There is no such thing as objectively bad music but come on, Yeezus is a good album only in comparison to The Life of Pablo.

yeezus has cool production, while the beats on damn sound like they are made out of legos

I can understand why one may think that about parts of Yeezus, but otherwise I couldn't disagree more... while DAMN. production isn't as daring as that on To Pimp a Butterfly, it's still an impeccably put together and great sounding record. Yeezus sounds like arse, and at its worst sounds thrown together.

"bastard sons of geir" would be a good d/n

mh, Sunday, 24 September 2017 17:21 (eight years ago)

still my #2 of the year I think, am relistening now

imago, Sunday, 24 September 2017 18:14 (eight years ago)

people negatively comparing this to TPAB are missing the point, which is that this guy is operating at god level all of the time now, and is master of his choices

imago, Sunday, 24 September 2017 18:19 (eight years ago)

huh?

"If you like this record less than TPAB, you've missed the point of Kendrick."

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 24 September 2017 18:22 (eight years ago)

fine to like it less, but being critical, treating it like a step back rather than part of a brilliant continuum is kind of annoying, that's all

imago, Sunday, 24 September 2017 18:24 (eight years ago)

imago is one of Kendrick's day ones, TDE 4 lyfe

Universal LULU Nation (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Sunday, 24 September 2017 20:03 (eight years ago)

i like this one slightly less than TPAB, even though lots of people were down on its 'jazziness' at the time i feel like that made it more distinct than much of this record

i love 'loyalty' though, great song

What are the other good rap albums this year? I listen to a half dozen the other day, and nothing as good as Damn.

calzino, Sunday, 24 September 2017 21:52 (eight years ago)

Among mainstream rap albums, I play the 2 Chainz album a lot.

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 24 September 2017 21:57 (eight years ago)

this is very, very much in character and I apologise for it, but um the new Dälek is great

imago, Sunday, 24 September 2017 22:11 (eight years ago)

Culture still the best for me

Frederik B, Sunday, 24 September 2017 22:14 (eight years ago)

yeah Migos are great.

calzino, Sunday, 24 September 2017 22:14 (eight years ago)

That album is fine to me but kind of boring

I've somewhat come around on the Gucci tape

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Sunday, 24 September 2017 22:37 (eight years ago)

Calzino listen to the new mizzy alb

Damn is one of those records that makes other rap records sound thin.

Brockhampton's Saturation II. Very different record, but it scratches the same itch

Evan R, Monday, 25 September 2017 02:56 (eight years ago)

The new Rapsody album is so great

What were the half dozen you listened to?

Marcus Hiles Remains Steadfast About Planting Trees.jpg (DJP), Monday, 25 September 2017 13:47 (eight years ago)

basically if you ever wished for another proper Lauryn Hill rap album, this new Rapsody is pretty damn flawless imo (a terrible busta verse excepted)

Universal LULU Nation (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 25 September 2017 13:51 (eight years ago)

What are the other good rap albums this year?

Vince Staples Big Fish Theory

dinnerboat, Monday, 25 September 2017 13:57 (eight years ago)

"What were the half dozen you listened to?"

From memory: Chief Keef, Juicy J, Koran Streets, Open Mike Eagle

and I can't remember the other 2!

But lots of new recommendations to listen to now. New 2 Chainz sounds good.

calzino, Monday, 25 September 2017 14:04 (eight years ago)

Kool G Rap, Meek Mill, Wiley, RHQ all good (tho none are DAMN-level)

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Monday, 25 September 2017 14:10 (eight years ago)

just played Trap Check about 18 times in a row!

calzino, Monday, 25 September 2017 14:52 (eight years ago)

Big Fish Theory is one of the year's most disappointing albums for me. A Vince Staples record sapped of everything I loved about Vince Staples.

I don't think there's much love for J.I.D. on ilx, but he's about as "riyl Kendrick Lamar" as it gets.

Tee Grizzly and Milo have nothing to do with Kendrick but those are both sensational records. And yeah it's almost surreal how good the new 2 Chainz is.

Evan R, Monday, 25 September 2017 15:00 (eight years ago)

the Milo record annoyed me but it's probably worth a listen

imago, Monday, 25 September 2017 15:02 (eight years ago)

I was really digging the new Devin the dude album last night

Heez, Monday, 25 September 2017 15:21 (eight years ago)

the hip hop albums (with singles being a very different animal) that i've liked most thus far this year are from migos, kendrick, quelle chris, sob x rbe, fat joe and remy ma, THEY, Devin, Oddisee, 2 chainz, freddie gibbs, run the jewels, wiley, dj quik, stormzy, big boi, snoop, vince staples, gunplay, a-wax,

also worth trying/need to listen again closer: wifisfuneral, lacrae, vince staples, YoungBoy NBA, Ski Mask the Slump God, wifisfuneral, rich homie quan, 21 savage

Chocolate-covered gummy bears? Not ruling those lil' guys out. (ulysses), Monday, 25 September 2017 15:35 (eight years ago)

endorse many of these forks jawns -- Snoop esp was a nice surprise this year!

also deej really rode for Keydo Foolfunk - Funklyfe 3: Rickjamesshawty and it's definitely something everyone should hear IMO

no one mentioning playboi carti is baffling.

ANU (sisilafami), Monday, 25 September 2017 17:08 (eight years ago)

as with uzi, that's singles for me. the album is worth recommending?

Chocolate-covered gummy bears? Not ruling those lil' guys out. (ulysses), Monday, 25 September 2017 17:09 (eight years ago)

The album is great yes

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Monday, 25 September 2017 17:21 (eight years ago)

Valee's "VTM" is better than a lot of the stuff mentioned so far

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Monday, 25 September 2017 17:21 (eight years ago)

didn't mention Playboi Carti because the odds of any given Kendrick fan loving that one are pretty bad. That album is sheer joy though, maybe even a top 10 of the year for me

Evan R, Monday, 25 September 2017 17:27 (eight years ago)

Wish I heard some magic in that Valee album.... the mix is so flat!

Evan R, Monday, 25 September 2017 17:28 (eight years ago)

CupcakKe also released an awesome album, it's called
Queen Elizabitch

niels, Monday, 25 September 2017 19:49 (eight years ago)

the Carti album is great fun

was it flopson who described it as 'memorable banalities: the rap album'

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Monday, 25 September 2017 21:13 (eight years ago)
