It's his best album the way that Yeezus is Kanye's best album. It's not the album he'll be remembered for, but it's awesome and exciting and bold and perfect for what it is

Evan R, Monday, 18 September 2017 14:39 (eight years ago)

I don't understand that comparison at all

mh, Monday, 18 September 2017 14:40 (eight years ago)

in part because Yeezus is three quarters crap

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 18 September 2017 14:43 (eight years ago)

that's a good starting point for skepticism, to be sure

mh, Monday, 18 September 2017 14:45 (eight years ago)

Half is Yeezus is very good and half of Yeezus is intolerable bullshit. DAMN. runs the gamut from "good" to "holy shit where has this song been my whole life".

this iphone speaks many languages (DJP), Monday, 18 September 2017 14:46 (eight years ago)

they're both lean, no-bullshit, hard-hitting, personality-driven mid-career album by an elite A-list rapper with several more "prestigious" albums already under their belt. Not really a stretch?

yeah if you think Yeezus sucks the comparison doesn't hold but thinking Yeezus sucks is a pretty bizarre position imo

Evan R, Monday, 18 September 2017 14:48 (eight years ago)

That is 100% stretch considering the entire second half of Yeezus is filler.

this iphone speaks many languages (DJP), Monday, 18 September 2017 14:51 (eight years ago)

Also, if Yeezus is mid-career Kanye album god help us all

this iphone speaks many languages (DJP), Monday, 18 September 2017 14:51 (eight years ago)

Again, the comparison won't hold at all if you hate Yeezus for some bizarre reason.

Yeezus has a few duds in the second half but it also has Send It Up, I'm In It and Bound 2. That's still pretty good for any side of a record. DAMN. has some silly shit in its second half, too, but it doesn't dampen my love of that record much either

Evan R, Monday, 18 September 2017 14:54 (eight years ago)

yeah this album gets flabby towards the end c'mon. i think it's cool that he pulled back from the sprawling ambition of TBAP w/ a record like this, i would have guessed he'd keep going down that hole. i play this one a lot and about half of it feels canonical to me but i'd still rate it as his third best tho... even as an album of bangers i still think it's less good than GKMC.

J0rdan S., Monday, 18 September 2017 15:00 (eight years ago)

right now I want to say damn. is my favourite but I think that's just me being v immersed in it. his command of all the peculiarities of his voice feels virtuosic & agile, so many neat little hooks, phrases & flourishes. I always liked him woozy but this is comparatively breezy and I really love that about it

ogmor, Monday, 18 September 2017 15:14 (eight years ago)

imo TPAB and the follow-up outtakes were where Kendrick really came into this fully-developed persona and DAMN is him going back to a more regular album format while sitting in that established position

mh, Monday, 18 September 2017 15:16 (eight years ago)

better than GKMC, not as transcendently brilliant as TPAB

DUCKWORTH is one of my favorite songs ever, though

for a guy who does a fair amount of guest verses he rarely if ever feels like he's phoning it in, this is great (and rapsody is great too)

Universal LULU Nation (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 22 September 2017 14:21 (eight years ago)

Yeah, I think To Pimp a Butterfly is a better record, but this is still one of my favourite albums this year.

more Allegro-like (Turrican), Friday, 22 September 2017 15:25 (eight years ago)

I don't this album can be compared to Yeezus, which has a sort of comedy value for a couple of spins before it never gets played again, and rightly so because Yeezus is fucking terrible.

more Allegro-like (Turrican), Saturday, 23 September 2017 09:37 (eight years ago)

I'm liking Yeezus more by the minute

mh, Saturday, 23 September 2017 22:01 (eight years ago)

you can never compare an album to another album on ilx without someone chiming in with 'but that comparison is preposterous; i like one of these records and dislike the other!'

flopson, Sunday, 24 September 2017 01:50 (eight years ago)

Lol

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Sunday, 24 September 2017 07:16 (eight years ago)

Okay, I'll put it another way: if you think Yeezus is anywhere near in the same league as DAMN. then there's something seriously wrong with you.

more Allegro-like (Turrican), Sunday, 24 September 2017 08:11 (eight years ago)

one day, turrican will learn that taste is subjective, and only then will we all be beamed up

flappy bird, Sunday, 24 September 2017 13:00 (eight years ago)

Not before you learn that while taste is subjective, there is still such a thing as objectively good and/or bad music.

more Allegro-like (Turrican), Sunday, 24 September 2017 13:15 (eight years ago)

"objectively" lol no, there isn't

i like this album

flappy bird, Sunday, 24 September 2017 13:34 (eight years ago)

Of course there is, else the entire globe would be jacking off to Playing With Fire by Kevin Federline instead of rightfully calling it out for the piece of shit it is.

more Allegro-like (Turrican), Sunday, 24 September 2017 13:51 (eight years ago)

Hey friend please stop

Rob Lowe fresco bar (m bison), Sunday, 24 September 2017 14:23 (eight years ago)

I want you to read that sentence out loud to a loved one or pet of advanced intelligence and then justify to that person why you wrote it.

Rob Lowe fresco bar (m bison), Sunday, 24 September 2017 14:28 (eight years ago)

Half the globe jacking off to Kevin Federline.... This is the future liberals want

Universal LULU Nation (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Sunday, 24 September 2017 14:32 (eight years ago)

Lmbo!!!!

Rob Lowe fresco bar (m bison), Sunday, 24 September 2017 14:48 (eight years ago)

There is no such thing as objectively bad music but come on, Yeezus is a good album only in comparison to The Life of Pablo.

yeezus has cool production, while the beats on damn sound like they are made out of legos

I can understand why one may think that about parts of Yeezus, but otherwise I couldn't disagree more... while DAMN. production isn't as daring as that on To Pimp a Butterfly, it's still an impeccably put together and great sounding record. Yeezus sounds like arse, and at its worst sounds thrown together.

"bastard sons of geir" would be a good d/n

mh, Sunday, 24 September 2017 17:21 (eight years ago)

still my #2 of the year I think, am relistening now

imago, Sunday, 24 September 2017 18:14 (eight years ago)

people negatively comparing this to TPAB are missing the point, which is that this guy is operating at god level all of the time now, and is master of his choices

imago, Sunday, 24 September 2017 18:19 (eight years ago)

huh?

"If you like this record less than TPAB, you've missed the point of Kendrick."

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 24 September 2017 18:22 (eight years ago)

fine to like it less, but being critical, treating it like a step back rather than part of a brilliant continuum is kind of annoying, that's all

imago, Sunday, 24 September 2017 18:24 (eight years ago)

imago is one of Kendrick's day ones, TDE 4 lyfe

Universal LULU Nation (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Sunday, 24 September 2017 20:03 (eight years ago)

i like this one slightly less than TPAB, even though lots of people were down on its 'jazziness' at the time i feel like that made it more distinct than much of this record

i love 'loyalty' though, great song

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Sunday, 24 September 2017 20:55 (eight years ago)

What are the other good rap albums this year? I listen to a half dozen the other day, and nothing as good as Damn.

calzino, Sunday, 24 September 2017 21:52 (eight years ago)

Among mainstream rap albums, I play the 2 Chainz album a lot.

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 24 September 2017 21:57 (eight years ago)

this is very, very much in character and I apologise for it, but um the new Dälek is great

imago, Sunday, 24 September 2017 22:11 (eight years ago)

Culture still the best for me

Frederik B, Sunday, 24 September 2017 22:14 (eight years ago)

yeah Migos are great.

calzino, Sunday, 24 September 2017 22:14 (eight years ago)

That album is fine to me but kind of boring

I've somewhat come around on the Gucci tape
