ts: memory vs. spelling

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:38 (twenty-two years ago)

what is 'here comes the indian' like?

cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 10 January 2004 02:14 (twenty-two years ago)

three weeks pass...
New live dates from the paw-tracks page, which means new material!
February 20th - New York - Barnard College with Need New Body and White Magic - Prentis Hall - 632 W 125th St.

February 21st - New York - Knitting Factory with the Numbers

March 27th - New York - Anthology Film Archives

Deacon told me it might even be danceable!
Plus jane is playing with Orthrealm and Black dice next Friday at the Knit. New York's long dark winter is over.

Mitchell (Mitchell), Friday, 6 February 2004 19:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Also since a lot of people were asking: the Jane CDRs were released in photocopied black and white 7" sleeves which made them look kind of like a punk band. The covers are really nice though and they often feature the steal your face dead logo.
They made them all themselves, very few, I don't know how many and I guess they are all gone. They have been talking about putting out a 12"
One description I read somewhere is Cologne beats with psych vocals. Pretty true. The vocals are heavily effected, like a lot of AS stuff. One song, "Coconuts" sounds like reggae. That one and solid gold wall are my favorites. Most songs are around 20 minutes long.

Mitchell (Mitchell), Friday, 6 February 2004 22:33 (twenty-two years ago)

mitchell - i've asked at other music twice and written Noah personally, and those CDRs are GONE, man - please put it up on soulseek!!!!

roger adultery (roger adultery), Friday, 6 February 2004 22:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I like Terrestrial Tones.

but as far as the AT & PB stuff is concerned, what little I've heard all sounds like Cornelius.

Roger, Friday, 6 February 2004 22:44 (twenty-two years ago)

roger, I would except, well, I don't even own a computer.

Roger, have you only heard Spirit...? If you like TT I would reccomend Here Comes the Indian esp the "Two Sails" and "Infant Dressing Table" tracks.

Mitchell (Mitchell), Friday, 6 February 2004 23:01 (twenty-two years ago)

mitchell - i guess then a burn is out of the question?

roger adultery (roger adultery), Friday, 6 February 2004 23:11 (twenty-two years ago)

roger, I'll see what I can do. I probably can use a friend's computer.

Mitchell (Mitchell), Friday, 6 February 2004 23:14 (twenty-two years ago)

i'll take this opportunity to mention (for the sake of anybody reading this thread who hasn't made up their mind about buying it or not) that nothing i read from ilxors before buying prepared me for it.

i was expecting some sort of fried elephant six acid folk - instead i got dense sheets of tape manipulation and scary noises. i honestly feel this stuff is closer to stockhausen than elephant six.

i've heard some live jackie o motherfucker bootlegs (very heavy on turntables) that start to approximate the sound but yeah, it's very very tapeloop/effects heavy.

vahid (vahid), Friday, 6 February 2004 23:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Vahid, which record did you buy? My guess is you bought "Here Comes.." It's like the opposite of what I said to Roger. All the Elephant 6/ Flaming Lips comparisons make sense, maybe, when talking about Spirit or Campfire Songs.
The other stuff is definitely fucked.
But, in gerneal, I don't think Avey Tare gets enough credit for his ability to write hooks. Even the most effected, distorted material has a hook, imo.
eg the repeated vocal "hiccups" in "Infant Dressing Table" or the simple keyborad line in "I See You Pan"

The new record, recorded as a duo of AT and PB, is maybe the most acid folk material thus far. It is mainly acoustic guitars, fun percusion, and catchy (but still fucked) songwriting.

Mitchell (Mitchell), Friday, 6 February 2004 23:27 (twenty-two years ago)

haha my friend doesn't like them because 'they sound like the beatles'.

cozen (Cozen), Friday, 6 February 2004 23:30 (twenty-two years ago)

great hook: 'doggy' from campfire songs (still remaining the only animal collective i own due to being poor/slsk not working in the dorm--kakadelic???)

x-o-x-xo

Ian Johnson (orion), Friday, 6 February 2004 23:32 (twenty-two years ago)

mitchell - wow yeah i'd super appreciate that and promise to share with other ILXors, who are also, doubtlessly, jonesing to hear it

i have much to trade - email me if yr lookin for anything - can also pay postage and some extra if ya want

by the way, Avey's split with Grubbs on FatCat is awesome. there's an animal collective lp coming out on Fat Cat this year too

roger adultery (roger adultery), Friday, 6 February 2004 23:32 (twenty-two years ago)

for some reason i tend to forget that half of "dusk at cubist castle" is abstract tape experiment. maybe that just shows that compared to animal collective or JoMF the e6 crew are tapeloop dilletantes.

vahid (vahid), Friday, 6 February 2004 23:33 (twenty-two years ago)

mitchell: good guess!

vahid (vahid), Friday, 6 February 2004 23:33 (twenty-two years ago)

i think i can hear that beatles thing actually!

i dont like this that much any more either tho.

