Kev and Flopson you missed out on the emo poll.

Spottie, Saturday, 21 October 2017 19:58 (eight years ago)

(the rest will be from TDAG and on)

xp spottie i really never dove deep enough into enough back in the day to have a truly informed vote, i was more into rap at that point in my life

k3vin k., Saturday, 21 October 2017 20:03 (eight years ago)

Yah I was heavy into both in my early-mid 20s

Spottie, Saturday, 21 October 2017 20:13 (eight years ago)

i listened to 3 emo albums in my life at present, including this one lol

flopson, Saturday, 21 October 2017 20:20 (eight years ago)

i loved atdi in hs but ito rock shit i was p much excluse the 'garage' scene (broadly defined) in my early twenties, no regrets as i had the time of my life playing and going to shows twice a week. the only ppl i knew into emo then were more about the mathy/post-hardcore end of it; i think i wasn't fully aware of how fully good emo bangs as conventional rock music

flopson, Saturday, 21 October 2017 20:37 (eight years ago)

i havent listened to much "emo" music in like a decade, so maybe the scene itself has changed, but if science fiction is seen as an emo album it probably has more to do with the band's historic association with that scene than it does with the actual music

k3vin k., Saturday, 21 October 2017 20:37 (eight years ago)

i mean this is just a rock album

k3vin k., Saturday, 21 October 2017 20:38 (eight years ago)

it's post-emo

flopson, Saturday, 21 October 2017 20:46 (eight years ago)

chorus of same logic is straight emo imo

flopson, Saturday, 21 October 2017 20:47 (eight years ago)

yeah there's some touches for sure

k3vin k., Saturday, 21 October 2017 20:51 (eight years ago)

JUST JEALOUS CAUSE WERE YOUNG AND IN LOVE

another note from the show - lacey played 'soco amaretto lime' but changed the lyrics from "you're just jealous cause were young and in love" to "i'm just jealous cause you're young and in love"

Mordy, Saturday, 21 October 2017 23:01 (eight years ago)

the enunciation of the "boy we gave you every opportunity" part is super emo

yeah i noticed this from a youtube recently, i like the change. also on a mostly unrelated note he sings "i am paid to make you boys panic while i sing" in "spin light" these days -- i get the feeling he realizes some of his earlier lyrics were kind of, to use a contemporary term, a little problematic

k3vin k., Saturday, 21 October 2017 23:43 (eight years ago)

it was just striking to me along w/ the other stuff that it's a much darker more pessimistic gloomy take

Mordy, Saturday, 21 October 2017 23:45 (eight years ago)

yeah no idea what kind of place jesse is in but he's always been outwardly pretty troubled

k3vin k., Sunday, 22 October 2017 00:07 (eight years ago)

the old stuff is good for what it is (music for kids) but it's not something i can really imagine listening to all the time anymore

fwiw i understand why you and presumably lacey feel this way but i think deja entendu continues to contain some of their most direct, affecting + memorable work. but i never think that "music for kids" is necessarily a limitation on popular music (i still listen to pet sounds too)

Mordy, Sunday, 22 October 2017 00:07 (eight years ago)

there were signs all over the venue when you entered that said that there would be no crowd surfing at the show and anyone who crowd surfed would get ejected. when the concert started the band played the first few songs behind a gate/fence that spanned the entire length of the stage like they were in jail. i was thinking "oh my god he is so freaked out about the audience he is playing behind a gate now" but it lifted after the first few songs i felt whew

Mordy, Sunday, 22 October 2017 00:10 (eight years ago)

sort of feel like if i were a band of brand new's popularity i'd be performing behind something bulletproof

Won't matter whose side you're on

k3vin k., Friday, 3 November 2017 19:38 (eight years ago)

Not there yet but I might have to resign to the fact that come December, this will be true for me as well. Pacing in that direction.

*dreams of Brand New winning the EOY poll*

Le Bateau Ivre, Friday, 3 November 2017 20:23 (eight years ago)

Will def be a top 5

Spottie, Friday, 3 November 2017 20:27 (eight years ago)

my new favorite part of this album is the solo in “137”

k3vin k., Saturday, 4 November 2017 01:13 (eight years ago)

The guitar solo in "137" is the most glorious musical moment of 2017.

Yeah that whole song is great but I'm always waiting for that bit.

The album is currently my 2nd-favourite of the year behind Paramore.

Gavin, Leeds, Saturday, 4 November 2017 13:55 (eight years ago)

both will be in my top 5 as well for sure

i’ve been flagging more posts than usual today

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Friday, 10 November 2017 22:55 (eight years ago)

it’s almost always some asshole making a joke out of sexual assault

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Friday, 10 November 2017 22:55 (eight years ago)

https://www.facebook.com/BrandNew/posts/10155923794753023

jesse basically admits to it without actually addressing it

don't recommend the comments

ufo, Sunday, 12 November 2017 03:40 (eight years ago)

Felt like some of the powers that be were dragging their feet about permanently writing these guys off, but those new allegations should be the nail in the coffin. Truly horrific.

There was some other Warped Tour band a few years back accused of some similar grooming, right? Can't remember which one they were, but it makes me wonder if this is a trend that's particularly common in this scene. Seems like a toxic confluence of technology/fan access + song subject matter perfect for drawing/earning the trust and sympathies of vulnerable young fans. It recasts the band's entire discography in a sinister light, knowing that their albums were effectively a trap used to lure victims.

i think this is a weird conclusion to arrive at but it sure is popular

anyway yes this band is basically dead to me

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Tuesday, 14 November 2017 16:16 (eight years ago)

Great piece. Also this one from 2015 hints at how vast the scope of the problem is: https://medium.com/cuepoint/warped-behavior-sexual-violence-on-tour-8ad218d50bc9

Gotta imagine there's a reckoning coming. How many dozens of bands must have known this stuff went on and turned a blind eye to it?

Evan R, Tuesday, 14 November 2017 18:09 (eight years ago)

i was once at a green day show when i was about 15, i was getting a ride home from these friends of a friend's older brother and they were huge nerds who wanted to stay and meet the band afterwards, which i wasn't really interested in but they were my ride home. tre cool (who would've been late 20s at the time) spent the whole time trying to convince a 15/16 year old girl to get on the tour bus with him, and pulled his cock out at some stage with some really flimsy pretext.

-_- (jim in vancouver), Tuesday, 14 November 2017 18:19 (eight years ago)

jesus fucking christ

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Tuesday, 14 November 2017 18:25 (eight years ago)

When I was in university taking a shuttle bus between campuses, I randomly overheard a girl (roughly my age at the time so I'd say 18-20) talking about how she'd had sex with someone from GD after a show. That's pretty second-hand, obviously, but it's always stayed with me.
