Just gave the new one a once through listen thanks to man alive's recommendation on the masculinity thread. This is pretty much exactly what I need right now. Will be spending some time in this record, I can tell.

Nice! It has a lot to explore imo, I keep shifting which song I'm into, now it's Black Diamonds.

"Mythological Beauty" being set in Nisswa, MN def packs a punch to me, there's a certain beauty and squalor that's unique to Northern MN

Universal LULU Nation (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 13 October 2017 15:04 (eight years ago)

Haley is a gorgeous song!

Does it sound like the opening from Minnie Ripperton’s Les Fleurs to anyone else? I’m not technical, can anyone who actually identify notes confirm it’s the same chords?

✖✖✖ (Moka), Tuesday, 17 October 2017 22:06 (eight years ago)

not the same chords but I definitely see the sonic resemblence

IF (Terrorist) Yes, Explain (man alive), Tuesday, 17 October 2017 22:07 (eight years ago)

Yes again I’m not a musician so not very technical. Haley sounds to me like it starts in G and Les Fleurs in E? They do have the same sort of feel.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Tuesday, 17 October 2017 22:14 (eight years ago)

It's not just the key difference, Haley starts with an ascending pattern and Le Fleurs starts with a descending pattern.

IF (Terrorist) Yes, Explain (man alive), Tuesday, 17 October 2017 22:15 (eight years ago)

Haley also reminds me a lot of Jim O'Rourke's melodic stuff, can't put my finger on what in particular.

IF (Terrorist) Yes, Explain (man alive), Tuesday, 17 October 2017 22:18 (eight years ago)

Oh I see! I can hear it now that you mention it!

Then if they’re different chords in a different order... Can you explain better than me why am I hearing the same sort of vibe in these two? Is it the drums? The production?

✖✖✖ (Moka), Tuesday, 17 October 2017 22:19 (eight years ago)

Maybe Life Goes Off? xp

I don't know if I can explain it well, but I think the drum groove is definitely noticeably similar except much faster on Haley, and there's a fingerpicked acoustic guitar arpeggiating chords on both, and the ascending base note over the g chord on Haley probably feels similar to the descending bass note over the E chord on Les Fleurs.

IF (Terrorist) Yes, Explain (man alive), Tuesday, 17 October 2017 22:21 (eight years ago)

Yes I think that’s it. Lovely song either way!

I keep thinking that it's Adrianne in the new iPhone 8+ commercial--it can't be her, right?

A lot of material I don't recognize, new album in the works already?

IF (Terrorist) Yes, Explain (man alive), Thursday, 2 November 2017 02:26 (eight years ago)

Folks on this thread will appreciate this article: https://www.npr.org/2017/11/09/560267308/the-lore-of-big-thief

Also plz don't miss Adrianne's 2014 solo record: https://adriannelenker.bandcamp.com/. "Gone" is my go-to but the whole thing is fantastic.

cowtownboo, Saturday, 11 November 2017 07:30 (eight years ago)

The solo record and the two with Buck Meek are all really nice.

That article is really nice too, although I'm constantly disappointed by the lack of basic musical knowledge of "music writers" who write stuff like this:

On songs like "Black Diamonds," the closing track off Capacity, Krivchenia's drums are breathing things, and he plays more to specific notes and chords than to a constant beat.

Like, that's not true at all, he plays a very steady beat. It's called accents and fills.

IF (Terrorist) Yes, Explain (man alive), Sunday, 12 November 2017 15:26 (eight years ago)

I mean I know what the writer is sort of trying to get at, the way the drums follow the guitar and vocals at certain moments, but it's a really inaccurate description.

Saw her tonight in brooklyn. Almost all new songs. Amazing. Really excited for the solo record.

I’m reaching a stage in my life where I only want to hear new songs in a concert, or at least songs I haven’t played heavily. When she did Paul and everyone went “WOO!” it kind of took me out of it.

Like but don’t love the two new tracks. Looking forward to the record as I loved a lot of the new stuff I heard live.

Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Monday, 17 September 2018 01:49 (seven years ago)

My main feeling on them so far is that they did a little too much with the production. Seeing her live was so revelatory, and it kind of made me yearn for an album of just her and a guitar and a lot of space. But also the songs I like the best that I think are supposed to be on the new record haven't been released yet.

Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Tuesday, 18 September 2018 21:22 (seven years ago)

i like their production a lot. haven't heard the new stuff though

annoys me when all of an artist’s work merged into the thread for a single album

Meant to post "Interstate," because it's got that Wowee Zowee, meandering, fucked-up pop thing going for it

The melodic bit at the beginning of "Interstate" reminds me of The Amps' "I Am Decided" (this is good).

"Interstate" reminds me *so much* of some older/specific band... but I just can't place it. Maybe I will, eventually.

Big Thief has a way of bringing to mind other artists -- or other musical precedents that feel familiar -- without sounding at all "derivative."

stop creeping my instagram storiez (morrisp), Friday, 17 January 2020 22:29 (six years ago)

it's been said before but i get a lot of Radiohead vibes, old and recent, from some of their stuff. especially the guitar solos

doorstep jetski (dog latin), Friday, 17 January 2020 23:44 (six years ago)

Yeah - I'm not a Radiohead guy, but I've heard that said (here and elsewhere). I guess something like "Great White Shark" (on Capacity) sort of sounds like my conception of a certain type of Radiohead song (I could totally be wrong, though).

Re: "Interstate" -- I've listened back to some stuff, and that song kiiiinda reminds me of Beauty Pill... like something that could have appeared on The Unsustainable Lifestyle.

stop creeping my instagram storiez (morrisp), Friday, 17 January 2020 23:55 (six years ago)

I've also mentioned, in the Two Hands thread, how some of the band's mellow, chiming songs have sort of a Pinback vibe.

(I don't know if it's really useful or interesting to catalog these "reminds-me-of's"... but I do like gathering touchpoints like this.)

stop creeping my instagram storiez (morrisp), Saturday, 18 January 2020 00:01 (six years ago)

“Watering” has a bit of a Deerhunter feel

stop creeping my instagram storiez (morrisp), Sunday, 19 January 2020 02:07 (six years ago)

Love Radiohead, love Big Thief but don’t really hear the correlation.
