this might be insensitive, but if this is where her life's at where she felt this would be the most interesting direction she could've gone in, then, uh, yikes

Considering the font, this had better be Taylor's pass at Mercyful Fate.

early prediction is that she loves joni mitchell so much that she skipped right to making her own dog eat dog

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Wednesday, 23 August 2017 17:07 (eight years ago)

Does that mean on her next album she'll be doing a video duet with Billy Idol?

Someone let me know if she uses "Because my ass is on the back of my body" as a lyric

Unless she decides to make more songs like Shake it Off and Bad Blood, because those were two of the biggest hits from her last album.

MarkoP, Wednesday, 23 August 2017 20:31 (eight years ago)

It can be hard to remember that she and Kendrick had a #1 hit, it just sort of disappeared. I still hear "Blank Space" and "Style" on the radio, but not "Bad Blood."

I was hoping her taking a break was to clear people's minds of all the annoying kanye/kim bullshit that nobody but the press and fanboys+girls gave a shit about. that way she could come back with something
a little fresh and removed.... instead the vibe is... "guys i am back with some zingers. remember Bad Blood? shit gonna get real snarky but in a slightly sad and ineffectual way"

Interesting read focusing on her album launches since 2010 and what's changed:

https://cultural-learnings.com/2017/08/24/erasing-herself-from-the-narrative-taylor-swift-and-the-absence-of-intimacy-in-the-launch-of-reputation/

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 24 August 2017 13:37 (eight years ago)

I know she's done stuff like "Mean" in the past but I'm hoping Swifty's savvy enough not to make an entire album about the Perils of Celebrity. I don't need to hear her Yeezus.

xp I can't speak for everyone, but I'm just sick of songs that sound like this and are constructed this way and I kinda (maybe wrongly) assumed she'd rise above.

two months pass...

I’ve only really absorbed this record in the past few days in the wake of the release of LOVER, and I made my own tracklisting for it:

1. ...Ready For It?
2. I Did Something Bad
3. So it Goes...
4. Delicate
5. End Game (feat. Ed Sheeran and Future)
6. Dress
7. Dancing With Our Hands Tied
8. Don’t Blame Me
9. Call It What You Want
10. This Is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things

Begins and ends how it always should’ve: with Taylor remaining joyfully and deliriously bad. “Getaway Car” doesn’t do anything to supplement the flow of this sequence; that and “King Of My Heart” would be the B-sides. “New Year’s Day” works better as a hidden track on an alternate LOVER tracklist where the title track serves as the closer. “Gorgeous” and “LWYMMD” never should’ve seen the light of day.

winters (josh), Tuesday, 27 August 2019 18:47 (six years ago)

i was just thinking that time has been unexpectedly kind to this record. even "look what you made me do" won me over, it's kinda delightfully arch out of its immediate context. "this is why we can't have nice things" is the only song i find too embarrassing to bear, good hook though

american bradass (BradNelson), Tuesday, 27 August 2019 19:36 (six years ago)

i also think this is her best sequenced record

american bradass (BradNelson), Tuesday, 27 August 2019 19:38 (six years ago)

I agree with you on the sequencing. The album's already aging reeeeally well, and it may become my personal favorite in time.

winters (josh), Tuesday, 27 August 2019 20:31 (six years ago)

I really should go back to this. I think New Year's Day is the best song here by far and I've always liked Getaway Car and King of My Heart. Without having gone back to it for a while, I feel it has too many momentum killers for me: "Endgame", "I Did Something Bad", "So It Goes", "Dancing"; "Call It What You Want" seemed underwhelming and 100% on "This Is Why We Can't Have Nice Things".

But I should go back to it; I'll be doing it soon.

This is the TS album whose re-recording I’m most interested in tbh

self-clowning oven (Murgatroid), Thursday, 11 February 2021 14:26 (five years ago)

I don't think she's re-recording this one, it's the early stuff that she needs to regain the rights to

akm, Thursday, 11 February 2021 15:10 (five years ago)

it was her last under big machine, she's said she is

ufo, Thursday, 11 February 2021 15:27 (five years ago)

yeah, her social media post today said first six albums so this one is included

self-clowning oven (Murgatroid), Thursday, 11 February 2021 15:33 (five years ago)

wow. weird. I wonder if it will deviate much from the original; the intention is not to, right?

two years pass...

Everyone seems to think, via some culty numerology (+ other clues), that she’s announcing Taylor’s Version tonight… guess we’ll see (it’s three minutes to midnight, EST).

It's kind of like if the 2012 Mayan calendar thing was all about an Avengers Blu-Ray.

Beyond Goo and Evol (President Keyes), Monday, 27 November 2023 16:28 (two years ago)

She and her people have an almost virtuoso grasp of timing their marketing and promotion to keep her in the news. It's like someone told her that she had 100% market penetration and she took that as a challenge to break another record.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 27 November 2023 16:31 (two years ago)

two months pass...

Ok, take two… now everyone thinks it’ll be announced at the Grammys tonite (even tho she’s not performing), bc she changed her IG profile pic from color to b&w.

Do we deserve more?

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 4 February 2024 20:26 (two years ago)

I appreciate how the Taylor social media hegemony makes me feel like a fan of scrappy indie upstarts, i.e. artists such as Lana and Olivia… (btw – it appears Taylor, Lana, and the Ant-man will be seated together at the Grammys; very exciting stuff).

If there's one thing Swift has in common with Trump, it's knowing how to flood the zone.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 5 February 2024 02:58 (two years ago)

Funny how one and half years between albums feels really short now.

Tim F, Monday, 5 February 2024 03:00 (two years ago)

My Swiftie daughter is perplexed trying to imagine how or if she will promote it, because her tour runs until October.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 5 February 2024 03:05 (two years ago)

“Promote” it??

jake morgendorffer core (morrisp), Monday, 5 February 2024 03:09 (two years ago)

Your daughter is missing the literalism: it will simply be the screams of tortured poets from Taylor's lair.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 5 February 2024 03:09 (two years ago)

1.5 years is about average for her in recent years, though it is short for pretty much anyone else

she has april and most of march off from touring, so that's where the album promo will fit in. i expect the tour will be overhauled for the europe leg in may - at the very least the midnights section will be cut down and a section for the new album will be added in

ufo, Monday, 5 February 2024 03:13 (two years ago)

April is the cruelest month after all

Beyond Goo and Evol (President Keyes), Monday, 5 February 2024 03:13 (two years ago)
