or her team would consider anything more than a 30% drop relative to 1989 sales to be pretty troubling - though I think it would be the scale of the miss (together with surrounding public treatment) that would then determine what the reaction to that would be.
Of course for an Erotica level underperformance it'd be something in the order of a 60% drop, which I think is unlikely.