prima fassy (bob), Friday, 6 February 2004 23:34 (twenty-two years ago)

i really hope you can sort something out with those jane cdrs, i'm dying to hear them. i wrote to the animal collective and they suggested trying other music again, and a couple of weeks ago they said they'd be getting some in last week, but i've heard nothing since :-(

zemko have you heard hollindagain?

toby (tsg20), Friday, 6 February 2004 23:39 (twenty-two years ago)

keep up zemko!

cozen (Cozen), Friday, 6 February 2004 23:43 (twenty-two years ago)

prima fassy

it was a good pun. it was just too punky. people would call me fassy and think it hurt. close your eyes little one! ack

zemko (bob), Friday, 6 February 2004 23:54 (twenty-two years ago)

havent heard hollindagain no, it's the fat cat one right? feels a bit like the ship has sailed. i wanna hear the russian futurists more now! didnt fancy the double lepers either huh toby

zemko zemkingdom (bob), Friday, 6 February 2004 23:58 (twenty-two years ago)

i miss prima fassy :(

cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 7 February 2004 00:16 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm not sure you'll like the russian futurists, prima fassy.

cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 7 February 2004 00:17 (twenty-two years ago)

i d/led the first 3 rusfut trax off the website.

i hate it like the universe

cozemko (bob), Saturday, 7 February 2004 01:09 (twenty-two years ago)

shame on ya for missing double leopards!

I wanna hear this after vahid's stockhausen mention. he also sounds like the beatles.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 7 February 2004 01:16 (twenty-two years ago)

eh caveat emptor - i am not a stockhausen expert!!

vahid (vahid), Saturday, 7 February 2004 01:40 (twenty-two years ago)

hollindagain's the ultra limited live album that's impossible to find. except on slsk.

my flatmate was ill yesterday and i promised to cook her dinner, hence no double leopards for me...

toby (tsg20), Saturday, 7 February 2004 08:22 (twenty-two years ago)

how do they do THAT?

cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 20:51 (twenty-two years ago)

wow, just downloaded the grubbs / avey split and it is really nice. very pastoral and mellow. the field recordings on abyss song are great. apparently there is a new album

might as well bring it up again, but if anyone would want to trade for the jane cd or has it on slsk i would would love to hear it!

they posted some new tour dates on the paw tracks site, euro / uk mainly (in april):

http://carparkrecords.com/pawtracks.html

marcg (marcg), Saturday, 14 February 2004 18:26 (twenty-two years ago)

er, i meant to say apparently there is a new paw tracks comp and panda solo album out this year...

marcg (marcg), Saturday, 14 February 2004 18:28 (twenty-two years ago)

the 30/4 london gig will also feature manitoba in some capacity i believe (djing?). i'm quite tempted to go to the 25th april one as well...

toby (tsg20), Saturday, 14 February 2004 18:41 (twenty-two years ago)

manitoba step off

why don't they play atp? : / invite them, malkmus!

cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 14 February 2004 18:45 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah is the coronet the place near elephant and castle? that will be cool...wow, buffalo bar will be nice too, so small.

marcg (marcg), Saturday, 14 February 2004 18:47 (twenty-two years ago)

if this is gd, which it probably will be (hollindagain!!!), then i'll probly follow them through to edinburgh too. colin?

cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 14 February 2004 18:52 (twenty-two years ago)

two weeks pass...
christ they're still so good, almost telepathic. the reports from the last show they played in nyc have made me jealous in a way i havent felt over a band in a long, long time.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 5 March 2004 02:23 (twenty-two years ago)

i have been listening to campfire songs every night before i go to bed for a month now. i havent had any bad dreams, so i am reluctant to stop.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 5 March 2004 02:25 (twenty-two years ago)

they're playing in scotland 3 times over a week I think.

here's the line-up fr the triptych gig:

Andre Williams, Explosions in the sky, Fennesz, Animal Collective, Dabrye, Matthew Dear, jd Twitch and jg wilkes, eyoe dj's.

cozen (Cozen), Friday, 5 March 2004 02:27 (twenty-two years ago)

dunno who aw is, never heard explosions nor dabrye. but fennesz, dear, ac and stirmonster!

cozen (Cozen), Friday, 5 March 2004 02:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm really sad that I didn't get off my ass and see them either of the times they played in NY recently. Campfire Songs = amazing beautiful.

Ian Johnson (orion), Friday, 5 March 2004 04:49 (twenty-two years ago)

the show a few weeks ago at the knitting factory was one of the most beautiful things i've seen in years. glasgow people, do not miss it! ian - for shame!

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 5 March 2004 05:46 (twenty-two years ago)

i hate your lauren! i believe i had a paper due the next morning, but there was no reason for me not to go the show at barnard.

Ian Johnson (orion), Friday, 5 March 2004 05:51 (twenty-two years ago)

they're playing 3 times in london, too. i'm def going to two of them, not sure about the third...
