Ha, I watched the concert film of that tour on Apple Music. Those clips were so strange.

I think that level of stardom would make anyone a little crazy. I definitely get Britney c. 2007 vibes from TS these days (not from her behavior, but the way she's being overexposed and marketed), but I don't think it's unintentional and possibly the inevitable byproduct of a self-perpetuating fame cycle of writing songs about being famous that people pay attention to by dint of her fame. Again, this is the point in a career where someone might put out a Chris Gaines/Sasha Fierce album, but I think she's just overthinking everything yet falling short of going over the edge, personally or creatively. Let me know when she impulsively marries some guy she knew in high school, though, and I'm sure my based in nothing armchair opinion will change.

New song is good. Ironically given the emergent narrative it feels like "oh what if a recent Katy Perry single sounded effortless and involving" to me.

"Ransom... some... some..." and "Island... and... and..." are ridiculous but she pulls them off. Best line though is "He can be my jailor / Burton to this Taylor".

"I'll be your Burton if you'll be my Liz" is an actual Colin Moulding line off the last, heavily-derided XTC record, jussayin' ;)

His name is not burton though so it's not as clever.

You're basically saying 'take away Taylor Swift from the song and it's actually pretty good'.

She's really aiming for that Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Award huh? It's like she's in regression.

"you should take it as a compliment that I'm talking to everyone here but you" is a great line that suggests that exact sensation of fear and lust that instant crushes create, but the rest of the lyrics are embarassingly bad.

The weird thing about latter-day Taylor is that the narrative-voice of the song seems to lack any intention or moral code or human thought pattern, from "Blank Space" onward the narrator seems to be chaining together emotional statement after emotional statement with no traceable path and it's very unrelateable

Yeah it's not that bad. Certainly very light, though.
