flopson, Wednesday, 23 August 2017 22:31 (eight years ago)

just one more fight about Peep's influence, and i will straight up FP this shit

flopson, Wednesday, 23 August 2017 22:56 (eight years ago)

I don't give a rat's ass about"defending" 90s alt rock like Alice in Chains or whatever shit I never listen to from being sullied by Lil Peep. I just heard a song, the vocals reminded me of Durst, that's it.

It would make more sense to me though, just in terms of LB's heyday was later than grunge. I don't know. Just thought it sounded like Durst.

idk i could be wrong like i said LB wasn't a group i payed close attention to

the key to me, to liking peep music, was realizing that he has written many very good songs

flappy bird, Thursday, 16 November 2017 06:57 (eight years ago)

Legitimately very sad about this. Just a boy really, turned 21 this month.

-_- (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 16 November 2017 06:59 (eight years ago)

a lot of this stuff really is more descended from durst-shepherded post-grunge (with some ‘10s idioms sprinkled in). anyway rip

flopson, Thursday, 16 November 2017 07:57 (eight years ago)

I took a real liking to this dude and would check YT from time to time hoping for something new. Loved the video where he talks about his tattoos, seemed genuinely decent and sensitive and self effacing. Thanks D-40 for the introduction.

really sad

xanax is a benzodiazapine

maura, Thursday, 16 November 2017 13:15 (eight years ago)

Deaths from overdose on benzos alone are rare. Probably a fentanyl OD from street drugs (although they may have purportedly have been "Xanax").

-_- (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 16 November 2017 13:40 (eight years ago)

Feel bad for saying it but I was having a hard time imagining him at 30, 40, etc. RIP.

been listening 2 him all day ~ really just gutted damn

honestly i think hellboy is one of the best records of the 2010s, and sadly, feel like this may make it more thought of in that way :|

johnny crunch, Friday, 17 November 2017 03:13 (eight years ago)

ya as good as hellboy and crybaby are it was obvious his best work was ahead of him. could have been a huge star

flopson, Friday, 17 November 2017 03:30 (eight years ago)

I became semi-obsessed with Peep after I saw this track uploaded to the No Jumper YouTube channel in early March 2016 and began compulsively checking all his older shit. It felt like he hadn't really polished the records yet but there were so many musical possibilities it made you really curious where he was going to go with it. I think early on, especially, I was drawn to how it built on the formal sound of drill but the textural qualities of rock (and even a lil dubstep in this record).

That same month I made a mini-comp of my favorites, an 11 track mix you can download here. I'd probably pick different songs today, but I think this holds up. I was afraid I might get bored relistening, but I feel like I was able to winnow the early stuff down to a--not comprehensive, but definitely listenable selection. His real debut didn't come until June or July of that year with Crybaby. But yeah, if you're looking to hear some of his earlier stuff check this out

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Friday, 17 November 2017 06:15 (eight years ago)

I'm gonna man up and admit that I was wrong. There's a lot I didn't get about Lil Peep. But he was good.

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Friday, 17 November 2017 14:10 (eight years ago)

I'm still not going to be sitting around listening to Lil Peep, but this one is pretty and the video is poignant (as people point out in the comments, it's shot like it was already a memorial):

lmao love u deej <3

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Friday, 17 November 2017 15:05 (eight years ago)

Idk what made me come around but there’s a certain nocturnal quality to much of his music that I can appreciate. It feels pure.

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Friday, 17 November 2017 22:19 (eight years ago)

thanks for that comp deej i will def be listening later

-_- (jim in vancouver), Friday, 17 November 2017 22:25 (eight years ago)

Also I agree with deej in that grunge is the main frame of reference for most of the guitar stuff he does, at least post crybaby. Part of why I didn't like him initially, I think, is that I kind of left grunge for rap back in the day and have not been thrilled by the prospect of grunge coming back in the context of rap. But it is what it is.

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Sunday, 19 November 2017 18:34 (eight years ago)

Been randomly checking out some of his stuff, fully expecting to hate it, based on most descriptions I've read, but I really don't - whatever the influences (I kinda hear Beck sometimes), he did his own thing with them and it worked. RIP.

funny ive never liked Sullivan really but I do like this

johnny crunch, Monday, 29 January 2018 16:26 (eight years ago)

Some people hate this “alt-rap.” Sometimes I hate it, and most things.

come on my dude

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Monday, 29 January 2018 16:27 (eight years ago)

poor kid
deej just started this thread in late 2016 (which generally he's pretty on the forefront of picking up on stuff like this) and he's already gone...

bhad and bhabie (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 29 January 2018 17:48 (eight years ago)

Jjs piece gives me a rush of mixed emotions... it’s validating but also ridiculous lol

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Monday, 29 January 2018 18:14 (eight years ago)

Like jjs would never in a million years write a piece like that about keef but keef is the actual nexus / launch point for a lot of this generational shit, he just picked up on the white kid

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Monday, 29 January 2018 18:15 (eight years ago)

I liked the linked videos of cover version, just for reminding me how much stuff there is out there, still.

Youtube then sent me to A****** F******'s review of the last Lip Peep LP, thanks for nothing Youtube.
