this would have been preferable as a lead single to the other one for sure

how do I hide all uses of "dead-eyed" on ILX?

dead your eyes

anyway the single is alessia cara's "stay" if produced by sleigh bells, which is more than ok
― sick, fucking funny, and well tasty (katherine), Sunday, 3 September 2017 20:39 (eight years ago)
A couple things: one, I think the ringer article is good and if you really think there's no new precedent being broken in america's relationship to celebrity that we elected Donald fucking trump I think you might not have thought this through
Second, the source of all the "record breaking streaming numbers" is that more and more people are using steaming. Apple's numbers are climbing quickly, more people use YouTube for streaming music now than did even a year ago... have you guys not noticed that what used to seem like "a lot of views" now is fairly easy to get? The records are always breaking as streaming becomes mainstream
― Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Monday, 4 September 2017 04:46 (eight years ago)
I guarantee that if reality television existed 200 years ago we'd have the equivalent of a Donald Trump, given America's propensity to take seriously candidates famous pretty much just for business, or to elect popular war heroes on the basis of them being popular war heroes and find those presidencies either crashing and burning or full of horrific shit even for the era. the idea that pre-2016 was some halcyon time of decorum in politics is complete bullshit and always has been
point about the streaming numbers is 100% correct though
― sick, fucking funny, and well tasty (katherine), Monday, 4 September 2017 04:52 (eight years ago)
There's a huge swath of discursive space between a fantasy halcyon past of decorum and the argument that nothing has changed, I think it's a frankly obvious observation that things have changed to the point where trump is electable & yes the rise of reality tv as a national phenomenon is a part of that.
― Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Monday, 4 September 2017 07:12 (eight years ago)
Fuck I don't get ILX - these last two singles suck. What you made me do sounds more like a response to her controlling A+R dept. than anything else. She's a pawn
― Week of Wonders (Ross), Monday, 4 September 2017 07:44 (eight years ago)
saying anyone's a "pawn" is silly, I'm sure she's making the music and visual statements she wants to makethough I think the sheer amount of debate centered around... almost anything Taylor Swift related other than the actual singles...speaks to their quality
― Universal LULU Nation (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 4 September 2017 13:40 (eight years ago)
Re: streaming, we forget so quickly that she is literally encouraging her fans to stream more in a competitive bid for fan points.
― Josh in Chicago, Monday, 4 September 2017 14:00 (eight years ago)
There were also video segments where Lena Dunham and Selena Gomez talked about baking cookies at Taylor Swift's apartment.
It suddenly occurred to me that Taylor Swift might be crazy
I don't mean that in a non-sympathetic way, more like a "I wonder if she has any real friends to stick by her through all of this" sort of way. Having Selena Gomez over to bake cookies sounds like something my mom would call her mom to set up because I'd been feeling bullied at school
― fgti, Monday, 4 September 2017 14:29 (eight years ago)
Ha, I watched the concert film of that tour on Apple Music. Those clips were so strange.
― No purposes. Sounds. (Sund4r), Monday, 4 September 2017 14:58 (eight years ago)
I think that level of stardom would make anyone a little crazy. I definitely get Britney c. 2007 vibes from TS these days (not from her behavior, but the way she's being overexposed and marketed), but I don't think it's unintentional and possibly the inevitable byproduct of a self-perpetuating fame cycle of writing songs about being famous that people pay attention to by dint of her fame. Again, this is the point in a career where someone might put out a Chris Gaines/Sasha Fierce album, but I think she's just overthinking everything yet falling short of going over the edge, personally or creatively. Let me know when she impulsively marries some guy she knew in high school, though, and I'm sure my based in nothing armchair opinion will change.
― Josh in Chicago, Monday, 4 September 2017 15:02 (eight years ago)
a handful of people itt drove me to bake cookies w/ selena gomez, so i get it, i think

I was listening to "Look what you made me do" and I realized it would have been a really great Sparks single, phone call lines included. Not sure if this was intentional or not, but still.

maybe sparks' next collaborative album will be TSS

New song is good. Ironically given the emergent narrative it feels like "oh what if a recent Katy Perry single sounded effortless and involving" to me.
"Ransom... some... some..." and "Island... and... and..." are ridiculous but she pulls them off. Best line though is "He can be my jailor / Burton to this Taylor".
― Tim F, Monday, 4 September 2017 22:07 (eight years ago)
"I'll be your Burton if you'll be my Liz" is an actual Colin Moulding line off the last, heavily-derided XTC record, jussayin' ;)
― imago, Monday, 4 September 2017 22:09 (eight years ago)
His name is not burton though so it's not as clever.
― Tim F, Monday, 4 September 2017 22:19 (eight years ago)
true

she didn't have the wit or gumption to rhyme 'liz' with 'pigs' though

Saw my first Taylor Swift UPS truck yesterday in DC. Did not hashtag or snapchat or whatever.
Album covers that would have worked better for a UPS tie-in:
